UFC 262 play-by-play and live results

HOUSTON – MMA Junkie was on scene and reporting live from Saturday’s UFC 262 event.

UFC 262 took place at Toyota Center in Houston. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

In the main event, Charles Oliveira (31-8 MMA, 19-8 UFC) took on former Bellator champion Michael Chandler (22-6 MMA, 1-1 UFC) for the vacant lightweight title. In the co-feature, Beneil Dariush (21-4-1 MMA, 15-4-1 UFC) met former interim lightweight champ Tony Ferguson (25-6 MMA, 15-4 UFC).

Christos Giagos vs. Sean Soriano

Round 1 – Soriano out quickly to engage. No touch of gloves. Giagos shifts laterally on the outside. Giagos scores first with a right hand that sends an off-balance Giagos stumbling, but he recovers quickly. Giagos changes levels and drives forward, pushing the action to the cage. Soriano sprawls, but Giagos is able to slip around to the back. Soriano breaks the grip and turns inside before escaping and resetting. They engage again, and it’s Giagos who lands a crisp right hand. Soriano misses a big right and eats a counter left. He swings back and scores with a big right that stuns Giagos. Soriano starting to find a rhythm. Soriano complains of an eyepoke, and referee Jeff Rexroad didn’t seem to see it but does step in and call time. Soriano OK, and we get back to work. Soriano lands another big right hand. He kicks the lead leg. Giagos shoots, but Soriano sprawls perfectly and backs away. They trade punches, and both men land. Giagos has some damage under his left eye. One minute left. More punches traded. Nice back-and-forth action. Soriano blocks a high kick and lands a nice left hand. He slips on a high kick but jumps back to his feet. Giagos changes levels at the end and scores a nice takedown in the final seconds. Good action, and MMA Junkie leans toward Soriano, 10-9.

Round 2 – Giagos looking to pressure early. He dives for a takedown. Soriano counters with a perfect whizzer, but Giagos’s second effort seems him take tpip position. Soriano scrambles to sweep, but Giagos traps the neck and rolls over to the top with the D’Arce. Pressure on Soriano’s neck is evident, but he doesn’t want to tap. Giagos keeps the squeeze, and Soriano is out.

Kevin Aguilar vs. Tucker Lutz

Round 1 – Lutz with an early low kick, and Aguilar swings back over the top. Aguilar trying to press with punches. Lutz moving well to start. Lutz with a left hand. Aguilar grabs hold of the body but can’t do anything with it. Lutz with a high kick that’s blocked. Lutz continues to be aggressive with punches. He lands a left hand, but Lutz still evading well. Aguilar blocks another high kick but then eats a left hand in the following exchange. Lutz continues to throw high kicks that are blocked, but he follows with punches quickly after. Lutz’s left hand scores again. Aguilar not afraid to engage, but Lutz getting the best of the exchanges to start. Lutz drops down and drives through for the takedown with relative ease. Aguilar able to pull guard, but Lutz scoots him to the fence and the head is trapped against the cage. Aguilar tries to get the feet on the hips and create some room. He does sit up and get his back to the cage, but the round ends. MMA Junkie gives the first to Lutz, 10-9.

Round 2 – Aguilar ups the aggression, but he immediately walks into two big left hands. Punches traded, but again it’s Lutz who gets the best of it. He’s just landing a little cleaner and avoiding a little better. Aguilar not hesitant to engage. He changes levels and looks for the takedown, but Lutz defends well against the fence. Aguilar keeps the pressure heavy from the outside. Lutz eventually able to spin off the fence and pull back to the center. Low kick from Lutz, but Aguilar delivers a right hand in reply. Aguilar starting to find a little rhythm now, but Lutz is countering well. Strikes traded. Aguilar’s nose busted up a bit. Lutz changes levels and drives through for the takedown. Not a lot there as he tries to advance, so he moves back to the feet. They continue to trade punches. Lutz with a low kick, as well. They move into the clinch. Better round for Aguilar, but MMA Junkie leans toward Lutz again, 10-9.

