Antonia Bayle’s Father

He patted the envelope in his left breast pocket. It was still there, as it always was, but old habits die hard.
The letter within was penned what felt like ages ago. It was looking likely that he would take as long to send it as he did to write it. There was always something—the wrong time, the wrong place, the wrong mood, the wrong company.

Satisfied that the letter was still safe in its envelope, albeit more weathered and wrinkled than it was the day before, Vishra began the process of strapping on his armor. Greaves first. Left, then right. His hafling squire orbited around him like a dutiful moon. The best squires were shadows, always present, always near, but never in the way. Tipple was one of the best.

His plate hung heavier today than it usually did. Truthfully, it wasn’t just the plate. It was weight of the years, the weight of the coming battle, the weight of the damn letter. He’d faced the worst Norrath could throw at him and here he was, a nervous little boy too meek to tell a woman the truth. This was one of those things that time never made easier—except to make excuses.

He punched one of the wooden beams supporting the pavilion with his gauntleted hand. Tipple didn’t flinch. Instead, he carefully lifted Dawnbreaker, the sword that could cleave morning itself, and began strapping it to his charge’s back with the aid of a stepstool.

Vishra believed with every fiber of his being that she deserved to know, needed to know. To him, she was the heart of Norrath, holding up everything while it all threatened to fall down. And she did it with grace and poise and strength. More strength than he had ever shown.

“Tipple, today is the day. If I can’t summon the courage to finally do this one simple task, if I turn and run like I have so many times before, if I break like some half-trained conscript, then may the gods strike me down.”

“Very good, sir.”

Vishra strode out of his pavilion, light gleaming off his filigreed armor, with only the blue velvet of his sash refusing to participate in the spectacle. He looked every bit the hero people spoke of. Of course, they didn’t know that his stomach, tied in knots, was liable to let go of his breakfast at any moment.
He had one opportunity, a meeting with her scheduled in a few hours. It would be easy. Simply walk up to her and hand her the envelope. There were too many things at stake to let this continue to weigh on him.
Vishra made his rounds—speaking with his soldiers, poring over battle plans, talking contingencies, and acquiring the razor focus he needed to face the Awakened – Kerafyrm’s shock troops and syncophants.
It was late morning when he started toward the meeting area. He saw her, every bit as beautiful as the day she was born. She waved. He returned the gesture.

“Vishra! Good to see you. Are you ready for this?”

He made a deep bow, “I am, my liege. Knowing Lucan, I think he’ll be on board with our plan. It’s direct, to the point, and vicious.”

“Let’s hope so. Arguing with him is exhausting.” She grabbed his arm, “Shall we off?”
“Antonia, wait… I…”

“…Yes?”

“…You’ve grown into a superb leader, a woman that our whole nation can look up to. I want you to know I’m very proud of you…” He stumbled over those last few words.

Red crept into Antonia’s cheeks and she gave a little laugh, “Th-thank you, Vishra. I’m very proud of you as well. I could not have done any of this without you at my side. Anyway, enough of this. We will have time to pat ourselves on the back after Kerafyrm is put to rest. Let’s go see Lucan.”

And that was that.

Hours later, Vishra stormed into his tent, fumbled with his right gauntlet, clumsily worked at the straps and flung it into a corner with a snarl. Tipple ran over and began laboring on the left gauntlet, deftly removed it, and then started on the breastplate. But even Tipple’s impressive speed wasn’t quick enough for Vishra, who clawed at the plate in fury.

Tipple sharply barked, “Sir!” Then calmly, “Be still.”

Vishra froze, but Tipple could feel his body vibrating with tension under the armor. Tipple quickly unfastened it, pulled the chestpiece away, and retreated into his corner.

As soon as the plate was off, Vishra was in motion again. He grabbed the envelope from his breast pocket, tore it open, looked at the letter, and then crushed it in his fist. He took three, slow, very deep breaths. To Tipple, it looked like he was trying to calm himself, but Vishra suddenly roared—a primal, furious, and somehow plaintive bellowing of emotion. It conquered its entire vicinity like a pack of wolves howling at the moon.

There was a commotion at the flap of the tent as two guards rushed in, spears at the ready. Tipple hurried over and silently waved them off—they didn’t want to be in here, they didn’t hear anything, and they definitely didn’t want to see Vishra when he was like this. The guards gave each other confused looks before warily backing out of the pavilion.

He finally ran out of breath. Tipple sighed in relief and moved to his comfortable corner, his eyes on his charge, hoping that the worst was over.

Vishra stood, his back to the entrance, head down, for a very long time. Minutes passed and the only life Tipple could see from him were the breaths he took every so often.

Finally, in a gravelly whisper, “I’m sorry. That was uncalled for. Thank you, Tipple.”

“Very good, sir.”

Vishra slowly sat down at his desk. His fist relaxed bit by bit as he placed the letter on the cool wood. He spent a long time smoothing out the wrinkles, his hands running over the paper until it mostly lay flat. Then he read:

My dearest Antonia,

I have written and re-written this letter so many times. It is something I should have given you long ago. It is with love and pride and a small bit of regret that it only reaches you now.

We’ve travelled the world, Antonia. We’ve seen everything there is to see and more. I’ve watched you grow from a small, awkward (but adorable!) waifling, into a powerful, beautiful ruler of her own kingdom. One of my fondest memories is of us fishing off the portside of Dawnfall when the wind was still and refused to blow. It was so hot, the waters so calm, but you never complained. You just smiled…and when you caught that first sea bass…I’d never experienced anything like it before. Even after so many years apart, that bond was still there, unbroken. Whenever things turn black, I travel back to that day and that smile.

I do not know why it is so hard for me to say the words I want to. Years of pretending to be something I am not—it makes the lie harder to admit. Some combination of fears—fear of hurting you, fear of distracting you. Fear of losing you. I am not afraid of many things, but this, our relationship, it is something I cannot live without. You give me the strength to face down demons, to look Kerafyrm in the eye. If I lose you, then I myself will be lost. I am a pitiful man, Shirrana, and it is because of this weakness that the lie has continued this long. It stops now, though, and I can only beg your forgiveness.

If I seem overbearing at times… if I seem overprotective… if I treat you too much like my daughter… it is because, well…

It is because you are.

I am lucky. The Sisters of Tearfall exile the fathers when their daughters are born. Most of them never get to see their children grow, but I was given the opportunity to raise you from a distance, council you and protect you as if you were mine. Your mother and I loved each other very much, and it was her love and foresight that set these things in motion. I wish she could see you now, but she would not be surprised. She would be proud, just as I am.

You are probably experiencing some combination of confusion and anger. Or perhaps just the calm assuredness Norrath knows you for. I understand that it will take you some time to process this and come to peace with it. When you are ready, we can sit down with some wine and talk. I can tell you the real story of how you came into this world and discuss whether you have room for an old soldier to be your father.

In the meantime know that I love you, Shirrana, and that you have been loved since the day you were born.

I’ll be waiting,

Vishra

He absently pawed at one of the drawers on his desk, his hand finally finding a new envelope. He carefully folded the letter, placed it in its new home, and lodged it in his left breast pocket.

“Tomorrow.”

***The End***

The Interrogation of Opal Darkbriar

Opal Darkbriar: “Release me immediately! Cristanos Thex will not stand for this!”

Opal Darkbriar: “Do you know who I am? I have powerful allies!”

Opal Darkbriar: “These infernal wards nullify my translocation spells…”

Opal Darkbriar: “If you do not release me there will be hell to pay! Do you hear me?!”

Captain Maganus strides into the cell block, the two resting spellsplitter’s snapping to attention. The third shows no sign he is aware his commander has entered the room.

a Militia spellsplitter: “Captain.”

Opal Darkbriar: “Maganus. How much longer do you plan on holding me here?! This is a grave insult to lock me in this cage!”

Captain Maganus: “Calm yourself, Darkbriar. No one is buying into your theatrics.”

Opal Darkbriar: “You threaten the entire city of Freeport by detaining me. Neriak will not stand for this!”

Captain Maganus: “Is that so…?”

Opal Darkbriar: “Queen Cristanos Thex, herself, will see to my release.”

Captain Maganus: “I believe you are sadly mistaken, Opal. You see, it was the queen who allowed us to enter Neriak and apprehend you, traitor.”

Opal Darkbriar: “You are lying!”

Captain Maganus: “Am I? There were certain conditions that were agreed upon when the Darklight Pact was signed, your arrest was one of them. The Overlord doesn’t take kindly to having his property stolen.”

Opal Darkbriar: “I didn’t steal anything! Secondly, Neriak would go to war before allowing itself to sign a treaty with the likes of that madman.”

