“Aquaman” director James Wan is returning to the sea for his next feature film. He’s developing a remake of “Creature From the Black Lagoon” and is in early talks to direct for Universal Pictures.
The project is described as a “grounded modernized retelling that leans into visceral horror whilst paying respect to the original classic.” It’s been 70 years since the “Creature From the Black Lagoon” first graced the big screen in the 1954 adaptation directed by Jack Arnold and starring Richard Carlson and Julia Adams. Over the years, several directors including Guillermo del Toro have tried to reboot the black-and-white monster movie about a group of scientists who encounter a prehistoric monster in the Amazonian waters, but none have gotten off the ground.

Tyler Perry’s latest film “Divorce in the Black” not only drew strong viewership — Nielsen reported that it hit more than 498 million minutes watched in its first four days of availability on Amazon Prime Video — but according to Amazon, the soapy drama has also driven more sign-ups to Prime Video in the U.S. than any Amazon MGM Studios-produced movie to-date.
The declaration comes after “Divorce in the Black” made its debut on the Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart, where it came in as the No. 3 movie of the July 8-14 viewing window behind Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and “If” on Paramount+. When divided by the film’s nearly 2.5-hour length, its 498 million-minute total during that window (the film began streaming on July 11) translates to an estimated 3.5 million views.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is the newest member of the billion-dollar club.
The superhero sequel, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as their comic book alter egos, has grossed $494.3 million in North America and $535.1 million internationally for a grand total of $1.029 billion at the global box office. It’s the second release of 2024, following Disney’s Pixar smash “Inside Out 2” with $1.558 billion, to surpass the billion-dollar mark.
Notably, it’ll soon overtake 2019’s “Joker” as the highest-grossing R-rated film in history.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” has been a needed win for Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. The once-untouchable comic book giant has shown signs of wear and tear with recent misfires like “Eternals,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels.” Though post-pandemic installments such as “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness” ($956 million), 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” ($859 million) and 2023’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($846 million) neared the $1 billion mark,...

Anthony Bourdain is getting the biopic treatment.
“The Holdovers” breakout Dominic Sessa is in talks to portray the celebrity chef and travel documentarian in “Tony,” a film from production company Star Thrower Entertainment. A24 are said to be in talks with “BlackBerry” director and co-writer Matt Johnson to helm the project.
The film’s script is written by Lou Howe and Todd Bartels. A24 is in talks to produce with Trevor White and Tim White under their Star Thrower banner, along with Johnson and Matthew Miller. Emily Rose will executive produce.
Sessa, who was named one of Variety‘s 10 Actors to Watch in 2023, is next set to appear in “Now You See Me 3” alongside fellow franchise newcomers Ariana Greenblatt and Justice Smith. Other upcoming projects include Michael Showalter’s Christmas comedy “Oh. What. Fun.” and the Rose Byrne-starrer “Tow.”

The #1 movie of 2024 (“Inside Out 2”), as well as #3 (“Despicable Me 4”), and #7 (“Kung Fu Panda”) are animated features. The medium’s representations continue in streaming results, with Universal releasing “Despicable Me 4” on PVOD last week. An immediate #1 at both iTunes and Fandango, it remained at #5 in theaters last weekend. It added another $8 million for a $330 million totall as usual, marketing for home viewing might have boosted its box office.
And somehow, Sony’s 2017 “The Emoji Movie” is now a hit. It grossed $217 million worldwide amidst blistering reviews; it debuted on Netflix this weekend and jumped to #1. It reinforces the notion that animation is foolproof as long as it seems fresh.
It is one of four animated titles on Netflix’s list, which includes one Netflix original, as well as “Trolls Band Together” and “The Lorax” from Universal. However, the eight-month run of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” may be over.

One of the co-creators of the "Borderlands" franchise has weighed in on the failure of the recently-released movie based on the series of beloved video games. The response is certainly a little bit surprising, leaving much to discuss. Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox Software, the developer behind the games, took to Twitter over the weekend after director Eli Roth's film was met with universally terrible reviews en route to bombing at the box office. Pitchford indirectly shared his thoughts on the matter, in a way.
So what you're saying is: You like what my friends and I do with our Borderlands video games even more than you like what some of the biggest and best cast and crew of film makers on the planet have done. I'm super flattered! We're working extra hard four you on what's next....

