Former President Donald Trump had blood on his face and was rushed to a hospital by the U.S. Secret Service following an assassination attempt during a Saturday campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

A bullet grazed Trump’s ear and officials said the former president was safe in the minutes following the shooting. He later posted to social media that he was recovering and grateful for first responders.

The suspected shooter was killed at the scene, one rally attendee was deceased, and two other attendees were rushed to the hospital following the incident.

A nation closely following the 2024 presidential election — including Mississippi’s elected officials and other prominent public figures — responded to the news on Saturday evening.

State Rep. Robert Johnson of Natchez, the Democratic leader of the Mississippi House: “We need to find a way to become less strident, less divisive. This kind of atmosphere is not good for our country.”

State Sen. Derrick Simmons of Greenville, the Democratic leader of the Mississippi Senate: “MLK said, ‘Hate begets hate; violence begets violence…In fact violence merely increases hate.’ I pray for a speedy recovery for those affected by the recent violence at this rally. Violence of any kind has no place in America. As a nation, we must come together in love and truth.”
