Notes on the Akheva of Maiden’s Eye

Notes on the Akheva of Maiden’s Eye

by Fassleth Buzild

Updated by Ronard Cranner

The four-armed creations of Luclin, known as the Akheva, are intimidating both physically and mentally. So, why then did I go amongst them to learn a bit of their history? Because some allowed me, and that right there is evidence that the Akheva are not a unified people of like-minded aggression towards those of us in Sanctus Seru.

Perhaps there is a schism here to be exploited?I have learned that the Akheva ruins found within the Maiden’s Eye are the remains of a once great city. The city was called Ka Vethan. They claim it’s marble walls and striking architecture have been reduced to rubble and crumbling buildings, over the years due to the devastating storm that rages in the region to this day. Apparently, it wasn’t always this way!
Why then do these Akheva remain here? We know of another city, one that houses their leader, Aten Ha Ra. Do they remain simply due to sentimentalism, or familiarity?

I found my answer! Civil war keeps the Akheva of Ka Vethan separated from those within Vex Thal. They hold Aten Ha Ra responsible for the storm that rages, claiming she sent it as a weapon to slay their previous leader, Akelha’Ra, and anyone else who supported her. It succeeded and Aten Ha Ra ascended to the throne, becoming High Priestess.
Though defeated, and their ruler slain, Akelha’Ra’s surviving supporters remain loyal to her. Now outcasts, they choose to stay within the ruins of Ka Vethan for an unknown purpose. They refuse to speak on the subject. I am not sure if they are being purposely evasive, or if they simply don’t have a good reason to explain it for themselves.

Some say they are simply hiding, amongst the rubble of their defeat, in fear of the new ruler, but a more common regard of their actions is one of speculation surrounding a dark and much deeper purpose, one that remains well-guarded beneath anachronistic demeanor that fuels their stay.

Perhaps they are simply biding their time before enacting vengeance on the storm caller, Aten Ha Ra? This is very interesting!

Thus concludes “Notes on the Akheva of Maiden’s Eye” by Fassleth Buzild. Why would I, a citizen and council member of Sanctus Seru, above reproach, provide these notes of admitted fraternization between one of our own from ages ago, now?

It is no surprise that I can find no records that his study was ever acted upon, or of his fate. He was most certainly put to the Questions as a result, and his study provided as evidence of his intended erosion and degradation of our great society.

No, my reason for collecting Fassleth’s study is because I find it interesting that another force stuck here on Luclin came to the same conclusion he had.

Our scouts had recently reported witnessing Akheva entering the shissar temple in The Grey! They had met no resistance upon entry and were marching in with grimlings in tow. Fearing such an alignment, we have investigated.

We found that the Akheva in question were from Ka Vethan. They had been approached by the shissar, with claims of Emperor Ssraeshza’s greatness, and offered vengeance upon Aten Ha Ra, in exchange for their cooperation with the vile snakemen! They must have accepted the bargain.

I would have thought the Akheva too smart for that. They must know they cannot trust the shissar! This just goes to prove Lord Inquisitor Seru is right once more, vile beasts of darkness will always find congress together in shadow.

Together in Truth, forever in light!

Saga of Akelha’Ra

I wanted to record this event before I forgot any of the details, or gods forbid, something should happen to me. The adventures I have had, and the people I have met, ever since arriving on Luclin, have been extraordinary, but this one stands out above all others. I can’t help but suspect it is merely the beginning …

Perhaps recalling the events, like this, will also help reveal what I must do next?

While exploring the Akheva ruins, I located what had obviously been a sacrificial pit, long ago. That is when I saw the shimmering presence.

Its voice invaded my mind, drawing images of past, present, and future together, into a perverse harmony. Some images I recognised as my own, but the others seem to be coming from the spirit’s own memories.

My mind was filled with visions of a great swirl of clouds and lightning. I swear I could feel the wind of the storm cutting through my armour. It looked as if the storm was rolling across the surface of Luclin. Then the vision showed me several Akheva standing at the entrance of a great temple. The storm was bearing down on them.

