What Time Is It There? 2001
my favorite tsai ming-liang i’ve seen so far. a three-pronged portrait of loneliness, grief, liminality, seeking; the rituals through which we try to conjure something — or someone — that’s missing (and how sometimes it works, though not in the way we expect.) i like the structure and editing, beautiful photography, and the tone that floats from funny to dreamy to mournful and back again.