Round 3 – Aguilar trying to get things going. He comes out aggressive. Lutz thinks takedown, but Aguilar back away. Aguilar chasing with punches. Lutz countering well and lands a big uppercut. Left hand scores. Aguilar is hurt, but he’s not going away. He lands a big right hand. Crowd roars at the attack. Aguilar trying to gain momentum. Unfortunately for him, he’s taking some damage when he gives it. Lutz changes levels again and drives through for the takedown with three minutes left. Aguilar able to work up to a seated position. Lutz drags him bak down to the canvas. Aguilar able to create a little space, and they work back to the feet. Aguilar rushing forward. Lutz wants a single, but Aguilar defends and backs away. Lutz wants the takedown, but Aguilar defending well. They back away and reset. Punches traded. Lutz lands a nice left. Aguilar with a right hand. Aguilar throwing haymakers to the end. Fun fight, and respect show at the end. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Aguilar, 10-9, but awards the fight to Lutz, 29-28.

Priscila Cachoeira vs. Gina Mazany

Round 1 – Mazany moving laterally on the outside and kicks at the leg. She pushes forward with punches and lands a left hand. Punches exchanged, and Mazany moves inside and wants the takedown. She doesn’t get it on first effort, but she sticks with it and drags the action to the canvas. Cachoeira scoots up to a knee and then stands, but Mazany stays tight with her and drags the action back to the cage. Half-guard for Cachoeira. Her head is against the cage. Mazany keeping the pressure on from the top. Cachoeira gets to a seated position, but Mazany has the body wrapped. She delivers a few right hands, but Cachoeira is able to stand and turn off the fence. They trade punches in the pocket, but Mazany changes levels and drives through for an easy takedown in the center of the cage. Half-guard agin for Cachoeira. Mazany rides the position until the end. MMA Junkie gives it to Mazany, 10-9.

Round 2 – Cachoeira walking forward and wants to strike. Mazany dives under a right hand and takes her to the floor almost immediately. Cachoeira in half-guard, and Mazany heavy with shoulder pressure. Cachoeira tries to isolate the arm, but Mazany able to spin around to the back. She gets in the hooks and wants the choke, but Cachoeira alertly turns to get her back to the canvas. Cachoeira trying to escape, but Mazany able to work back to top position. She keeps her shoulder pressure high, but there’s not a lot of action, and referee Mike Beltran calls for a restart. Mazany has blood streaming down from her left eye. She wants the takedown on the restart, but Cachoeira stuffs it. Cachoeira land a nice right hand. Mazany starting to fade a bit. Cachoeira taking advantage on the feet. Big right hands scoring. Mazany trying to swing back, but she is exhausted. She’s struggling to stay up. Cachoeira teeing off on the feet. Mazany trying to survive and move and cover, but she’s spent. Time winding down, and Cachoeira keeps lasting away, and Beltran steps in to wave off the fight.

Andrea Lee vs. Antonina Shevchenko

Round 1 – Lee misses an early low kick and then goes high. She kicks the leg again and slips the punches that come in reply. Shevchenko loading up on her punches, but Lee moving well to start. Lee the aggressor in many exchanges early. She’s mixing up her levels, as well. Lee wraps the body and pushes the action to the cage. Shevchenko able to slip away and back to the center. Shevchenko grabs the Thai clinch. Punches and knees traded inside. Lee’s left arm is trapped in there, as well, and Shevchenko applying pressure and attacking that side. Lee finally pulls it out. Punches traded. Lee lands a high kick over a spinning backfist. Left hand scores clean for Lee, and Shevchenko buckles a bit. Lee moves forward and into a clinch and takes the fight to the floor. Shevchenko in guard. Lee postures a bit and lands punches. Lee finishes the round on top, and MMA Junkie gives her the round, 10-9.