Captain Maganus: “Fortunately, Queen Thex has a wiser head than you. You sadly overestimate the strength of Neriak. The queen was in no position to do much bartering.”

Opal Darkbriar: “You are delusional, human. Neriak has been, and will always be one of the greatest empires on Norrath!”

Captain Maganus: “I am afraid it is you that is out of touch of reality, my dear Darkbriar. Thex couldn’t sign the treaty fast enough… what with the multiple legions camped on her doorstep once the Commonlands tunnel was completed.”

Opal Darkbriar: “Make no mistake, it is just a temporary convenience.”

Captain Maganus: “Lord Razon Blayze has been assigned permanently to Hate’s Envy to oversee the relations between Neriak and Freeport. He’ll make sure Neriak upholds their part of the longstanding treaty.”

Opal Darkbriar: “My nation will not be held to such conditions for long. I will see to that personally as a loyal and powerful ally of the Teir’Dal Empire!”

Captain Maganus: “Ah, well there is that as well. Your allegiance is something of suspect these days.”

Opal Darkbriar: “How dare you! I am Teir’Dal!”

Captain Maganus: “The queen wasn’t aware of such theft, and it was your hasty escape that led us right to Neriak’s hidden doorstep. We have you to thank for Freeport’s present political gain.”

Captain Maganus: “What we want to know is who you were working for when you stole Soulfire.”

Opal Darkbriar: “I wasn’t working for any-!”

Captain Maganus: “No, don’t protest… I wouldn’t expect you to divulge any information… and it would save our ears from your screeching. Rest assured my spellsplitter division will discover the answers we seek.”

Opal Darkbriar: “A division you wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for me and my academy’s training. You owe me, Maganus.”

Captain Maganus: “If we relied on your faulty training we’d still be searching for the clues of your theft… something I have no doubt you intended.”

Opal Darkbriar: “Listen… we can work something out! I… I can make it worth your while. What is it you want? Power?! Money?! Love…”

Captain Maganus: “You are getting desperate, Darkbriar… and you insult me. We will get to the bottom of this, and then the time of your trial will be at hand. Good day, Opal.”

The Captain turns sharply and strides towards the exit. Just before reaching the stairs Darkbriar calls out to hi one last time…

Opal Darkbriar: “Maganus! Maganus! You can’t leave me here! He’ll have me executed! He’ll do it himself!”

Maganus pauses, half turning back to her. His eyes close briefly as he says quietly,

Captain Maganus: “I believe that’s the plan.”

History of Frogloks

We are the children of Mithaniel Marr, god of valor. He has given unto us a greater share of honor than was given to any other creature. We would rather die with honor than extend our lives through deception of any kind.

This can be challenging for others–the concept that laws are not meant for the breaking. While we try to be understanding that not everyone shares our belief, it is still distressing to see rules bent and broken. The laws of the land are not simply suggestions, as some seem to think.

Such is the way of the troll. After many attempts to peacefully coexist with them in the Innothule Swamp, their utter disregard for protocol finally provoked us to battle. The blessing of Mithaniel Marr was with us as we drove them from their filthy city of Grobb. In His honor, we renamed it Gukta, Outpost of Marr.

Some may wonder why we contented ourselves with a simple home like Gukta, when our obvious intelligence indicates we might prefer plush surroundings. That is not our way, you see. It seems those whose skin is laced with hair need warmth and softness in their surroundings. We are comforted in other ways.

Others have said that we frogloks are too proud and that we deserve the challenges that have been our lot through the Ages. We do not deny the pride we feel in our heritage. We were created by Mithaniel Marr, after all. Through his grace, we have overcome many adversities that would have brought others to the brink of despair.

When the ogres of Rallos Zek began their reign of terror, they tried to start with Gukta. They thought they knew all the deepest reaches of our territory, thinking that we had not changed or developed it after wresting the city from the trolls. The ogres fought without honor, to their own detriment.

We are not taken unawares with ease. The foul ogres thought to destroy us, but we were guided by the Hand of Marr. Our eggs were carried deep into the tunnels, followed by elite forces to guard them. Deep beneath the marshes we went. We sent emissaries to Freeport to advise the Overlord of the rise of the Rallosians.

The Overlord brushed our concerns aside and so, with barely three days’ rest, our emissaries headed to Qeynos to warn the Bayles. Though sympathetic, they chose only to increase their watches rather than advancing to attack before the Rallosians expanded their reach. How we wished they had listened! The Rallosian Army grew in strength and power until the cities of Freeport and Qeynos were besieged.

The blessings of Mithaniel Marr still protected the faithful. The honorless ogres broke faith with their own allies, defiling the Temple of Cazic-Thule. And so, in the darkest hours when it appeared that the Rallosians would conquer all, the Green Mist covered the battlefields, slaying our enemies. However, not all our enemies were destroyed.

Though many of our adversaries perished in the time of the Green Mist, some escaped by continuing to pursue us. Deeper into the marshes we fled, and still they followed. It was then that we felt the rage of the gods.

By failing to stand our ground and hold back the tide of the enemy, we disappointed the gods who had held us high in their trust and esteem. Punishment was both swift and severe.

Though we had escaped the Rallosians, we could not escape the torments to follow. The Rending kept those of us who had scattered apart. Separated from any other honorable race, we drifted into oblivion.

And yet, oblivion would have been more kind than that which we endured. For those of us who found our way to the Feerrott were taken prisoner by the Tae’Ew, who fed us to their god.

Generation upon generation of froglok has been subjugated by the Alliz Tae’Ew. They demanded service and, weakened by the calamities that had befallen us, we were in no position to rebel. Until now.

In secret, several of our strongest broke free and are repeating the journey made so long ago when we first sent word to Freeport and Qeynos that the Rallosians were on the move. Surely we have atoned for our offenses against the gods and will be saved.

Sovereignities of Qeynos

Sovereignities of Qeynos

Penned by Randyle Brinn,

Historian and Scholar

On this, the first anniversary of Antonia Bayle’s crowning

Antonius Bayle (the first) – The Great Unifier

Time of Rule: The Age of Enlightenment

Antonius Bayle, son of Vallius Bayle, brought order to the Plains of Karana, unifying the nomadic clans of the plains with the village of Oceangreen, and thus established the city of Qeynos. Havign renounced the title of king, he required all to simply call him by his name, Antonius.

Antonius Bayle II – The Great Defender

Time of Rule: The Age of Reclamation & Age of Turmoil

Antonius Bayle II had studied under the fearless Knights of Thunder, as well as the Rangers of Surefall Glade. His mind for battle was instrumental in keeping the city unified despite the upheavals and unrest that plagued his reign, including the Erudite exodus from the city, and their subsequent uprising within Erudin. Under the rule of this militaristic leader, the Qeynos Guard grew and expanded divisions beyond the city walls.

Antonius Bayle III – The Great Diplomat

Time of Rule: The Age of Turmoil

Antonius Bayle III, noted for his foreign diplomacy, is lauded for forging alliances between Qeynos and Erudin, northmen clans, and the halflings of Rivervale, during an overwise notably tumultuous time, which witnessed the erection of Paineel, and the dawn of Sir Lucan D’lere rule of Freeport. His intentions for establishing diplomatic ties with such hated enemies of the state were cut short by assassination, but not before he had fathered three notable sons; Kyle, Antonius IV, and Kane (the traitor)

His first son, Kyle, born before Antonius Bayle III had inherited the Qeynos Throne, disappeared mysteriously. From this point, the Bayle line would never again be direct, as Antonius IV, his second son and namesake, would henceforth be the most direct descendant of Antonius Bayle the first.

Antonius Bayle IV – The Great Avenger

Time of Rule: The Age of Turmoil

By far, one of the most loved and celebrated rulers since Antonius Bayle the first, Antonius IV fought numerous battles against not only the foes of the kingdom, but the enemies of his allies. He has been noted as the single ruler that stretched the benevolent belief of Qeynos further beyond the borders than ever before. He proved his great skills of leadership and battle during the War of Plagues and established a council of representatives and advisory, known as the Circle of Ten.

Growing concerned, due to Antonius IV’s bachelorhood, the Circle of Ten implored him to wed, and sire children in order to further the Bayle lineage, and secure the Qeynos throne. Agreeing (perhaps relucantly), he accepted and arranged marriage, and soon sired twins, Anton and Antea, before his untimely death at sea.

Only upon Antonia Bayle’s emergence have historians come to learn of Antonius IV’s greatest secrets – his love for Lady Shae of Felwithe, and his true first born, Shaonia, (Antonia’s great-great-great-grandmother), and of his true death. Antonius IV had faked his death at sea in order to be reunited with his true love, and live out his remaining life with her and their daughter.