Suddenly, my view shifted. I was still looking at the storm, but it appeared to be moving toward me now. I stood now amongst the group of Akheva. The one next to me was obviously the leader of the group, as he was wearing beautiful ornate robes, and held a sceptre.

My vision turned to follow the robed Akheva up the stairs, into the temple. The figure raised his sceptre toward the storm and began to recite unfamiliar words. A crackle of magical energy blazed across the sky, seemingly in defiance of the raging storm. The energy quickly dissipated however, and the storm continued to bear down on the temple. The figure cried out in pain as the sceptre in his hand shattered. The softly glowing gem from the sceptre head rolled silently down the steps and disappeared.

Suddenly, I was released from the visions. The shimmering presence remained before me, as if in waiting.

That’s when I realised the gem I had just watched roll down the temple steps in the vision was similar to a wisp stone I had obtained earlier. I dug it out of my satchel, and presented it to the shimmering presence.

It began to quiver and shake then appeared to grow and shrink, in complete disregard to natural laws. The light in the temple around me dimmed until I was surrounded by an impenetrable cloak of shadows. Fear gripped my heart as my vision slowly adapted to accommodate the low light. When I was finally able to make out the figure before me, I found myself silently praying for the darkness to return.

The formless presence had been replaced by an imposing spirit of an Akheva high priestess! Her hollow eyes locked with mine. I had the distinct impression that she could see right into the darkest shadows of my soul. She opened her mouth to speak, but the sounds I heard came from inside my mind.

“Greetings mortal, thank you for releasing me from my tormented prison. I am Akelha’Ra, once high priestess of Luclin and leader of the Akheva. This form before you now is a fading remnant of my former existence. The storm was the cause of my imprisonment in the world of undying spirits.”

I was confused, and intrigued. I wondered what she had meant by that. As if in response to my unasked question she continued, “We Akheva are immortal entitites placed in this plane by the mistress of shadow. We are her most perfect creation. Death has no meaning to us, as even in death we find rebirth through the power of the mistress. My imprisonment was caused by my separation from the power of the mistress by Aten Ha Ra. It was she who sent the storm to destroy me and all who followed me.”

My next question had barely formed in my mind, when Akelha’Ra answered it.

Aten Ha Ra is a reflection of myself. An entity created from my own consciousness, a reflection of a shadow. She now holds the seat of grand power in Vex Thal, and I have not the power to gain entry to the city, let alone face her. You must find my sceptre that was lost in the storm to gain entry to Vex Thal. The sceptre has likely lost much of its power from being shattered. Once it is reassembled you will need to merge a Orb of Luclinite with a source of celestial power inside the sceptre. The spirits whisper that the Shissar Emperor holds the power to manipulate such energy. Be wary of him, he is heralded as the slayer of gods, the defiler of realities.”

“Vex Thal is the sacred home of the Akheva. The place where our goddess’ power directly touches this world … ungh … I cannot summon the frame of my sceptre in my current weakened state. I need a soul to regain my pow…”

It was clear to me that she was slowly fading out of existence, before my eyes. She seemed entirely unable to speak to me now, and could only muster the strength to gesture. She pointed at the ground at my feet. Where there had been nothing, just a moment ago, was now a small emerald. I reached down to pick it up, but it disappeared silently into the shadows.

I must think upon all of this and what it may mean or require of me now.

The Scepter of Shadows

You say, ‘Hail, A shimmering presence’

A shimmering presence’s voice invades your mind, drawing images of past present and future together into a perverse harmony. Some images you recognize as your own, but the others seem to be coming from the spirit’s own [memories].’

You say, ‘What memories?’

A shimmering presence begins to glow a bit brighter. Your mind is filled with visions of a great swirl of clouds and lightning. You can almost feel the wind of the storm creeping into the chinks in your armor. It looks as if the storm is creeping across the surface of Luclin. You see several figures standing at the entrance of a [great temple]. The storm seems to be bearing down on them.’

You say, ‘What great temple?’