Round 2 – Shevchenko lookin g to strike. Spinning backfist from Lee misses, ut she uses it to score with a head-and-arm throw. Scramble on the ground, but Lee gets to the top. She steps over into a crucifix then switches to a triangle and rolls to her back. Shevchenko stuck in the hold. Lee fires in a few elbows from her back. Shevchenko keeping her right arm tucked next to her head, and she’s surviving. Lee trying to adjust the angle on triangle. She just can’t get the squeeze. Lee trying to get the arm, but she can’t get the pressure she needs. Lee scores with a few elbows. Shevchenko can’t pull free, but Lee can’t get her tap. Time winding down. One minute left. Lee turns and wants the squeeze. She’s trying to add pressure on the left arm that’s not in the triangle. Lee finally gets control of the right arm and tucks it under her armpit, and Shevchenko has to tap. Lot of heart there, but Lee finally got it done.

Jamie Pickett vs. Jordan Wright

Round 1 – Wright pulls back an early spinning attack and then misses a big right hand. Pickett with a quick kick to the body and then drives inside for a takedown. Wright sprawls well and starts drilling him with elbows. Pickett trying to cover up, but Wright is just unleashing a barrage of punches. Pickett trying to get his head tucked, but he’s taking damage. Relentless swarm fo strikes. Pickett pulls away, but Wright stays home. Knee from the clinch sends him to the floor. Wright keeps punching away as Wright turtles, and this fight is over. Wow.

Mike Grundy vs. Lando Vannata

Round 1 – Grundy rushes forward, but Vannata slips away and fires a few strikes to keep him honest. Grundy faking level changes as Vannata studies his movement. Grundy rushes forward for the takedown, and Vannata defends well. A Grundy knee lands to the groin, and Vannata takes a quick break. Quick action on the restart. Vannata quick with strikes. Grundy drives in on a low kick. He gets the takedown, but Vannata pops right back to the feet. Grundy still has the bodylock and returns him to the canvas, but Vannata pops right back up again and battles his way free. Grundy misses on another takedown. He ducks under a high kick and does get Vannata to the floor. Vannata immediately back to his feet. He turns inside and pulls free again. Vannata with a right hand. Vannata misses a spinning kick. Grundy sneaks in a left hand. Vannata high kick blocked. Grundy shots inside, but Vannata runs to the cage and spins inside and resets quite easily. Fight breaks out in the stands, taking everyone’s attention. Grundy shoots inside again but can’t get the takedown. Round ends, and MMA Junkie gives it to Vannata, 10-9.

Round 2 – Vannata switching stances and throw out the high kick. Right hand scores. Grundy shoots inside, but Vannata again defends it well and turns inside and pulls away. Vannata’s defense is sound. Vannata kicks at the lead leg. Grundy shoots inside but gets pushed away again. Vannata moving well and staying upright. Grundy going to have to strike with Vannata. He does land a right hand, but Vannata comes back with a flurry of punches. Vannata spins but doesn’t pull the trigger. He’s moving well and light on his feet. Grundy shoots but gets turned away again. Vannata high kick scores. He goes to the body, as well. Vannata feeling the groove right now. he kicks to the body. He kicks the leg, as well. Right hand. Grundy goes to the body. Round ends on the feet. Close one, but MMA Junkie gives it to Vannata, 10-9.

Round 3 – Vannata punching quickly to start and then perfectly defends another takedown. Grundy ducks into a knee but keeps pressing forward. He’s able to scramble a bit and grab the neck. No choke in play, but he doesn’t want to let go. He’s controlling from the front, but Vannata able to actually grab him and slam Grundy to the floor. Grundy lets go of the head, and Vannata moves back to the feet. Grundy lands another big right hand, but Vannata able to walk through it and fire back. Grundy shoots inside again but gets turned away. Vannata kicks the leg. He goes high, but it’s blocked. Grundy with the right hand. He tries to move inside but can’t get there. Vannata kicking to the body. Big left for Grundy. He’s finding the occasional shot but just not linking it all together. He dives from range, but once again he’s pushed away. Vannata very slick tonight. They exchange a bit at the end and show respect at the bell. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Vannata, and awards him the fight 30-27.