Anton and Antea Bayle – The Twin Monarchs

Time of Rule: The Age of War

Rather malicious folk, Antonius IV’s twin heirs squandered the riches of the throne, and demanded fealty from all citizens, ushering a dark period for the city of Qeynos. Strongly bonded, the twins often seemed more like king and queen rather than sibling rulers. After Antea was slain, by a raiding band of Rallosians, Anton was plunged into a pit of depression. His eccentric behavior became increasingly erratic and violent, ending with his suicide.

Antonius Bayle V – The Great Sage

Time of Rule: The Age of War & The Age of Cataclysms

The child of Anton Bayle and one of Antea Bayle’s hand maidens, Antonius V was the most scholarly and wise ruler of Qeynos. He also was the youngest, having been crowned at the age of fifteen, after the death of his father. Due to his youth, he sought the unparalleled guidance of the Circle of Five in many decisions of stage. Thankfully, he had been tutored in history, art and arcane sciences during most of his youth, for without his wisdom Qeynos would ahve certainly met its destruction during the Rending.

Antonius Bayle VI – The Great Healer

Time of Rule: The Age of Cataclysms

A disciple of the Temple of Life since his youth, Antonius VI rose to become one of the greatest priests to walk the streets of Qeynos, a power that he used benevolently when the Shattering occurred. The Great Healer aided in the healing of thousand of Qeynosians, and their allies. He found strength in the Circle of Five, and treasured their advise and guidance.

Antonius Bayle VII – The Great Dreamer

Time of Rule: The Age of Cataclysms

During Antonius VII’s rule, the art of survival became a priority. During this time of great tragedy, he would often comfort the masses by relaying his prophetic dreams of safety, prosperity and cooperation for Qeynos. During the Great Dreamer’s reign the first steps to abandoning the animosity between the kingdom and many of its foes began.

Unfortunately, he was unable to see his dreams of harmony to their end. He, and his fellow Bayle family members, drowned when their royal vessel was swallowed by the Coldwind Sea, after being churned and torn asunder due to a great meteor shower.

The Circle of Five

Time of Rule: The Age of Cataclysms

The council of city representatives and advisers had increasingly assisted in the decisions of the crown, since their official inception as the Council of Ten during Antonius IV’s reign. They reluctantly took up rule of the kingdom themselves while a search for a royal successor was carried out. When the violent cataclysms began to calm during the reign, The Circle of Five oversaw the rebuilding of the kingdom.

Many of the current Qeynosian organizations were established under their rule, and many of the alliances started by Antonius VII were formed. The Pact of Tserrin was signed with Freeport and the Far Seas Trading Company began to run goods, services and survivors to and from the ravaged land for both cities. Their necessary reign would last only until their search for a successor of the Bayle bloodline proved fruitful!

Antonia Bayle

Time of Rule: The Age of Destiny

Born Shirrana of the Sisterhood, she is the first female to sit upon the kingdom’s throne by herself, and the first to have been bestowed the title of Antonia. She is Antonius IV’s great-great-great-granddaughter, as her mother was Taylania, the daughter of Marinya, who was the daughter of Baylisia, the daughter of Shaonia, daughter of Lady Shae of Felwithe and Antonius Bayle IV.

She took the throne with much fanfare, and brought with it hope and prosperity to the citizens of our rebuilt kingdom of Qeynos. Her current reign will undoubtedly meet many a challenge. Let us pray to the gods that she leads with dedication, conviction, grace and wisdom, as her ancestors before her.

Long live Her Highness!

Places of Norrath: Qeynos

Overview of Qeynos

The free city of Qeynos controls most of the plains to the west of the Serpent’s Spine Mountains. The city is ruled by the firm yet just hand of Antonius Bayle IV. Qeynos represents the pinnacle of human achievement and is a haven from the fierce wilderness of Norrath. Bayle is a well-liked and respected leader, but the seeds of corruption are being sown by the Circle of the Unseen Hand and their allies in the city guard.

Qeynos is set atop small cliffs that run along the coastline to the west. Due to their composition of eroding sandstone and rock, climbing them is virtually impossible. The cliffs act as a natural barrier, making Qeynos impenetrable to attacks from the west or from the ocean. At a low point in the cliffs, the people of Qeynos have built a treat pier, protected in a harbor naturally formed form the stone and a bend of in the coastline.

The ocean is a deep, dark blue. The waters are usually fairly calm, although waves crash roughly against the cliff base. Many ships safely come and go daily from Qeynos’ harbor. These include naval, fishing, trading, and transport vessels from Erudin. Adventurers and tradesmen will often been see at the docks, awaiting one of the two vessels that travel between the two coastal cities through the oceanic pass known as Erud’s Crossing.

Northern Qeynos
Northern Qeynos is, in fact, the original City of Qeynos. During an invasion of the city a surprise night attack that started a war many years ago, the southern and eastern walls took heavy damage. Some of the buildings in these areas were destroyed but the militia and able-bodied citizen fought the invasion and saved much of the city including the palace. Later, instead of fixing the old castle wall, it was decided to expand the city of Qeynos by building a new one further out.

Most of the buildings in Northern Qeynos are very old looking, but a few have been remodeled or rebuilt. Made mostly of gray stone blocks and brown bricks, the houses and shops in this area are now showing their age. The paint is worn away and dark vertical trails have formed from rain water erosion. These buildings are sturdy and have been around for ages, but were obviously built for function over style during Qeynos’ early years when the kingdom was small and poor. From the towers and some of the outer walls of the city hang cloth flags and banners, displaying the colors and insignia of the kingdom of Qeynos.

A local tribe of gnolls, the Darkpaw has become a stubborn and enduring threat to Northern Qeynos, striking terror in the civilian population due to their constant raiding. While the city guardsmen have valiantly fended off the assaults, the have failed to stop them outright. At their wits end, the frustrated citizens have taken to offering adventurers a bounty in return for the delivery of gnoll teeth an fangs

Southern Qeynos
Southern Qeynos holds in it the main docks for passage between Antonica and Odus. This is a bustling area full of people transporting their wares between the two continents. Also on the ships logs are adventurers seeking new wealth and new fame that can be found in the different lands.

The Southern District of Qeynos also houses the bank that is heavily guarded by barbarian warriors. Near the bank lies the Ground of Fate. This is an area where combatants can prove their skill in combat with one another. The ringing sounds of sword melee can often be heard throughout the entire city.

Many guildhalls lie in South Qeynos where they can train young students interested in their art. Though Qeynos is a grand city, beggars and rats can often be found in dark corners.

Qeynos Catacombs, the Qeynos Aqueduct System
Located in the sewers below the human city of Qeynos, the Qeynos Catacombs is a large system of aqueducts. At first glance the sewers seem to be a normal rat infested dungeon with a variety of colorful graffiti written on the walls. But there is a dark secret hidden in the catacombs. Minions of the dark god Bertoxxulous, the Plague Bringer, have set up a secret shrine and base of operations within the catacombs. Entrance into the catacombs can found in the northern and southern sections of Qeynos; some hidden and some not so hidden.

Minions of Bertoxxulous roam the hidden passages; all not allied with his minions should avoid the secret tunnels. The rest of the catacombs are fairly safe for most adventurers.

The Lineage of Antonius Bayle
After the fall of the Combine Empire, the majority of humankind spread out and occupied the center of what was then called Tunaria. These humans lived in small villages upon the fertile plains of Karana. Over time the villages prospered and grew into small towns. Two of these towns were so successful as to grow into full-fledged cities. On the eastern coast, Freeport grew as a dangerous and bustling port of call frequented by those braving the journey across the Ocean of Tears. To the west, the city of Qeynos grew under the noble rule of law under a man named Antonius Bayle.

Humanity continued to prosper and grew strong. Much to the disdain of the elder races, the humans chose to rename the continent after one of their own, rather than a god. From that point forth, the continent was known as Antonica, in honor of all Antonius had done for the people of the races who lived there.

Antonius I was successful in incorporating the lawful city of Qeynos. He was given the role of ruler around the age of 25. For his success in bringing together the humans of the Plains of Karana and for founding the city of Qeynos, he was named “The Great Unifier.”

Antonius Bayle II became ruler of Qeynos when he was around 36 years of age. He led the movement to rename the continent of Tunaria to Antonica, ostensibly after his father. Of course, there were those who noted that he also shared the name of his father. During the period of his reign, the heretic Erudite necromancers revolted and left Erudin. Shortly thereafter, the disaster which formed The Hole occurred. Thus began what is known as the “Age of Turmoil.” Antonius II became known as “The Great Defender.”