“The best is yet to come,” Richard Williams said as he accepted a Special Achievement Award for his work on “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” during the 1988 Academy Awards. In retrospect, the Canadian animator was referring to “The Thief and the Cobbler,” a film he had been working on for close to 30 years and would continue to work on for many more to come.
“The Thief and the Cobbler” began as an adaptation of Afghan writer Idries Shah’s “The Exploits of the Incomparable Mullah Nasrudin.” When agreements between Williams and the Shah family fell through, the former reinvented the production by coming up with an original, Middle East-themed story. The folkloric hero was replaced by a nameless thief, as well as a cobbler named Tack. Both characters would be mute, relying on physical comedy in the spirit of Charlie Chaplin and other silent movie stars, while the film’s cartoony...

Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler’s “50 First Dates” is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and the former dropped a surprise revelation on her eponymous daytime talk show by sharing the original ending to the 2004 romantic-comedy classic. The film was not supposed to end in with a definitive happily ever after for main characters Henry (Sandler) and Lucy (Barrymore).
“Something that always sticks in my mind is the original ending of ’50 First Kisses,’ as it was called at the time,” Barrymore said. “Yeah, it was a drama set in Seattle. The original ending was her saying, ‘You should go and live your life, because this is no life here. And he goes away, as he does, and he comes back and he walks into the restaurant and he just sits down and says, ‘Hi, I’m Henry.’ And the film ends.”

The Walt Disney Company umbrella is so massive, and encompasses so many characters and franchises, that the definition of a "Disney fan" feels impossible to pin down these days. As I sat in the Honda Arena during this year's D23 fan convention in Anaheim, California, I wondered about the make-up of the audience. How many of them were Marvel folks? How many of them worshipped at the altar of Star Wars? Did some of them still pledge allegiance to good ol' fashioned Disney Animation, with a comparable appreciation for Pixar? And naturally, were there some folks who just loved all of the above?
I consider myself a pretty big fan of many of the characters and worlds that live within the Disney bubble, but I'm also perfectly capable of brushing off the stuff that just isn't for me. So as the evening's two-hour Disney Experiences Showcase panel entered its third hour,...

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “It Ends with Us.”]
Much has been said of the tense dynamic between “It Ends with Us” star Blake Lively and director and co-star Justin Baldoni. Making a film surrounding domestic abuse could theoretically strain the relationship between a cast and crew, but in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Baldoni spoke about the collaborative spirit he worked to foster on set. He claimed that from the start of the journey, working with screenwriter Christy Hall to adapt Colleen Hoover’s bestseller, his intentions were only ever focused on protecting the characters being explored, particularly Lively’s character, Lily Bloom.
As previously explained by IndieWire, in the book version of “It Ends with Us,” main character Lily is quick to acknowledge that each act of violence against her by husband Ryle is abuse. But in the film, these actions are less definitive, being treated more like accidents or mishaps than intentional.

James Gunn wrapped filming on “Superman” at the end of July, but there’s still plenty of work to be done on the 2025 comic book tentpole. Responding to fans on Threads, the writer-director said he’s not nearly finished with the movie that will kick start his new DC Universe.
“Heck no. Once you’re done shooting you’ve only just begun!” Gunn wrote in a message on Threads. “Still lots of editing, VFX, sound, and scoring to be done!”
When one follower suggested there will also be a significant time spent on reshoots, which have become something of a staple on big Hollywood tentpoles, Gunn replied with a surprising revelation: “I don’t know. I’ve done a total of one day of reshoots on my past two films combined.”

Kathryn Hahn has always been more than happy to take on a supporting role. Her comedic career blossomed in the early 2000s with bit parts in Adam McKay films like “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” and “Step Brothers,” and she also garnered dramatic bonafides with Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road” and M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Visit.” Most recently, she’s helped fill out ensembles in live-action projects like “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and animated ones such as “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” As her career has developed in the last decade, so too has her center-stage appeal, with roles in HBO’s “Mrs. Fletcher” and Tamara Jenkins’ “Private Life” placing her in lead position. Now, it seems, Marvel is taking notice as they’ve decided to spin her side character from “WandaVision” off into her own Disney+ show with “Agatha All Along.”