Andre Muniz vs. Ronaldo Souza

Round 1 – Jabs pawed out from both men. Muniz pulls back on a low kick. Souza kicks the lead leg. He rushes forward with punches. Muniz shifts and kicks the body. Lot of kicks early from both. Souza changes levels and drives in for the takedown. Muniz sprawls against the cage, but Souza lifts him and slams him to the canvas. Muniz gets his legs inside and kicks Souza away and resets to the feet. Souza blocks several punches on the feet. Muniz changes levels quickly and scores the takedown. Souza working from an open guard and scoots his way to the cage and stands. He has to battle in the clinch, but he finds some space and stands and moves away to reset. Muniz high kick blocked. He kicks low, as well. Muniz shoots inside for the takedown and gets it. Souza turns and stands. Muniz jumps the back but he’s very high. Souza tries to tripod. Muniz slipping off the back, but he turns to isolate the right the arm as he’s falling. Muniz torques the arm, and Souza refuses to tap, and the limb appears to snap. Vicious.

Edson Barboza vs. Shane Burgos

Round 1 – Barboza with a few early low kicks. Burgos pumping out the jab and lands a right, as well. They’re not wasting any time. Barboza back to the leg. Barboza keeping his hands high and blocking punches while staying on his opponent’s legs. Burgos with a left to the body. Burgos holding the center and looking to box, but Barboza is doing damage already to the lead leg. Burgos jab finding a home. Barboza’s right eye showing some damage already. They clinch briefly, and the crowd starts to chant “no takedowns!” Burgos gaining confidence now. He’s going to the body and tripling up the jab. Barboza answering back with punches, as well, but Burgos is landing more frequently. Spinning heel kick blocked by Burgos, and he smiles. Barboza counter right scores, and Burgos’ legs buckle a bit. Barboza going back to the leg kicks now. Big left from Burgos in the final seconds. Great round, and MMA Junkie leans slightly toward Barboza, 10-9.

Round 2 – Burgos asks for some love from the crowd, and they give it to him to start the round. Back to work quickly. Burgos lands a right and then a left, but Barboza goes to the leg. Spinning kick to the body scores. Burgos finding a home for his punches. Barboza to the body, and he’s marked it up. Barboza’s right shin is split open and bleeding. He’s still throwing it. He puts blood on Burgos’ lead leg. Burgos pressing and lands a right hand. Burgos with a left to the body. They’re trading in tight. Burgos jab still landing. Barboza spinning kick to the body. Carnage in there right now. Barboza lands two crisp punches and slips the reply. Each man having some success. Burgos pressing, but Barboza moving well as he picks his spots. Burgos’ left eye showing some wear. Another great round. MMA Junkie leans slightly toward Barboza, 10-9.

Round 3 – They waste no time engaging again. Blood still streaming down the right shin of Barboza. It marks up Burgos leg as soon as Barboza throws it. Punches traded. Barboza right hand lands. Burgos steps back. he staggers and falls to the floor. Bizarre sequence there. Barboza does his job and finishes it off with punches. Amazing fight.

Viviane Araujo vs. Katlyn Chookagian

Round 1 – Araujo with a right hand to start. She’s light on her feet and looking to work in and out of range. Chookagian flurrying her punches, looking to use her reach. Araujo scores with a crisp left. She’s moving well to start, managing the range perfectly. Right hand scores over the top. Chookagian engaging, but Araujo is just on point to start. Another left hand scores clean, as well as a right over the top for Araujo. Chookagian adding in kicks, as well. She’s throwing the front kick to keep her opponent away and digging to the legs, as well. Chookagian working the jab and starting to user her length a little better here late. Araujo’s punches seem to have the power edge. One minute left, and Araujo shoots inside and drives the action to the cage. Chookagian sneaks a knee up op and is digging her arms inside. Knees traded at the end. MMA Junkie gives it to Araujo, 10-9.