Antonius Bayle III grew up during the beginning of this Age of Turmoil. During his childhood, he witnessed the construction of the heretic city of Paineel and saw Sir Lucan take control of the city of Freeport. When he came to power at the age of 26, he did his best to remain neutral and, as such, was named “The Great Diplomat.” Antonius Bayle III, for reasons unknown, chose to break tradition and name his first son Kyle rather than Antonius. In an attempt to establish a new seat of power in Antonica and extend his lands southward, Antonius III charged his eldest son Kyle with the expansion. Kyle left with a cadre of men to find a suitable location and to begin building.

A great deal of time passed without hearing any word or report of progress on this project. Antonius Bayle III sent a series of scouts to investigate but none ever returned. Kyle, his men and those sent to investigate were never heard from again. Roughly 25 years after the mysterious disappearance of Kyle, Antonius Bayle III had another son. This one he chose to name Antonius and he became Antonius Bayle IV. At the age of 24, Antonius Bayle IV was installed as the ruler of Qeynos, which he remains to this day.

It is believe that it will one day become tradition for the ruling leader of the Bayle line changes his/her name to a variation of Antonius upon taking the throne in honor of the first Antonius Bayle.

Antonius Bayle IV
Antonius Bayle IV is a highly devout Paladin of Karana. Though still relatively young, he is about as righteous, lawful and goodly as they come. He rules the city of Qeynos and its territories with a firm, but just hand.

He is simply referred to as “ruler”. Though some citizens may call mistakenly call him Your Honor, Grace and even Your Majesty, he does not expect to be referred to as such. He prefers to be called “Lord” if any title must be used. In his humility, he finds himself mildly embarrassed when referred to by any of the more lavish titles bandied about by those citizens who view him in awe – even as king – but know no better.

He considers himself a citizen in service to the city and views his role as the benevolent protector of Qeynos and the surrounding area. The government of Qeynos consists of the Circle of Ten, which is comprised of the heads of each of the guilds, including the Merchants of Qeynos, the Captain of the Guard (Kane Bayle) and a few of the more influential lords of the city.

Antonius Bayle holds veto power over the council and only Antonius may declare war or enter into treaties on behalf of Qeynos. The council may remove Antonius by unanimous vote, in which case a new ruler would be selected by popular election.

The Bayle line is by no means a hereditary monarchy. It is possible that some day a non-Bayle could rule Qeynos. In the simplest terms, the Bayles are very wealthy landowners who have a long history intimately attached to the city of Qeynos. Antonius IV is an incredibly popular, well-loved and respected ruler. This is due in part to his selfless personality, humility and devotion to his duties to the city and its people. It is also due to the trust the people have put in the Bayle lineage for producing skilled, trustworthy and reliable leaders.

The city of Qeynos oversees and protects most of the land west of the Serpent’s Spine, which includes the Plains of Karana. Qeynos represents the pinnacle of human achievement in the eyes of many. Though Antonius thinks of the Plains of Karana as his own, these feelings are best described as protective rather than possessive. He would also never state these feelings out loud for fear of angering one of his constituents.

The Bayle family tends to have children later in life. In fact, Antonius IV was born a full 35 years after the disappearance of Antonius III’s first son, Kyle Bayle. Kane Bayle was born two years after Antonius IV.

Antonius IV never knew Kyle. All he knows of his older brother is what was learned through stories told by his elders. Though he does occasionally wonder about what happened to him, he is too focused and dedicated to his duties as ruler to consider spending the time and resources that would be needed to search for the answers. This is a purely personal concern and he would not feel right about using city resources for such a selfish, wistful and sentimental reason. And thus, he seldom, if ever, discusses the matter.

Antonius is also an unparalleled swordsman. His closest rival in armed combat is his younger brother Kane Bayle, who himself has only been bested in combat by Antonius and Ebon Strongbear.

As a youth, Antonius IV spent much time escaping into the Jaggedpine Forest where he befriended another youth called Frenway Marthank. He still maintains a strong bond with his childhood friend. It was during their days as youths that Antonius came to appreciate the wonders of the forest and eventually do more than any other ruler to protect the forest ecosystem.

Ebon Strongbear, with whom he has a strong relationship, trained Antonius IV as a youngster in the Hall of Steel. Bayle then went on to the Temple of Thunder as most local aspiring paladins would in Qeynos.

While in the Hall of Steel, Antonius and Kane made great friends with Milea Clothspinner of the prestigious Clothspinners of Qeynos, one of the wealthiest families in the realm of Qeynos. Milea is currently an adventurer, a fact of which her family disapproves.

Later, Antonius IV went on an epic quest with the Qeynos Claymore at his side. This was before he became ruler and after he was a full fledged paladin. His father knew of the quest and its importance and allowed Antonius to wield the Qeynos Claymore for the purpose.

The Qeynos Claymore is what the city is named after and dates back to a time when the humans were living in small communities. Qeynos is an old sort of slang Combine word roughly translating to “manifest destiny for humanity”. The sword is magical and sentient.

The warrior Milea Clothspinner, who often uses a different last name when adventuring, accompanied Antonius IV on this quest. The ranger Frenway Marthank and the bard Vhalen Nostrolo also began the quest with Antonius, but Vhalen left before its completion. Along the way, the high elf Lady Shae of Felwithe joined them. There was also a halfling that assisted Antonius in this quest as well and there are rumors that say that this halfling was none other than Mayor Gubbin of Rivervale. The purpose of the quest was mostly unknown save that it was very important. Though he may speak wistfully of his old friends and adventure, the quest itself and its outcome are something personal and private to Antonius. Thus he does not discuss it other then to say that it was something he had to do in the past.

Antonius IV became romantically involved with Lady Shae after the completion of his quest. However, the Circle of Ten and the Felwithe ruling houses eventually caused the relationship to be broken off. As of right now, Antonius is not married or romantically involved in a public manner with anyone, and as yet has no heir. Milea, ever the adventurer, has been seen in the Plains of Karana lately. She is closer to Kane than Antonius and has put her total trust in the younger Bayle, asking him to watch over her little sister for her. She does not know of Kane’s corrupt soul.

Vhalen is still about in the Karanas and is currently despondent over the disappearance of his love, Metalla. And of course, Mayor Gubbin is the richest halfling around and the current mayor of Rivervale. For reasons known only to him, the mayor does not want the “exploits” of his youth known publicly. Antonius respects his friend’s wish, though he may drop a vague hint now and then. Frenway still lives in Surefall Glade. The recent death of his son in Mammoth Cave has left him in a state of severe grief.

Another of Antonius’ close and trusted friends is Vegalys Keldrane. Vegalys is a paladin of Rodcet Nife and is a few years younger than Antonius. Vegalys acts as advisor and confidant to Antonius Bayle and is also a public servant acting as Lord Magistrate for the city of Qeynos. Vegalys generally concerns himself with investigations into such things as organized crime though he is not directly involved with law enforcement, which is a duty that falls to the Qeynos City Guard.

Kane Bayle
Kane Bayle is Antonius’ younger brother, by two years. Kane acts as Captain of the Guard in times of peace; however, in times of war, Antonius himself assumes direct control of the Guard and the armies of Qeynos. Kane secretly wants to overthrow his older brother and take control of Qeynos, a fact of which Antonius is blissfully unaware. If Antonius ever heard talk of such a thing, he would be certain to set the record straight that he and his brother have a close relationship and such things are the ranting of drunkards and madmen.

Kane has been lulled into an alliance with the Bloodsabers and has begun to turn toward the ways of Bertoxxulous, the Plaguebringer.

Guildmasters
The guildmasters in Qeynos are based on deity worship. There is a guildmaster for each class that is available to humans and half elves with the exception of Druids and Rangers guilds which are in Surefall Glade instead. You’ll also find a Priest of Discord, Tradeskill Quest Masters, tradeskill crafting objects, and supply merchants for alchemy, baking, jewelcrafting, pottery, tailoring, and blacksmithing.

Just outside the city gates, adventurers can make use of a Plane of Knowledge portal.

Places of Interest
Northern Qeynos
The Temple of Life
The Temple of Life is where the resident priests and paladins of Rodcet Nife train and worship. The grounds of the temple include buildings, lush grass, shrubs, tress, and a large pool called the Pool of Jahnda. The temple itself is a circular gem-encrusted marble structure that hovers above the pool. A fountain of sparkling holy water flows from within the temple down to pool below. Throughout the temple and its grounds, the structures are made of white granite with marble floors and thick, light colored, velvet curtains.