Ángel Salazar, who played Chi Chi in “Scarface,” died Aug. 11, his representative Roger Paul confirmed to Variety. He was 68.
Salazar played Tony Montana’s (Al Pacino) henchman in the 1983 cult classic, where he joins the drug lord in trying to reach the pinnacle of Miami’s cocaine scene. Chi Chi saves Tony in the famous chainsaw scene, where he’s almost killed by rival gang leader Hector (Al Israel).
Toward the end of the film, Chi Chi tries to fend off foe Alejandro Sosa’s (Paul Shenar) hit men to protect Tony, using a submachine gun to hold them back. Once he runs out of ammo, he bangs on Tony’s office door, begging to be let in before he’s killed by the attackers. He’s the last of Tony’s crew to be killed, leaving the kingpin all alone.

Two years later, "Obi-Wan Kenobi" feels like a strange entry in the larger Disney/Lucasfilm TV library. It's a show with some very cool moments (like Obi-Wan facing off against Darth Vader) and an incredibly satisfying Leia storyline, but it also meanders quite a bit and has some poor visuals. Well, at least George Lucas seemed to love it.
Part of what makes the show kind of disjointed is that it very much feels like a movie stretched out to be a TV show, with certain ideas scaled down to fit a TV budget and scope, and others stretched to encompass multiple hours of storytelling. After "The Mandalorian" season 2 started the trend, "Kenobi" also cemented the TV arm of Lucasfilm as being driven by cameos. Yet, despite many references and Glup Shitto appearances, we never got the one cameo that would have genuinely mattered to this story: Commander Cody.

If you are unaware that there is a quarterback named Jordan Love on the Green Bay Packers and another named Jalen Hurts on the Philadelphia Eagles, and that together their surnames comprise the title of (and the choral lyrics from) the 1976 power ballad version of “Love Hurts” by Nazareth, and that the two QBs will face each other on Friday, September 6 in a São Paulo, Brazil-based Week 1 NFL game exclusively on Peacock, you must not have streamed much of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.
If you did, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. And you would be equally well-aware that NBA all-time great (and now gold-medalist!) Stephen Curry stars in new Peacock sitcom “Mr. Throwback” opposite Adam Pally.

M. Night Shyamalan participated in a career retrospective interview with GQ magazine to mark the release of his latest directorial effort, “Trap,” and remembered studio executives not wanting to market 2000’s “Unbreakable” as a comic book movie. How the times have changed. Shyamalan and star Bruce Willis were coming off the enormous success of “The Sixth Sense,” which earned $672 million worldwide and picked up six Oscar nominations, including best picture. Shyamalan remembered the studio wanting to market “Unbreakable” like a horror-thriller even though it was a superhero movie.
“If you deny what it is because you’re afraid of it being different, then you’re stealing all of its strength,” Shyamalan said. “They were like, ‘We had one of the biggest movies of all time and the same two people are making another movie. Let’s make it look like that movie.’ As opposed to what it was, which was...

James Cameron has no time to defend the 4K transfers of his films like “Aliens” and “True Lies.”
The auteur told The Hollywood Reporter that fans who criticize the quality of restorations should “get a life.” Cameron seems to be echoing the sentiment that Ridley Scott doled out for the historical accuracy of his own features like “Napoleon.” Basically, let the directors direct, the restorers restore, and be content as cinephiles, according to Cameron.
“When people start reviewing your grain structure, they need to move out of mom’s basement and meet somebody. Right? I’m serious,” Cameron said. “I mean, are you fucking kidding me? I’ve got a great team that does the transfers. I do all the color and density work. I look at every shot, every frame, and then the final transfer is done by a guy who has been with me [for years]. All the ‘Avatar’ films are done that way.

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
While there was not really anyone, not even Netflix, that anticipated just how huge “Baby Reindeer” would become, its Emmy-nominated creator and star Richard Gadd told IndieWire over Zoom, “I always believed in it. I thought it was a hit when I was working on it.”
Speaking more on the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series nominee that explores his real life experience with stalking and sexual assault, the Scottish comedian said, “In a television process where there’s a lot of voices and a lot of questions being asked and a lot of feedback being given, I think it’s very easy to get disillusioned sometimes. What happens when the most improvisation-heavy superhero studio around meets the Merc with a Mouth, the most chaotic superhero of them all? By the looks of things, you get an ambitious production like "Deadpool & Wolverine" where, at some point, it seems as if anything and everything was probably on the table. The final version of the team-up movie we ended up with is practically bursting with cameos and Easter eggs. Chris Evans' reappearance as Johnny Storm would've been a massive coup all on its own, but director Shawn Levy and star/co-writer Ryan Reynolds went the extra mile to recruit even more blockbuster castoffs, including the likes of Jennifer Garner's Elektra, Channing Tatum's Gambit, and, of course, Wesley Snipes' unfailingly badass Blade.
Yet that hardly even scratches the surface of all the concepts tossed around for what "Deadpool & Wolverine" could've potentially been. Even on a standard Marvel Cinematic Universe movie,...

