Brigit Murtaugh / Microsoft we'd love to collaborate with you to improve this!
Do you use Visual Studio Code? If so, please read on and help us improve their JSON Schema integration by sharing this post! 🙏 💡 A very popular use for JSON Schema is enabling better auto-completion when authoring JSON files on code editors. The popular SchemaStore (https://lnkd.in/d2VU4ABZ) project by Mads Kristensen was built around this core idea. 😵 However, you might not be aware that the popular Visual Studio Code editor by Microsoft ships with a non-compliant JSON Schema implementation. See the relatively high amount of test failures recorded by the Bowtie project by Julian Berman for Visual Studio Code: https://lnkd.in/dCzS3Abc. 😨 Most notably, Visual Studio Code's non-compliant implementation DOES NOT recognise the popular "$id" keyword (https://lnkd.in/dZPeD-KQ), as noted by Greg Dennis, which means MANY perfectly valid schemas are just unusable on Visual Studio Code. 😭 Several projects in the community hit this, like the AsyncAPI Initiative, which is forced to ship two variants of its schemas, with and without identifiers, created by a custom script that "fixes up" the references (see https://lnkd.in/dWCJq6CS), and I recently stumbled into this problem with Albert Lombarte while working on KrakenD great schemas. 🤔 As a workaround, we ended up extending the JSON Schema CLI (https://lnkd.in/dBXKVm_r) to opt-in to perform JSON Schema Bundling (i.e. inlining references) without requiring the use of identifiers. You can already use this on v1.1.0 (https://lnkd.in/dB9fVfVV). With JSON Schema being SO prevalent in the industry, I'd LOVE to see Visual Studio Code fixing this properly upstream instead. Brigit Murtaugh what would it take for JSON Schema and Visual Studio Code to collaborate on this?