Priestess Jahnda is the High Priestess of the Temple of Life. She is wise beyond her years, although no one seems to know how old she really is. The pool, over which the Temple of Life hangs, is named in her honor. The Pool of Jahnda is not meant for public use. It is a sacred pool created for the Koalindl. The Koalindl are fish that were a gift to Priestess Jahnda from the Prime Healer. They are said to be magical in nature. It is rumored that, every so often, the Prime Healer visits our plane in the guise of a Koalindl and swims in the pool.

This brew is one of the finest drinks that can be found. It use to be sold only at Crow’s bar, but apparently Crow is allowing it into other bars for a very hefty price.

One of the pub’s bartenders, Hanns Krieghor, frequently holds secret meetings a back room where a secret passageway leads to the rogue guild, the Circle of Unseen Hands. Hanns always has henchmen guarding all entrances to the guild, so unwanted people can’t get in. Hanns looks like a rough and tumble cutthroat when tending bar, but when he dons his black cloak of the Circle of Unseen Hands, he blends into the shadows and darkness and is rarely seen. He can pick almost any lock and is a master pick pocket. However, the Circle frowns upon stealing from Qeynos locals because they don’t want to run the risk of having the guild being discovered.

Southern Qeynos
Hall of Steel
The Hall of Steel is the guild hall for the Steel Warriors of Qeynos. It is the training ground for some of the greatest warriors of Antonica. The Steel Warriors’ Guildmaster Ebon Strongbear, Earron Huntlan, and a few others, led the city’s militia to victory against the Sabertooths of Blackburrow, a small gnoll tribe that lives in the nearby forest, and they are now known as local heroes.

His financial resources are meager, but he is quite content with his lot.

Hall of Sorcery
Within the Hall of Sorcery, Qeynos citizens study the three circles of magic and lend their services to citizens of Qeynos. Master Enchantress Mespha Tevalian oversees the Hall of Sorcery and the Order of Three.

The hall has a few rooms including a large, round room made of tall dark gray slabs of granite. Long colorful banners line the outside walls of the building and represent the three classes of magic studied within – red represents wizard, gold represents enchanter, and blue represents magician. Inside, the back part of the building is partitioned off by a thick black, velvet curtain, behind which is a private study. Along the walls off the main room, there are a few small tables for studying, and in center of the room there is a large stone altar, with a round firepit in the middle of it and various writings around the edges.

Lion’s Mane Tavern and Inn
The Lion’s Mane Tavern and the Lion’s Mane Inn are located in the Common’s Square section of Qeynos and are run by Earron and Tasya Huntlan. Both buildings are made of sturdy lumber and are kept fairly clean. The Tavern is connected to the Inn, but is only about half the size.

Lion’s Mane Tavern
Earron Huntlan runs the Tavern with an old war buddy, and both are like local heroes who like to trade old war stories with the customers. The outside of the tavern is made from wood and the inside walls are lined with bricks. The entryway has a colorful painting of lions playing poker. Behind the bar counter, rows of shelves are filled with various types of drinks.

The Tavern is usually quiet during the day, but can sometimes get pretty rowdy at night after the locals have had a few too many, but Earron is usually able to force the troublemakers out of his bar with no problems.

Earron seems to think there is something going on in Qeynos. He thinks there is something more than just a few shady characters moving into town. I think it’s just normal progress and growth. Have you ever been to Freeport? Qeynos isn’t nearly as bad as that place yet! The town’s just getting older, that’s all.

Lion’s Mane Inn
Tasya Huntlan runs the Lion’s Mane Inn. It is a large, two story, wooden building, that is attached to the Lion’s Mane Tavern. At the entrance, there is wooden receptionist desk, where Tasya Huntlan greets people with a friendly smile. The Huntlan family lives in the inn. Tasya and her daughter Sissy sell various ales, wine, and other drinks to quench the thirst of weary travelers staying at the inn.

She is a former student of Kinloc Flamepaw, and still has close ties with the Hall of Sorcery. This is why she’s allowed to operate her fairly successful business here. Caleah makes a good living, but it doesn’t flaunt it.

The shop has a scent of burning incense and has various books and potions on the shelves. A large, deep blue and purple rug covers most of the badly worn wooden floor.

Mermaid’s Lure
The Mermaid’s Lure is located on the south-side of the docks. The wooden walls are badly worn and the iron bolts and hinges are rusted from the harsh, salty seawater and air. It is adjacent to a dock that extends out into the ocean, where various seagoing craft are tied up.

Captain Rohand runs the Mermaid’s Lure and trades goods with the sea merchants from Odus. He is a rough looking man with tangled dirty beard and hair, and his skin is dark brown and tougher than leather. The Ol’ Captain is more than ready to tell his tales of adventures and legends to anyone willing to listen.

Fishing nets and gear hang on the walls of the shop in addition to the shells of sea creatures. The shop sells all sorts of nautical supplies.

Port Authority
The Port Authority can be found near the southern docks. Ships leave for other cities on a regular basis.

Fish’s Ale
Fish’s Ale is a pub owned by Fish Ranamer. It is located just off the Qeynos Harbor docks. This pub is a rough and tumble mix of drunken warriors and sailors. A night without a fight here is the exception, not the rule. The City Guards pass by as if the pub doesn’t exist, and pay no attention to the drunks or brawls heard from within. Fish himself is an ex-sailor, and runs the pub with some old sea dog partners. Fish serves up brews, in the quiet, private bar in the back of the building, to shady smugglers and people who want to keep a low profile. An open brew barrel can be found inside. There are also a few places for drunken travelers to rest after a long night of drinking fighting.

Voleen’s Fine Baked Goods
Owned by Voleen Tassen, Volee’s Bakery can be found in the southern part of town, just east of the docks and north of Fish’s Ale. The bakery sells bread, pastries, muffins, cookies and baked goods and baking supplies. Brewing supplies are also available. An oven inside is available for use when Voleen and her staff aren’t busy making goods with it.

Vhalen:

Here we are again, talking about the Overlord’s past… such dangerous talk. Well, before the Freeport Militia comes to pick us all up, I have a few thoughts to share. First off, don’t be so sure that the SOE Empire forgot about the Overlord’s original surname. How much do you really know about his past? Better yet, how much does he know?

SoulFire Text

Source: part of the everquest 1 paladin epic

You say, ‘Hail, Kalatrina Plossen’

Kalatrina Plossen says ‘Hail! Welcome to the Hall of Truth. We, the Knights of Truth, are all the hope this city has of loosening the grip of Lucan D’lere and his militia. I seek a young knight to [serve the will of the Truthbringer].’

You say, ‘I serve the will of the Truthbringer.’

Kalatrina Plossen says ‘Stand tall then, knight! We have need of your services. We have sent a man to infiltrate the militia. We fear he may soon be found out. Take him this note of warning. Say the words, ‘Truth is good,’ and you shall find him. Be careful, young knight. The militia does not take prisoners.’

You say, ‘Hail, Guard Alayle’

Guard Alayle says ‘Greetings, citizen! You should not be in the Militia House. These are restricted grounds. Please leave at once unless you have business here.’

You say, ‘Truth is good.’

Guard Alayle says ‘Ssshhh!! Pipe down. The others might hear you. You must have something for me. Kalatrina must have given you something if you serve the Hall of Truth. If you have nothing, please leave. You will blow my cover.

Guard Alayle says ‘This is not good news. I must leave immediately. Here. Take this to Kala.. I mean my father. I found it on the floor of Sir Lucan D’Lere’s quarters. Thanks again, messenger. I got this just in time.’

ZIMEL’S BLADES
….. … …. .. …
……. …… … .. … ……. …. …

You say, ‘Hail, Krazen Loosh’

Krazen Loosh says ‘The towering wall of stone is clearly unmovable at this point, being held in place by collection of magical energies.’

Krazen Loosh says ‘Hello, Alayle. We just got a message from Qeynos. I think you should come with me.’

Guard Alayle says ‘Oh no!! It is too late!! Run!!’

Krazen Loosh says ‘As you try to open penetrate the stone wall it is clearly being held in place by a powerful force.’

Guard Alayle says ‘My comrades will avenge my death.’

Kalatrina Plossen says ‘Zimel’s Blades?! Hmmmmm. It doesn’t ring a bell and the remainder of the writing is too hard to make out. It kind of looks like a list of prices. You know, down at the Office of the People they might be able to tell us if this place exists. Go speak with Rashinda. She knows all about Freeport. If [Zimel’s Blades] existed, you must report back to me what happened to it.’

You say, ‘Hail, Rashinda Elore’

Rashinda Elore says ‘Hello. I am Rashinda Elore. The city Landholder Manager. If you have business to discuss, please direct it to my two clerks downstairs. Good day.’

You say, ‘What do you know of Zimel’s Blades?’