Can you imagine banning something as inoffensive as Marvel's "Eternals?" What about "West Side Story?" Or "Lightyear." Well, when you're a hereditarily ruled emirate that locks people up for consensual gay relationships, you're probably going to be a bit strict about what you let people watch.
Qatar is one of those countries that often makes headlines for banning this or that perfectly innocuous movie. It's not just the aforementioned Hollywood products that fell afoul of the country's censorship committee, either. Dozens of films have been either banned or threatened with heavy edits by the country that criminalizes unmarried women and men living together. Just last year "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" and, perhaps unsurprisingly, "Barbie," were outlawed in the emirate. Now, Blake Lively has managed to upset the committee with her new movie "It Ends With Us."

Good editing, like a good joke, is all about rhythm. It guides you through a story with a sense of build-up and payoff, sometimes almost invisibly and sometimes in such a way that seeing the structure is part of what makes it so funny. Editor Joanna Naugle can speak to both modes, having edited all kinds of series — and comedy specials, too; she happens to be Emmy nominated this year for both her work on “The Bear” and on Ramy Youssef’s comedy special “More Feelings.”
Those two very different hours of streaming TV are a strange but very fun back-to-back watch; you can start to sense Naugle’s sensibility and her sympathy for her protagonists at work. It helps that “More Feelings” was also directed by “The Bear” showrunner Christopher Storer and shot by “The Bear” Dp Andrew Wehde; meanwhile, Youssef directed Episode 4 of Season 2, “Honeydew,” which Naugle co-edited with Adam Epstein.

Vince Vaughn was aware that “Swingers” was totally money, but even then, the script for the sequel got thwarted.
Vaughn told Variety that “Swingers 2” was a possibility, with screenwriter/co-star Jon Favreau even penning a screenplay for a follow-up. However, both Vaughn and Favreau opted to not move forward after “Swingers” became a cult hit in 1996.
“I was always of the mindset of go make something new. But there was a script even for ‘Swingers 2’ that Jon wrote that was really fun, but we didn’t feel like it was the right thing to do,” the “Bad Monkey” actor said. “Obviously when you have a commercial hit, there’s always a race to get the sequel out as soon as possible, but I always felt like it had to have its own story. So, there were talks at different times.”

In his follow-up to “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind,” Chiwetel Ejiofor makes noticeable improvements as a filmmaker through a real-life story that, while often unfocused, features piercing moments of dramatic and political engagement. Based on a biography by Jeff Hobbs, “Rob Peace” follows a gifted young Black student from his childhood all the way through Yale, as he deals with economic downturn and trying to free his wrongfully convicted father. To navigate his financial and legal troubles, Rob uses his intellect for stealthy drug dealing, though his ambitions are far bigger and more community-centric.
Voiceover from Rob (Jay Will) adequately paints his proclivity for math and science when the film begins, flashing back to his childhood in the 1980s. These occasional narrations fill the gaps in Ejiofor’s storytelling, detailing Rob’s interests, goals, and curiosities far more than the character’s actions ever seem to. Such is the...

Kit Harington is admitting that the final season of “Game of Thrones” made some “mistakes” when it came to the storyline.
The actor told GQ UK that some swings “didn’t quite work” for the plot. There was viral fan backlash to the controversial series finale that saw fan favorites like Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys die, while other beloved characters such as Harington’s Jon Snow were met with lackluster fates. The series ran for eight seasons, from 2011 and 2019.
“I think if there was any fault with the end of ‘Thrones,’ is that we were all so fucking tired, we couldn’t have gone on longer,” Harington said. “And so I understand some people thought it was rushed, and I might agree with them. But I’m not sure there was any alternative. I look at pictures of me in that final season, and I look exhausted. I look spent.