Round 2 – Chookagian out quickly and looking to strike. She throws a front kick that pushes Araujo to the floor. She rushes after her, but Araujo able to scramble up. Araujo back on the attack. Chookagian using a lot of volume in her strikes. Chookagian kicks, and Araujo is able to catch it and trip the action to the canvas. Chookagian trying to scramble, but Araujo gets to the top, and tries to set up the top-side guillotine. Not there, but it lets her punch to the body and then step over to mount. Chookagian able to recover to half-guard, but Araujo is heavy in her top control. Chookagian keeps working and finally gets her legs inside and creates some space. As they rise, Chookagian lands a knee and a few crisp punches. Araujo looks tired. She takes a few deep breaths. Chookagian picking up the volume. Araujo had damage under the right eye. She’s fading. Chookagian presses to the end. MMA Junkie gives the second to Chookagian, 10-9, despite some troubles on the ground.

Round 3 – Chookagian still moving well. Araujo loads up on a left that misses. Araujo still has power, but Chookagian is outworking her. Araujo does land a big left, but Chookagian just walks through it. Chookagian with non-stop combinations. She just misses a big knee up the middle. Chookagian kicks the leg but eats a counter. Chookagian showboating a bit as she moves. Araujo’s right eye closing up, but she’s pressing forward. Chookagian just relentless with her volume. Araujo’s jab is finding the mark. Araujo lands a right hand. Chookagian lands a high kick. It’s back-and-forth on the feet. Araujo changes levels but Chookagian stuffs it and knees her as they break apart. Chookagian maintaining volume all the way to the end. She kicks the leg, as well. Araujo’s left eye busted up now, as well. Chookagian pushing the pace until the end. Respect between them both at the end. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Chookagian, 10-9, and awards her the fight 29-28. Could honestly go either way.

Rogerio Bontorin vs. Matt Schnell

Round 1 – Schnell takes the center and throws out a few feints to get a read. Bontorin circling left. Both men patient to start. Schnell lands to the body. Bontorin answer with a low kick. Bontorin tries to close the distance, but Schnell swings away with a flurry and backs him up. Bontorin trying to push inside, but Schnell working well with his range. Bontorin scores with a big right. Another lands, but Schnell seems unfazed and throws back. Schnell seems quicker, but Bontorin has landed with some power. Punch up top from Bontorin. Schnell stumbles after a low kick but quickly recovers. Bombs traded in the pocket. Schnell scores with a quick flurry of punches. Low kick scores from Bontorin. Schnell with a jab. Back and forth, and they finish on the feet. Good round, and MMA Junkie leans toward Bontorin, 10-9.

Round 2 – Schnell out quickly with a high kick that’s blocked. They trade punches. Low kicks traded. Schnell continues to work the legs. He’s patient and sharp, but Bontorin is finding moments. The Brazilian lands a big left. Schnell seems very confident on his feet, but Bontorin is pulling the trigger in the key spots. Crowd getting a little restless. Left hands traded. Bontorin pressing, and he lands an uppercut and slips the reply. Bontorin continues to press. Schnell kicks to the body. He’s not showing much wear from his opponent’s work, but Schnell really hasn’t gotten a whole lot going. Bontorin straight left buckles Schnell’s legs a little. He tries to grab a Thai clinch, but Schnell pulls away. Crowd getting a little restless. Schnell tries to push but nearly eats a flying knee. They end again on the feet. MMA Junkie gives it to Bontorin, 10-9.