Rashinda Elore says ‘Ariska Zimel was a human blacksmith, a master when it came to making swords, I hear. He kept to himself a lot. He disappeared about one year ago. A lot of people were disappointed when we had to condemn Zimel’s Blades. All the merchandise was handed over to Groflah Steadirt. Mostly charred junk.’

You say, ‘Who is Groflah Steadirt?’

Rashinda Elore says ‘Groflah Steadirt is the dwarven owner of Groflah’s Forge which is right near here. He was Ariska Zimel’s best friend. They were apparently avid travelers before settling down here in Freeport. I guess it was during their travels that they picked up the fine arts of the forge. You should talk to Groflah about Zimel. He can tell you more than I can.’

You say, ‘Why was Zimel’s Blades condemned?’

Rashinda Elore says ‘About a week after Ariska Zimel’s disappearance, strange noises were heard from his shop. Loud booms and rumbling as though the earth itself were exploding. When the militia got to the shop, they said the shop was badly burned by an exploding boiler. They had us condemn the building due to its unsafe structure.’

You say, ‘Have you heard of Zimel’s Blades?’

Rashinda Elore says ‘Zimel’s Blades? It used to be a fine place of rare weaponry. [Ariska Zimel] was the owner. No one knows what happened to the man. He just vanished overnight. His shop used to be in East Freeport which is now a slum, er, I mean, which now has plenty of available lots for sale with plenty of potential. As for Zimel’s Blades, we condemned it.’

You say, ‘Zimel’s Blades was condemned’

Kalatrina Plossen says ‘Why would Lucan visit a condemned building? He must be searching for something. When I last visited the local forge, I heard rumors of Lucan searching for a sword named Soulfire. If this is true, you must find it first! No more power should go his way. Seek this sword out!’

You say, ‘Hail, Groflah Steadirt’

Groflah Steadirt says ‘Greetings, adventurer! Certainly a person who looks as hardened as yourself deserves a fine blade to match your prowess. Here at Groflah’s Forge, we supply you with only the finest quality weapons.’

You say, ‘Do you know Ariska Zimel?’

Groflah Steadirt says ‘Zimel!! I do not know who you mean. Now go away. I am very busy. I will not talk here!!’

Hand him the tattered flier.

Groflah Steadirt says ‘Where did you find this? This was the main price list of Zimel’s Blades, but it should be all burnt up. I was at Zimel’s right after the fire and I did not see it hanging where it should have been. The entire inside was gutted and . . . wait . . . the sequence of the dots!! Hmmm. I cannot talk with you here. Meet me at the Seafarer’s by the docks at night. Give me the note when next we meet.’

You say, ‘Hail, Groflah Steadirt’

Groflah Steadirt says ‘Greetings, ! Join in the [celebration]! Have a few drinks. Alas, there are no [Tumpy Tonics].’

Hand Groflah the tattered flier.

Groflah Steadirt says ‘This used to be hanging in Zimel’s Blades. It is the price list. It is badly faded though. There was a fire in Zimel’s Blades and I was on the scene just afterward. I did not see this hanging. I wonder who took it . . . Hmmmm.. oh, yes.. the markings on the list! It is a code! Here. I will fill it in. Read it. You probably do not even know who Ariska is.’

ZIMEL’S BLADES
..h… e… l .. p.. …
..c….. ..a…. … p.. t… ..i….v. …. …

You say ‘Who is Ariska?’

Groflah Steadirt says ‘Ariska Zimel was my best friend. He and I learned our knowledge of metal from such places as Halas and Kaladim. When he disappeared, it seemed to involve foul play. He must be alive somewhere in the city. I pray this is not the work of [Pietro Zarn].’

You say, ‘Who is Pietro Zarn?’

Groflah Steadirt says ‘While we were traveling through the Lavastorm Mountains, we happened upon a caravan. They wore emblems in honor of the evil god, Innoruuk. They did not see us, but we saw them. And most importantly of all, Ariska saw the apparent leader’s sword. It was glowing with great energy. Suddenly, the evil knights were in a battle. The knights gave chase, leaving their camp unattended. The knight who owned the sword left it behind, opting to fight with another, leading me to believe it was not his to begin with. It was at this point that Ariska ran down and grabbed the sword. A few weeks later, we were to learn that the knight was a powerful man by the name of Pietro Zarn and that he was looking for a sword stolen from him. He called it .. Soulfire. I believe Zarn must have finally found Ariska.’

Groflah Steadirt says ‘Sing it, lass! Sir Lucan D’Lere is no friend of the people.’

Henna Treghost says ‘Sing us a melody.’

Branis Noolright says ‘Here’s one for Sir Lucan… He’s just a ruler. In a long line of rulers. Looking for a few more orcs to slay. They say that he fights them with one hand tied to his back. And he won’t leave Freeport till you remember his name. Thank you.’

Tykar Renlin says ‘That man is no just ruler. He has jailed me and my friend Zimel for merely begging.

Henna Treghost says ‘Music!! Music!!’

Trolon Lightleer says ‘My city is mighty and all shall learn to cower. We are nothing less than the ultimate power. My city is pure and filled with beautiful charm. I shall conquer you to save you from harm. My city shall first send its guards to back you in times of need. Soon you shall learn to live under my laws, indeed. So bow down when you see me and give out my favorite cheer, ‘All Hail Antonius Bail!’ My city is Qeynos and there is nothing to fear.’

Tlin Bowfright says ‘I wish the Qeynos Guards would come and conquer Freeport. The Freeport Militia are nothing more than mercenaries and criminals.’

Talym Shoontar says ‘Antonius Bayle is a blithering fool.’

Tlin Bowfright says ‘The only blithering fool in here is you, Talym Shoontar.’

Talym Shoontar says ‘All right, Tlin! I am going to smash your face in!’

You say, ‘Hail, Tykar Renlin’

Tykar Renlin says ‘Do you have any spare coppers for a thirsty soul?’

You say, ‘What can you tell me of Zimel?’

Tykar Renlin says ‘What?! You know my friend Zimel?! I would like to speak of him, but my mouth is so parched. Maybe a fine grog would loosen my lips. I am uncertain which flavor shall do the trick.’

Tykar Renlin says ‘Oooh!! That is the taste. My lips are almost loose. Maybe another will do the trick.’

Tykar Renlin says ‘Oooh!! That is the taste. My lips are almost loose. Maybe another will do the trick.’

Tykar Renlin says ‘Oooh!! That is the taste. My lips are almost loose. Maybe another will do the trick.’

Tykar Renlin says ‘Ahh!! That was good. Now where were we?. Oh yes. My friend Zimel is a fellow beggar. He was locked up in the arena. They were going to let him go when the Freeport Militia came for him. Ha!! He is crazy as a troll now. I took this blanket from his cell before I was released. I no longer need it and my guilt has reached its peak. I do not want crazy old Zimel to freeze. Perhaps you can return it to him.’

a prisoner says ‘unngh!!.. Biggle and boo.. Goggle froo..’

You say, ‘Hail, a prisoner’

a prisoner says ‘Aaaarghhh!!.. Buggl n gump.. Figgle and fump..’

You say, ‘Are you Ariska Zimel?’

a prisoner stares deeply into your eyes.. Very eerie!!

a prisoner says ‘Bog n Goo.. Blanket too!!’

a prisoner says ‘Bog n Goo.. Blanket too!!’

a prisoner hands you something and says, ‘Hide, hide, safe, cee.. lerk has the clue.. Must travel.. Travel.. Travel.. Tunaria’s corridor..’

You say, ‘Hail, Bank Clerk Jaylin’

Bank Clerk Jaylin says ‘Greetings! I am Jaylin Monel, your Highkeep bank clerk. If you are here to close an account, please return your strongbox key to my assistant Kiolna and she will return any items you may have stored.’

You say, ‘Hail, Assistant Kiolna’

Assistant Kiolna says ‘Hello! I am Jaylin’s new assistant, Kiolna. If you wish to hand in your keys, please give them to me and I will be happy to assist you! It is a pleasure doing business with you.’

Assistant Kiolna says ‘I am sorry to see you check out. Here is all you had in your box. We hope to serve you again. Have a nice day!! Next!’

Ariska,
For your great service to the Temple of Life I shall honor your request and hold Soulfire until I see this note presented to me by either you or a noble courier of the Hall of Truth.

Brother Hayle

You say, ‘Hail, Priestess Jahnda’

Priestess Jahnda says ‘Welcome to the Temple of Life, where the will of Rodcet Nife, the Prime Healer, is carried out. I am the High Priestess Jahnda. If you require any training in our ways, please talk to any of our priests or any of the paladins of the Temple of Life.’

You say, ‘Where is Brother Hayle?’

