There are now 60 million people paying for an Apple Music subscription, with the service having added 10 million since the end of January. That means Apple has been adding around two million new subscribers a month in 2019.

The news may set some warning klaxons off within rival Spotify, which although still significantly bigger (with 100 million subscribers at the end of March) only added four million in that first quarter of the year. We’ll await Spotify’s Q2 financials next month for a direct comparison of the respective services’ growth, however.

Apple’s Eddy Cue revealed the 60m milestone in an interview with French site Numerama, with a couple of extra nuggets worth thinking about. First: Beats 1 has “tens of millions of listeners” – a rare figure for Apple Music’s live radio station, if a carefully-vague one. Second, Cue praised the new lyrics feature in the version of Apple Music for the upcoming iOS 13 software, adding “and we’ve entered them for the most part”. At a time when lyrics are sparking copyright rows for companies like Google and Pandora, the fact that Apple is creating/curating its own lyrics shouldn’t go unnoticed.
