JioSaavn’s AO Labs offers direct distribution to emerging artists

Indian streaming service JioSaavn is launching a new scheme offering direct distribution to emerging, unsigned artists. It’s part of its existing ‘Artist Originals’ initiative, and is called ‘AO Labs’.

It’ll encourage musicians to submit their demos to JioSaavn’s A&R team, based in Mumbai and New York. Artists chosen by the team will get upfront payments, marketing support and analytics tools, while their music will also be distributed beyond JioSaavn, globally, courtesy of the company’s partnership with The Orchard.

“This program intends to find and provide a platform for the next generation of independent artists,” said Artist Originals director of A&R Hiba Irshad in a statement.

JioSaavn takes on Gaana’s HotShots with Triller partnership

In July we wrote about the launch by Indian streaming service Gaana of ‘HotShots’, a TikTok-style short-video feature built in to its service. Now Gaana’s biggest rival in India, JioSaavn, is making its own move through a partnership with Triller.

“JioSaavn will soon be embedding Triller into the streamer; front and centre,” claimed the latter’s announcement of the deal.

“When any music video is watched within the JioSaavn streamer it will automatically be a Triller music video, which will exponentially grow Triller’s users and usage. Furthermore, JioSaavn’s streamer will have a prominent button to ‘Make a Triller Video’ on the main screen of the platform.”

JioSaavn adds ‘Pro Rewards’ feature for paying subscribers

We reported yesterday on concerns that India’s growth in paid music subscriptions has slowed down. Now one of the main Indian streaming services, JioSaavn, has a new initiative that it hopes will make its JioSaavn Pro subscription tier more attractive to listeners.

The new feature is called JioSaavn Pro Rewards, and it’ll offer a range of benefits to subscribers, from three months of livestreamed yoga classes to discounts on e-health services.

JioSaavn is working with partner companies on all this: Sarva Yoga, HealthifyMe, 1MG and Care·fit, with the pitch to listeners being that they could get much more value in the rewards than they spend paying for a JioSaavn subscription – that costs 399 rupees a year, but the rewards for the month of May are worth 2,350 rupees alone, according to the company.

“We want a JioSaavn Pro subscription to add more value to our users’ lives beyond just ad-free and offline listening,” said VP of consumer revenue Mihir Shah. As part of the announcement, JioSaavn said that its subscriber total already grew fourfold since early 2019, although it did not offer any figures with that claim.