Priestess Jahnda says ‘Brother Hayle Mool is one of our finest clerics. He could convert anyone to the ways of Rodcet Nife. Recently, he has been out in the [Plains of Karana] trying to befriend the [Splitpaw clan]. I pray he has not become their prisoner or even worse, their dinner.’

You say, ‘Hail, Brother Hayle’

Brother Hayle says ‘This is no place for you. These Splitpaws are very fierce. Only the power of Rodcet Nife will guide them to the light. By the way, I might warn you that the cells here lock behind you.’

Brother Hayle says ‘Finally!! I see that Ariska has found a noble knight to retrieve Soulfire. Per Ariska’s orders I am not to give Soulfire to you until you can show me [proof of nobility]. You must honor both the Temple of Life as well as the Hall of Truth and to a high degree. Only then shall you hold Soulfire.’

You say, ‘What proof of nobility?’

Brother Hayle says ‘I require the returned note I gave you, a Testimony of Truth, a Sword of Faith and finally the hilt of Soulfire. The Testimony and Sword of Faith are earned in the Hall of Truth, but for the hilt of Soulfire you shall have to battle [Xicotl].’

You say, ‘Who is Xicotl?’

Brother Hayle says ‘Xicotl is the evil troll who attempted to steal Soulfire from the vaults of the Temple of Life. The hilt of Soulfire broke off during the battle and now rests in the hands of this troll shadowknight. From what I have heard, he is frequently an invited guest at the castle called Mistmoore. Woe to any paladin who dares set foot upon the land of Mistmoore, but should you attempt it you might search the guest rooms for the troll. May Rodcet Nife walk with you.’

Valeron Dushire says ‘I am Sir Valeron Dushire, leader of the order of the Knights of Truth. If your soul shines with purity and strength, I urge you to join our order. The might of Mithaniel Marr stands behind all who join. Soon that might will help us free this city from the tyranny of the [Freeport Militia].’

You say, ‘What Freeport Militia?’

Valeron Dushire says ‘The Freeport Militia took control of this city long ago. They are nothing more than a group of thugs not worthy of respect. They follow the words of [Sir Lucan] D’Lere. He has been a thorn in this city’s side for too long. If you wish to aid us in the fight against tyranny, go speak with Jemoz or Sir Theron. May the Truthbringer shine upon your soul.’

You say, ‘Who is Sir Lucan?’

Valeron Dushire says ‘Lucan is a bad seed. You see, I trained Sir Lucan. He was nothing more than a street rat who was taken in by the Temple of Marr. The priests taught him and found him to be very agile and strong. They requested either the Priests of Marr or the Knights of Truth take him on as a squire. Gygus could not spare the trainers at the time and so we took the boy. The boy became a man, and a very formidable knight. Then something [went awry].’

You say, ‘What went awry?’

Valeron Dushire says ‘During one of our crusades into the lands of Norrath, we left Sir Lucan in charge of the remaining knights. He did much good and the people respected him. He was overtaken by power. He soon began to hire mercenaries to guard the city, calling them the Freeport Militia. His true downfall began when he killed Sentry Dillius, a paladin of the Priests of Marr. His divine powers were stripped from his soul. He was a paladin no longer. He and his militia now control the city. They treat it as their playground and bully the populace. Someone must [stop Sir Lucan].’

You say, ‘I will stop Sir Lucan’

Valeron Dushire says ‘That would be good, but I doubt you can. We have been trying for years and are unable to get him apart from the militia. If you do the impossible and destroy Sir Lucan, bring me his testimony. Every knight of the Hall of Truth carries a signed testimony. Sir Lucan still holds his.’

Sir Lucan D`Lere says ‘Die, dog!!’

Sir Lucan D`Lere says ‘You cannot stop the undead!! Foolish mortal!!’

TESTIMONY OF TRUTH

I believe in the might of Mithaniel Marr. I shall uphold the words of Marr and defend them with my life. I shall protect the righteous weak and avenge the souls of those whose life has been taken for naught. From this day forth I shall become a living vessel for the ideals of the Truthbringer and if I should ever falter from his grace may he cast me from this life and into the lifeless void.

PRAISE BE TO MARR

Sir Lucan D’Lere

—-

Valeron Dushire says ‘Praise be to Marr!! You have done the impossible!! Sir Lucan is finally sent to the higher courts of the Tribunal. The city now has a chance to prosper. The Hall of Truth has been redeemed and gives you thanks. Take this. It is the Sword of Faith. May you wield it with righteousness. Beware of the remainder of the militia. They will be hunting for your head.’

You say ‘Hail, Merko Quetalis’

Merko Quetalis says ‘Hail, good citizen! You have entered the Hall of Truth. What is it you seek? Many citizens come to request aid in dealing with the local rogues or the oppression of our sworn enemies, the Freeport Militia. A few valiant ones have been [summoned to the Hall of Truth].’

You say, ‘I have been summoned to the Hall of Truth.’

Merko Quetalis says ‘You have been summoned? You do not have the look of nobility. You must be a [squire]. There are many squires who have been summoned to our Hall. Not all pass the [Test of Truth].’

You say ‘I am a squire.’

Merko Quetalis says ‘Then I welcome you, Squire . Being a squire is the first step to becoming a true knight of the Hall of Truth. Remember always to protect and serve the meek. I have a [small task] which suits a squire perfectly.’

You say ‘What small task?’

Merko Quetalis says ‘Venture to the Commonlands and seek out our noble friend Altunic Jartin. He lives and works out of his home. Hand him this note.’

Altunic,
I have sent this squire to look into your problem for you. Hope to see you at services at the Temple of Marr.

Sir Merko Quetalis
Hall of Truth

You say ‘Hail, Altunic Jartin.’

Altunic Jartin says ‘Greetings, traveler! Have you need of provisions or perhaps other wares? I sell what I find upon the battlegrounds of the Commonlands.’

Altunic Jartin says ‘You are the one they have sent? A squire?!! I hope you can help me. I gather items strewn upon the grounds of the Commonlands. I sell them at good prices. Lately, I have been terrorized by a human rogue named Narls. He will no doubt appear at my [house] soon. Bring his head to me.’ (Note that Narl’s name is misspelled in this text; it doesn’t have an S in it.)

You say, ‘Where is your house?’

Altunic Jartin says ‘Follow me.’

Squire Narl says ‘Death to all who oppose Innoruuk’s will!!’

Squire Narl’s corpse says ‘Innoruuk has seen what you have done. His hate, along with the Dismal Rage, will find you.’

Altunic Jartin says ‘You have performed a great service to me, but I fear others will attack me while I stroll the countryside. It would be very noble of you to fetch me a cloth shirt for protection from wicked creatures. It is not much, but it will help.’

Altunic Jartin says ‘Thank you. You are very noble for a squire. I can see you becoming a very valuable asset to the Hall of Truth. Take this token. Tell Merko that you have [earned the Token of Generosity].

You say ‘I have earned the Token of Generosity.’

Merko Quetalis says ‘Go to the deserts of North Ro. Seek out the desert tarantulas. Stand and face this dreaded creature. If you are lucky, you will find a venom sac. This is what I require. When you return, hand it to me.’

Merko Quetalis says ‘You have earned the token of bravery. Now you must ask yourself if you are ready to face true fear. You will have but one chance. If you feel you are powerful enough to easily slay that desert tarantula, then hand me both tokens earned and you shall face the Test of Truth.’

You say ‘What Test of Truth?’

Merko Quetalis says ‘Only when a squire is ready, may he tempt his fate. All he need do is hand the tokens of bravery and generosity to me. If the squire survives his ordeal, then he or she shall enter the order of the Knights of Truth. The squire will be given the Testimony of Truth and become a respected knight.’

Merko Quetalis says ‘Go to the open sewer across the way. Inside you shall find your opponent. Victory shall bring you your final token. Return it to me. Remember our ways and remember our foes. Send them to their judgement in the afterlife. Be swift with your thoughts. May Marr be with you.’

You say, ‘Hail, Guard Willia’

Guard Willia says ‘Please, let me go. I shall leave the [Freeport Militia]. I did not know they were such a vile group.’

You say, ‘What about the Freeport Militia?’

Guard Willia says ‘I thought they were nothing more than the local militia. Little did I know they were so vile. Now I am stuck [here] and I ask for your forgiveness.’

You say, ‘Why are you here?’

Guard Willia says ‘I came here to escape the militia and ask [Merko to forgive] me.’

You say, ‘Why ask Merko to forgive you?’

Guard Willia says ‘I had a small encounter with his wife, my aunt. She was quite red after that altercation. I guess I upset her in a great way, somehow. Could you please go ask Merko to forgive [Willia]. I shall wait here for his answer.’