A shimmering presence continues to flood your mind with images of the storm bearing down on the temple. Your view suddenly shifts. You’re still looking at the storm, but it appears to be moving toward you this time. There is a creature beside you wearing a robe, holding a scepter in one of his…four arms! He is obviously the leader of the group, As he is wearing beautiful [ornate robes] compared to the rest of the four armed figures around you.

You say, ‘What ornate robes?’

A shimmering presence glows brighter still as your vision turns to follow the robed figure up the stairs of the entrance to the temple. The figure raises his scepter toward the storm and begins to recite some unfamiliar words. A crackle of magical energy blazes across the sky seemingly in defiance of the raging storm. The energy quickly dissipates however, and the storm continues to bear down on the temple. The figure cries out in pain as the scepter in his hand shatters into many shards. The sofly glowing gem from the scepter head rolls silently down the steps and disappears.

A shimmering presence begins to quiver and shake. The formless entity appears to grow and shrink in complete disregard to natural laws. The light in the temple around you appears to slowly dim until you are surrounded by an impenetrable cloak of shadows. Fear grips your heart as your vision slowly adapts to accommodate the low light. When you can finally make out the figure before you, you find yourself silently praying for the darkness to return.

You say, ‘Hail, The Spirit of Akelha`Ra’

The Spirit of Akelha`Ra ‘s hollow eyes look up at you. You have the distinct impression that she can see right into the darkest shadows of your soul. She opens her mouth to speak but the sounds you hear come from inside your mind. ‘Greetings mortal, thank you for releasing me from my [tormented prison].’

You say, ‘What tormented prison?’

The Spirit of Akelha`Ra appears to be fading in and out of existence as you speak to her. The spirit’s voice fills your mind. ‘I am Akelha`Ra, once high priestess of Luclin and leader of the Akheva. This form you see before you now is a fading remnant of my former existence. The storm was the cause of my imprisonment in the world of undying [spirits].’

You say, ‘What spirits?’

The Spirit of Akelha`Ra says ‘We Akheva are immortal entities placed in this plane by the mistrees of shadow. We are her most perfect creation. Death has no meaning to us, as even in death we find rebirth through the power of the mistress. My imprisonment was caused by my seperation from the power of the mistress by [Atenha`Ra]. It was she who sent the storm to destroy me and all that followed me.’

You say, ‘Who is Atenha`Ra?’

The Spirit of Akelha`Ra says ‘It is more then a little ironic that Atenha`Ra is a reflection of myself. An entity created from my own consciousness, a reflection of a shadow. She now holds the seat of grand power in [Vex Thal], and I have not the power to gain entry to the city, let alone face her. You must find my scepter that was lost in the storm to gain entry to Vex Thal. The scepter has likely lost much of its power from being shattered. Once it is reassembled you will need to merge a Orb of Luclinite with a source of celestial power inside the scepter. The spirits whisper that the emperor of the Shissar holds the power to manipulate such energy. Be weary of him, he is heralded as the slayer of gods, the defiler of realities.’

You say, ‘What of Vex Thal?’

The Spirit of Akelha`Ra says ‘Vex Thal is the sacred home of the Akheva. The place where Luclin’s power directly touches this world…ungh…I can not summon the frame of my scepter in my current weakened state. I need a soul to regain my pow…’ As she speaks you can see her slowly fade out of existence. You wonder how long her spirit will stay with this world. She seems entirely unable to speak to you now, and can only muster the strength to point at the ground at ______’s feet. ______ reaches down a picks up a small emerald off the ground, but it disappears silently into the shadows. Akelha`ra looks as if she is trying to speak again.’

You say, ‘What frame of your scepter?’

The Spirit of Akelha`Ra opens her mouth to speak, but the voice in your head is no longer audible. You reach forward to touch the fading shadow of a creature and draw back in horror as your hand disrupts the spirit before you. She evaporates into the shadows once more.

The Spirit of Akelha`Ra laughs quietly as the energy of the gem is absorbed into her being. She begins to chant in what you presume to be Akhevan. She suddenly cries out in pain and her image begins to flicker. She looks at ______ directly in the eyes and says, ‘Vyanemis Tuis, use my gift wisely.’ She disappears into the black marble leaving only a dark scepter frame lying on the floor. ______ picks it up.