Round 3 – Schnell out quickly and has a high kick blocked. He sits down on a few punches. He’s trying to turn up the aggression. Bontorin swings back, and Schnell settles back into a more cautious approach that the crowd isn’t loving. Schnell trying to stay technical, but it’s not enough volume right now. Beneil Dariush vs. Tony Ferguson

Round 1 – Dariush takes the center, and Ferguson moves left on the outside. He’s switching stances and moving laterally. Dariush looking to pressure with punches, but Ferguson moving well and making it difficult to track. Dariush punches his way into a clinch. He changes levels and drags the fight down, avoiding a guillotine as they fall. Dariush postures, and Ferguson able to get the left leg up on the shoulder. Dariush having to be cautious with the triangle, so he keeps things stacked until he can clear the leg. Ferguson grabs closed guard, and Dariush starts punching from the top. Ferguson very active from his back, and Dariush is forces to worry about the submission attacks while he looks to strike from the top. Ferguson inverts as he tries to slip away, but Dariush stays heavy on top. Ferguson turns to butterfly guard, but he can’t lift Dariush. A few more punches from Dariush at the end. MMA Junkie gives the first to Dariush, 10-9.

Round 2 – Ferguson out quickly, but it’s Dariush again with the pressure with punches. Dariush presses to the fence, and Ferguson grabs the neck as he falls. Right arm is under the neck as he tries to squeeze the D’Arce, but Dariush shifts his weight to the left to keep space. He keeps turning, and Ferguson has to let it go. Dariush immediately starts punching from the top. Ferguson answers back with elbows from his back. A few big punches score for Dariush. He stands and controls the ankles briefly as he tries to work past the legs, but Ferguson able to regain guard. Ferguson sees a moment to scramble, and he gets to this feet. Dariush rolls with him and is able to snag the leg and look for the heel hook. He’s got an angle bu can’t get the finish, so he climbs up and takes the dominant position. Wild moments there briefly. Dariush back on top in the final minute. Dariush sets firm shoulder pressure to hold his position until the bel. MMA Junkie gives it again to Dariush, 10-9.

Round 3 – Crowd trying to will something special from Ferguson. Dariush back on the forward pressure, moving forward and throwing punches. He moves inside, and Ferguson grabs his neck. Dariush lifts him and slams him to the canvas, relieving the pressure. Ferguson spins inverted and has his legs on the fence. Dariush cautious as he engages,, and the crowd wants the two back on their feet. Dariush keeping his pressure high and holding things on the floor. Ferguson can’t seem to get out of the position, and the crowd is getting a little restless. It’s still north-south for Dariush. Finally he’s able to move out to side control. Ferguson trying to control the neck from the bottom, and Dariush tries to sit heavy on the side. It creates a scramble, but Ferguson just can’t get up. Dariush tryiing to move pas the legs, but Ferguson slips to guard. His active legs are tough to pass. Dariush tries to punch away at the end. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Dariush, 10-9, and awards him the fight 30-27.

Round 1 – Oliveira with an early low kick that weeps Chandler to the floor. He pops back up and punches to the body. Oliveira goes to the leg again. He’s working that early. Oliveira shoots inside. Chandler tries to grab the guillotine as he falls. Not there. He tries to roll it over but can’t. Oliveira pops his head out and is on top. Chandler looks to scramble up. Oliveira moves to his back. Oliveira battling the hands as he moves to his knees and stands. he tries to slam back to the canvas, but Oliveira locks in the body triangle and stays on board. Three minutes remain. Chandler fighting the hands. He picks his moment and turns inside. Oliveira tries to grab the arm, but Chandler pulls free and moves to the feet. He kicks the legs a bit before Oliveira stands. Chandler tags him on the feet. Oliveira starts looking for the takedown. Chandler pushes him down and keeps punches. Oliveira settles on his back and trie sot recover. Chandler moves forward to engage but has to be careful. He settles into Oliveira’s guard. Chandler postures and just narrowly avoids an upkick before settling back on top. Oliveira holding tight, but Chandler presses down on his face. Chandler stands at the end. Heck of a round.M MMA Junkie gives it to Chandler, 10-9.

Round 2 – They engage quickly. Oliveira lands a huge left hand. Chandler is hurt. He tries to recover. Oliveira sees his chance and continues punching. He’s aggressive, and he scores again. Chandler trying like hell to create some space, but the vicious attack continues, and this is over. Unbelievable, and Oliveira scales the cage to go pose with the broadcast team before jumping in the crowd to celebrate the massive result. Wow.