If you don’t attack Willia for a while, she will say:

Guard Willia says ‘Please do not harm me!! I am a lady underneath this garb. I just wanted to join the [Freeport Militia] to help my people.. Please.. Please.. I am nobody. Marr have mercy. I give you the truth. Is that not what you stand for? Merko is my Uncle!!’

You say, ‘Who is Willia?’

Merko Quetalis says ‘She is my niece. Lucan ordered her to kill my wife.. She did. She now belongs to the Freeport Militia. As part of the militia, she must die!! Let no militia member stand in the way of nobility.’

Guard Willia says ‘Thank you, my friend. I shall mend my ways.. maybe.’

Guard Willia’s corpse says ‘Your name shall be added to the most wanted list of the Freeport Militia!!’

Merko Quetalis says ‘You have performed well. You have shown your allegiance to truth and cast aside the Freeport Militia. The militia will surely despise you from now on. This is how they treat the Knights of Truth. Beware. The followers of Marr stand alone in this city.’

Brother Hayle says ‘I will not hand Soulfire to you until you hand me the Soulfire hilt, Testimony of Truth, Sword of Faith and the returned note. I require them as [proof of nobility].’

Brother Hayle says ‘I will not hand Soulfire to you until you hand me the Soulfire hilt, Testimony of Truth, Sword of Faith and the returned note. I require them as [proof of nobility].’

Brother Hayle says ‘I will not hand Soulfire to you until you hand me the Soulfire hilt, Testimony of Truth, Sword of Faith and the returned note. I require them as [proof of nobility].’

Brother Hayle says ‘You have proven yourself worthy to hold Soulfire. Do not let her slip into the hands of evil. There are many who wish to free the many trapped souls of shadowknights and necromancers trapped inside the blade. The power of the blade can be called upon to heal you if need be. May Rodcet Nife and the twins of Marr hold you in their glory.’

Congratulations on getting your SoulFire

Moorgard interviews Antonia

Moorgard: First off, I’m at a bit of a loss as to how I should address you. Do you have the title of queen? Should I refer to you as “your highness”?

Antonia: Actually, Antonia is my title. It was decreed by Antonius Bayle the First that no ruler of Qeynos should ever be called king. As a result, the name Antonius became the title taken by every descendent of that bloodline who wore the crown. Being a woman, I took the liberty of altering the title slightly.

Moorgard: Your ascension to the throne of Qeynos was a bit unusual. Is it true that you were not even born in the city?

Antonia: That is correct. I was born on an island in the Ocean of Tears and raised by the Sisters of Erollisi, an order of female warriors. I arrived in Qeynos about a decade ago.

Moorgard: What happened to the Bayle family over the years?

Antonia: As you know, the last five centuries have been extremely difficult for the people of Norrath. There was a devastating loss of life due to war and cataclysms, and that loss touched the house of Bayle as well. Many of my ancestors died in battle or due to disaster, yet the family line continued. But the greatest blow came just after the Shattering destroyed the moon of Luclin. During a ceremony at sea to bury the honored dead, the royal barge was destroyed by a terrible meteor shower. There were no survivors. Most assumed that the Bayle line had been obliterated.

Moorgard: How do you fit into the Bayle lineage?

Antonia: I am a descendent of Antonius Bayle IV. He fell in love with a high elf named Lady Shae, and she bore a child. Lady Shae did not want to raise her child within the city of Qeynos and she knew the elves in Felwithe would look down upon her for loving a human, so she went to live with the Sisters of Erollisi. Antonius Bayle IV understood her choice, and gave her a handwritten scroll that acknowledged the child’s paternity. When the Age of Cataclysms began and the ocean became too turbulent to cross, the island was isolated. Though Lady Shae herself perished, her family lived on, and eventually I was born. As a child I had no idea of my heritage, but the Sisters had sworn to Lady Shae that they would keep the scroll safe and pass it down to her descendents.

Moorgard: How did you come to Qeynos?

Antonia: When the cataclysms finally subsided and the seas began to calm, a ship of humans arrived on our island. Among the things they told us about the last several centuries was that the Bayle family had been wiped out.The Sisters were startled to learn this and decided to reveal the truth of my lineage to me. The ship’s captain agreed to take us to Qeynos, and four of the Sisters vowed to travel with me and act as my personal guard.

Moorgard: What was going on in Qeynos at the time, and what was the reaction to your arrival?

Antonia: Following the destruction of the royal barge, the city was ruled by a council called the Circle of Five. When I arrived in Qeynos, I was brought before the council and they verified that the scrolls explaining my

lineage were genuine. I was little more than a girl at the time, so they thought it best that I receive some training in what it meant to be a leader. When I was finally presented to the people of Qeynos, I must say that I was very touched and honored that they embraced me as a true Bayle. Seven years ago I took the throne and assumed the title of Antonia Bayle. Since then I have worked closely with the Circle of Five, who remain invaluable to me in my efforts to be a fair leader.

Moorgard: If you don’t mind my asking, what is your given name?

Antonia: I was named Shirrana, though everyone now calls me Antonia.

Moorgard: One of your ancestors was a high elf, yet you certainly look human.

Antonia: Aside from Lady Shae, the majority of my bloodline is indeed human. That is what I consider myself to be, though I hope that I have inherited at least some of the grace and wisdom of the elven people.

Moorgard: If you’ll forgive yet another personal question, what

is your marital status?

Antonia: I am unwed. The council thinks it wise that I choose a husband and produce an heir so that the Bayle family line may continue. I agree that this is a duty I have to my people, so it is a matter I shall investigate

in the near future.

Moorgard: That’s excellent news. How do you feel about monks?

Antonia: They make excellent servants. Besides, don’t you have some sort of vow of celibacy?

Moorgard: Okay, I can take a hint. Getting back on track, how are relations between Qeynos and Freeport these days?

Antonia: Rocky, but tolerable. I don’t trust Lucan D’Lere one bit, but so far he is abiding by our treaty to take in refugees from the Shattered Lands. There is currently an uneasy peace between our cities.

Moorgard: I chatted with the Overlord recently. He paints himself as Norrath’s last, best hope for prosperity.

Antonia: Ridiculous! If Lucan has his way, he will enslave the world and use it to feed his insatiable greed and massive ego. He cares nothing for anyone’s welfare but his own. The only reason he accepts refugees into Freeport is to expand his empire. He even had the audacity to demand first pick of all refugees so that he could keep the strong and send the sick and injured to Qeynos. I refused, and he finally agreed to let the refugees choose their own fate. Do not be fooled by his attempts to rewrite history or taken in by his false air of benevolence.

Moorgard: What goals do you have for your reign?

Antonia: I wish for the citizens of Qeynos to work together to rebuild our lands and return to the prosperity of the past. It is my firm belief that we can only achieve this goal through fellowship and unity. Though Lucan

and the forces of darkness may oppose us, he cannot stand in our way. Tyrants inevitably fall, even those with unnaturally long life spans.

Moorgard: Those are some pretty harsh words for your rival.

Antonia: I do not fear Lucan, nor am I afraid of conflict. But I will honor the treaty we have made. If it is ever to be broken, it will be his twisted hand that does it. Until that day, we will be watching his actions closely.

The Freeport Infirmary and Lunacy Asylum

Antonia may be displaying powers closely tied to items she carries. Don’t be too swift to bind her class down. We all remember Sir Lucan from the Age of Turmoil, don’t we? The Knights of Truth were glad to see his powers removed as his fall from grace began, but he has new powers now. The origin of these new powers have yet to be revealed and they help define his class and even his current biological classification.

I see someone mentioned an asylum. Does anyone know that Freeport does have an asylum? It cannot be found in game, but it is part of the background of the city. It is a shame it could not make it into the game.

The Freeport Infirmary and Lunacy Asylum

This sprawling compound takes up nearly an entire district. It is divided into two sections meant to treat two different types of ailments. The infirmary section treats many types of physical ailments, often through unconventional practices. The asylum is where the crazed and incurable patients are dragged and locked away in little grimy rooms with little or no comfort. The mental patients often undergo agonizing treatments. The treatments usually release the patient to the death of the gray fields rather than the streets of Freeport. Secretly, this is place of horror and pain created for biological research and the harvesting of resources for mostly necromantic purposes. This is the domain of the Surgeons of Solace, a caste of healers, scholars and secret assassins. They test and operate on those patients who come to them for physical or mental solace. The asylum is where most of the horror takes place. This section is kept locked at all times. It is nearly impossible to get into the asylum unless admitted. It is common for the Freeport Militia to send some of its most rebellious prisoners to this hospital, ailment or not.