When you talk about the ‘Terminator’ franchise, you can’t help but talk about James Cameron. With his first two ‘Terminator’ films, he revolutionized the action film genre. It goes without saying that all ‘Terminator’ projects are compared directly to those films, which is why many of the sequels and spinoffs just don’t cut it. They all pale in comparison. So, when you hear that Cameron is working on a new ‘Terminator’ project, you can’t help but get a little excited.

We all share a common goal: to make the entries in James Cameron's "Avatar" franchise the biggest box office hits ever released, despite naysayers who think these movies have no "cultural impact."
While we wait for the next film to arrive and remind us of our collective love for alien worlds and space whales, we at last know the title of the third chapter in the saga, and no, it's not "The Seed Bearer," so pour one out for the "Avatar" title that never was. Instead, during this year's D23 convention, James Cameron took the stage to delight Pandora aficionados with new details about the third film, officially titled "Avatar: Fire and Ash." Cameron's presentation mostly included concept art showing the main things we can expect from the new "Avatar." Brazilian actors Alice Braga (“Queen of the South”) and Bianca Comparato (“3%”) have joined forces to launch South, a new production label based out of Los Angeles, New York and São Paulo. The company was established with financial support from Flagcx, the largest independent creative services holding company in Latin America.
South will debut its first feature project, Gabriela Amaral Almeida’s body-horror story “She, Crocodile,” at this year’s 12th edition of the San Sebastian Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, which will take place from Sept. 25 -27.
Described by the producers as a “horror fable,” “She, Crocodile” is the story of a young woman, the sole heiress to a luxury real estate brokerage in Rio de Janeiro, who slowly transforms into one of the titular reptiles. As a project, it received backing from the MacDowell Institute Residency program where Amaral wrote a full-50 page treatment.

It’s been a number of years since HBO’s “Game of Thrones” aired its much-maligned final season. But considering that show is one of the most popular of the past two decades, people still want to talk about it. This means Kit Harington is going to have to talk about the final season at some point. Well, that point is now.
Speaking to GQ, while promoting his role in the HBO show “Industry,” Kit Harington finally opened up about the controversial final season of “Game of Thrones.” That is to say, he fessed up to the fact that it was a bit lackluster.

The original Universal Monster movies might go down as some of the most influential classics that, unfortunately, many young movie fans have simply never watched. Artists as acclaimed as Guillermo del Toro and Edgar Wright have spoken at length about how much of an impact these black-and-white classics had on them from a young age. No matter how much time passes, this franchise has remained squarely at the forefront of pop culture -- not always for the better, as the ill-conceived "Dark Universe" can attest to -- with a steady stream of rereleases and modern remakes. This latest development, however, might be the most exciting one in years.

The first film directed by Chuck Russell I can remember seeing was the special effects-driven Jim Carrey vehicle The Mask at a multiplex with my family thirty years ago. However, it was his work in the horror genre with co-writer Frank Darabont that really hooked me. Both 1987’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors—released when the filmmaker was only 28—and 1988’s remake of The Blob were gooey and gory, yes, but also competent adventure films, their charm derived from Russell’s nimble craftsmanship and the […]

In medieval Europe, whole communities came together at public executions, drinking and dancing and collectively purging their sins through ceremonial bloodshed. In early 21st-century America, smaller groups gathered at multiplexes for a similar rite: Exorcizing national guilt by watching graphic torture scenes in horror movies. The latter was, of course, sanitized — the actors in these films were only pretending to be in pain, and the audience was distanced from the action by the invisible wall of a movie screen. But the psychological processes at play weren’t so different.
So-called “torture porn” — a term everyone but the critic who coined it, David Edelstein, seems to hate — developed in the 2000s alongside parallel waves of ultraviolent nihilism in French, Japanese, and South Korean cinema, not to mention the neo-grindhouse revival. But there are a...

Bolivian filmmaker Martin Boulocq’s drama in development, “The Strange Woman” (“La Mujer Extraña”), which participates in the upcoming San Sebastian Film Festival Co-Production Forum, has tapped Uruguay’s Cimarrón Cine, part of the Mediapro Studio since 2023, as a co-production partner.
This would be the second time it has backed a Boulocq film. In 2022, it co-produced Tribeca Best Screenplay-winner “The Visitor” (“El Visitante”) about an ex-convict who returns home in a bid to restart his life and reconnect with his young daughter.
Among the leading production companies in Uruguay, Cimarrón has provided production services to Oscar-nominated “Society of the Snow” and co-produced Prime Video’s lauded series, “Iosi, the Regretful Spy,” alongside Oficina Burman, among others.
Lead produced by Boulocq and Andrea Camponovo’s Cq Films, “The Strange Woman” is set in a future Bolivia torn apart by the war over lithium, a vital component in EVs and smartphones, where...