Into the Depths of: The Akheva Ruins

Overview of the Akheva Ruins

Ka Vethan was the first stronghold of the Akheva. It was destroyed by the Maiden’s Scar, a powerful storm that erupted through countryside and now lies dormant across the skies to the twilight. All that remains of the once enormous, living citadel are piles of solid, dead matter of shadow and stone that had once composed the grand fortress.

Background Lore

Ka Vethan was the first stronghold of the Akheva – a dark, malevolent race that pays homage to the Maiden of Shadows as its creator and act as fervent guardians of what it believes to be her realm, the moon of Luclin. This first great city was destroyed by the Maiden’s Scar, a powerful storm that erupted through the countryside and now lies dormant across the twilight skies. It is known that the storm was summoned by Aten Ha Ra, one of two Akhevian priestesses, who vied for power during the ancient Akhevian civil war.

Now all that remains of the once enormous, living citadel are piles of solid, dead matter of shadow and stone that hand once composed the grand fortress. However, the destruction of this great citadel had not stopped the conflict, for the two opposing factions of the Akhevian race remain – those loyal to the presiding priestess, Aten Ha Ra, who resides in the new citadel of Vex Thal, and those who have been outcast from their society as heretics for their loyalty to the treacherous and deceased Akelha`Ra.

Immortal and androgynous in their nature, the Akheva have not forgotten this ancient conflict and both sides continue to uphold a fierce rivalry and disdain for one another. Akelha`Ra’s loyal supporters remain fiercely devout to their initial cause have not resolved to lay their ultimate purpose to rest beside their fallen leader. The outcasts remain within the ruins of Ka Vethan, but their purpose is guarded by an impenetrable umbra of mystery. Some believe that the outcast of Akheva remain amongst the rubble of their defeat out of fear for their enemies” wrath, but a more common regard of their actions is one of speculation surrounding a dark and much deeper purpose, one that remains well-guarded beneath anachronistic demeanor that fuels their stay.

The Centi, a group of Shadow Tegi who try to help keep the Akheva secluded, now guard those who chose to stay behind. They have taken over parts of the Ruins to hold as their own. The Centi are essentially an army that the Akheva use. They guard the halls, rooms and Akheva who are nearest to them. They are typically found close to one another because they feel that they can cause the most harm when they ban together.

The Great Seal

The seal of Luclin sits atop of her followers amidst the ruins. Her worshippers come before the great seal to pay homage and pray to their god.

Death’s Toll

Devoted followers of Luclin can be found praying in this large room. Occasionally, a Centi is sacrificed in the name of Luclin. Luclin’s followers surround the Centi that is being sacrificed. The followers chant and sing praising Luclin and bring offerings to their god. In other areas of the Ruins additional sacrifices are being made to Luclin. However, these generally take form in murder.

Dangers

Adventurers who have braved and survived through the ruins of Ka Vethan report a large variety of strange creatures dwelling the confines of the ruined city. Most notable of these creatures are the centi – beings of tangible shadow and life. These creatures, constructed out of the physical forms of the Tegi prisoners and the enchanted blood of the Akheva priests, obey the every command given to them by their masters.

Shaded Stones, golems of solidified shadow and primal earth, serve their Akheva creators mindlessly. Behemoths of brute strength and unnatural speed, the Shaded Stones make deadly adversaries for even the most seasoned warriors or cunning of rogues. However, strangest of the Akheva’s servants are the Mind Burrowers – fierce creatures of mass intellect and a wily malevolence notorious for their ability to drain the spiritual and arcane essence of mana from their victims.

Beside the tortured constructs of the Tegi and other strange, dark beings to inhabit the ruins are the Akheva outcasts. Despite their conflict and differences with the great Akhevian Empire, ruled by Aten Ha Ra, the Akheva retain their absolute loyalty to Luclin and the ultimate cause of their existence – to abolish all intruders from the face of their divine maiden’s world. Any and all outsiders are greeted with hostility, and countless adventures or unfortunate wanderers have found their end at the arms of these deadly guardians of Luclin.