Will Packer does not make films for Hollywood. Though his career has spanned 30 years, and his movies have collectively grossed over $1 billion at the box office, the prolific producer learned this powerful lesson early on.
“When I made that very first movie, ‘Chocolate City,’ I invited all of Hollywood to come to our world premiere,” he told Variety during a sit-down conversation at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (Mvaaff), where the series premiered. “This is how audacious we were: I did a black-tie premiere in Tallahassee, Florida, on the campus of Florida A&m University (Famu) in the Lee Hall Student Auditorium.”
He adds, “We invited all the Hollywood executives, and none of them showed up, but all the students showed up, and it was packed. It was standing room only. It taught me something about the audience for which I’m making these films. I wasn’t...

Ecuadorian documentary “The Beach of the Enchaquirados” has been picked up by The Hague-based Latin Quarter, a sales, co-production and distribution outfit dedicated to Latin American, Spanish and Latinx diaspora cinema.
Originally released in 2021, the film has found a second life thanks to a pair of Open Doors Screenings at this year’s Locarno Film Festival. During its initial festival run, “The Beach of the Enchaquirados” screened at high-profile international festivals, including IDFA, Guadalajara and Doclisboa, winning the Arquipélago Contemporary Art Center Award at the latter.
A logline for the documentary reads: “Vicky is a fisherman by day and bar owner at night. When she was a little boy her dream was to be a radio soap opera star; nowadays, she dreams of falling in love again. How is it possible that a small, barren place in the third world has managed to achieve this special form of freedom and tolerance?...

Will horror B-movie audiences finally get the remake they’ve been waiting on for decades? Universal is again looking to remake the 1954 monster movie “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” and this time they’re looking to the “Aquaman” director James Wan — someone who knows a thing or two about underwater battles and gill-men — to develop his own modern take, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
Wan may direct too and is in early talks to tack on that responsibility. If he does, it would be his first project behind the director’s chair since merging his production company Atomic Monster with Blumhouse Productions.
Wan’s take, according to the individual, will be a grounded, modernized retelling, leaning into “visceral horror,” but it will still pay respect to the original. No screenwriter or talent is attached just yet. Atomic Monster will produce the film, with Wan as a producer.

The character of Transporter Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) first appeared in "Encounter at Farpoint," the pilot episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." For many episodes, he was basically a background character, usually present to deliver a line or two of techno-jargon and to beam the senior staff from the ship to a planet and back. With each appearance, though, audiences began to get more details about O'Brien's life. He used to build ships in bottles as a boy, for instance. O'Brien would marry and have a child. All told, O'Brien appeared in 52 episodes of the show, sometimes starring in his own stories.
The character became popular enough to be carried over to "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" in 1993, on which he was a regular character. On "Deep Space Nine," O'Brien became even more awesome, serving as the chief engineer on the station, having to familiarize himself with dated Cardassian technology,...

Justin Theroux is crediting Tim Burton for, well, continuing his Tim Burton auteurism without letting studios interfere.
Theroux, who stars in long-awaited sequel film “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” told Total Film that the feature was “not made by taking polls from audiences and studio notes.” Simply put, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” was not made by committee.
“This movie takes some very big swings,” Theroux said, while comparing the viewing experience to watching Willy Wonka’s psychedelic boat ride in 1971’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
“There’s the phantasmagoria and it feels slightly out of control and unhinged. It has that vibe to it,” Theroux continued of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which will open the Venice Film Festival. “It’s clear this movie was not made by taking polls from audiences, and studio notes, and executives going, ‘Well, what’s the most satisfying act three?’ This is 100 percent like someone opening the front of Tim Burton’s head,...

Soo Hugh, creator of the Apple TV+ hit “Pachinko,” will turn her attention to the last gasps of the Jazz Age.
Searchlight Pictures has enlisted Hugh to write and direct “Tender Is the Night,” F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1934 novel about married ex-pats, Nick and Nicole Diver, who are living on the French Riviera when they meet a young actress while on holiday. It was the novelist’s fourth and final completed work, and it has many of Fitzgerald’s trademarks — romantic entanglements, wealth, alcoholism and mental instability. Over the years, the book has been adapted into a stage play, a TV miniseries, a ballet and a 1962 movie with Jason Robards and Jennifer Jones.
Hugh will produce the Searchlight feature film along with LuckyChap, Putnam Pictures and Margo Klewans’ Moonslinger Productions. Vice president Richard Ruiz will be overseeing the project for Searchlight Pictures, reporting to heads of production and development Katie Goodson-Thomas and DanTram Nguyen.

James Wan just can’t get enough of people living in the water, huh? Just as he has stepped away from the “Aquaman” franchise, it appears the horror filmmaker is ready to take a stab at “Creature from the Black Lagoon.”
According to THR, James Wan has signed on to develop a new feature film take on “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” with an eye towards directing the film himself.

Osgood Perkins is riding high after the box office success of "Longlegs," the hit horror movie that featured Nicolas Cage going bonkers as a Satanic serial killer. "Longlegs" was Perkins' biggest hit, and now he's following it up with his biggest movie so far, at least in terms of budget. That film is "The Monkey," based on the Stephen King short story of the same name. Now, when I say this is Perkins' "biggest" movie in regards to budget, I don't want you to think the filmmaker is working with hundreds of millions of bucks. According a profile in Vulture, "The Monkey" was made "with a budget in the $10–$11 million range," which is pretty high for Perkins, a horror filmmaker who has solely made lower-budgeted indie fare so far. "The Monkey" is also coming from Neon, who distributed "Longlegs."

Marvel Studios can't help but make things complicated when it comes to Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The latest development will see the beloved actor once again don the armor after having left the MCU behind with 2019's "Avengers: Endgame." But this return isn't quite what most fans were expecting.
Those fans have been on a bit of a roller coaster in the last few years. First, they were heartbroken to see the character that helped establish the MCU and change Hollywood forever, Iron Man, perish at the end of "Endgame." Then, they were even more dismayed to see what happened to that shared universe in the post-Tony Stark age, as Marvel began to pump out a mediocre run of streaming shows and movies. So excessive was this cavalcade of unremarkable MCU "content" that it nearly spelled the end for what had previously been...

You know the old saying: Couples who star in two extremely hyped-up movies at roughly the same time together (despite technically being rivals at the box office) tend to stay together. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have always been one of the internet's favorite celebrity pairings and, this past week, the dream team's romance has found itself in the spotlight like never before -- and that's not even factoring in Lively's own cameo as, spoiler alert, the voice of Lady Deadpool. The overlapping releases between Reynolds' "Deadpool & Wolverine" and Lively's "It Ends With Us" played out like a rising tide raising both ships, buoyed by their respective audiences turning out in droves and pitting both films against one another in a battle for that prized #1 spot.
But that competition only exists in the minds of financial experts, film journalists, and internet stans who are way too invested in their pop-culture idols.

The SAG-AFTRA Foundation has announced the official opening of the Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists.
The 15,000 square-foot facility is located on the 10th floor of the Union’s headquarters on Wilshire Boulevard and is named in honor of Streep, the most philanthropic donor in the Foundation’s nearly 40-year history. The state-of-the-art facility is a hub designed to help SAG-AFTRA artists fine-tune their skills and advance their careers.
Courtney B. Vance, president and chairman of the board of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, shared his thoughts on the opening: “Meryl Streep’s quiet and consistent support for the Foundation and her fellow actors for decades has been nothing short of extraordinary. In recent years when serious crises struck our community, Meryl stepped up immediately to help lift up performers who needed it most.”
He added, “Naming our new Center in her honor is our way of expressing gratitude for her unwavering commitment and generosity,...

As the star of everything from “Swingers” to “Brawl in Cell Block 99,” “Wedding Crashers” to “Freaky,” Vince Vaughn has made an impression on moviegoers that looms even larger than his 6’5” frame. Be it comedy or horror, on the big screen or small, his performances often feel oversized but always exude a lived-in authenticity, which is why so many of them have endured as stand-outs and staples of the genres he’s explored. And yet, when facing an honor commensurate with his impact on the entertainment industry, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Vaughn reacts a bit more like a shrinking violet than you might expect.
“I get shy somewhat with these things,” Vaughn tells Variety. “I was fortunate years ago to be included in a Mann’s Chinese [handprint ceremony] and that was out of nowhere — and very nice as well. But it’s definitely something that is nice...
