[mellow music plays]
Crew 1: All right, y’all, lock it up.
Glen Powell: What’s up, big dog?
Glen Powell Sr.: Oh, you got the collar up.
Glen Powell: Oh, you you wanna pop ’em up?
Glen Powell Sr.: Yeah.
[both laugh]
Crew 2: Camera’s good.
Glen Powell: All right, dude. Let’s f****** go. When do you feel like was the first time you felt I may have a career in acting?
Glen Powell Sr.: I go back to on the set of ‘The Great Debaters’. We were out there, Mom and I, we’re in the audience, and we’re up there watching the person who was auditioning fumble his lines over and over and over again. And Denzel [Washington] was getting really frustrated. Then this guy started getting really flustered. He started swearing, and Denzel said, “Hey, man, there are kids in here. Be a professional.” And so he ends that, and then he goes, “Where's Glen Powell?” We're gonna film that scene now.” And Mom and I are up there going, “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe he’s gotta do it right now.”
Retta (as Claudette): We’re thinkin’ you’re up.
Glen Powell (as Gary Johnson): I’m up? What — what is “up”?
Retta (as Claudette): Congrats, Gary, you just got promoted to contract killer.
Glen Powell Sr.: You get up there, and in one take, you nailed your scene.
Retta (as Claudette): Look at Gary.
Sanjay Rao (as Phil): The man is a natural.
Glen Powell Sr.: And Denzel goes, “That’s what I’m talkin’ about. That’s how you do it.”
Glen Powell: Yeah.
Glen Powell Sr.: “Cut. We’re done.”
Retta (as Claudette): OK, Daniel Day!
Glen Powell Sr.: And then right after that, Ed Limato, Denzel’s agent, came up to us and said, “Your son has what it takes, and if you’ll move him to Hollywood, I’ll help him.”
Glen Powell: I remember that being a crazy moment for all of us ’cause I had just started University of Texas and was so pumped to be there and didn't want to leave.
Glen Powell Sr.: Yeah.
Glen Powell: You know? There was a real moment, as a family, we all looked at each other and were like, “Let’s give this a shot.” And that's what it’s been, the team sport the whole time.
Glen Powell (as Gary Johnson): My simple question is, How many of you think you know yourselves?
Glen Powell Sr.: What was it like sharing my name growing up?
[both chuckle]
Glen Powell: I don’t think there’s a girl that I’ve said my name to on the planet that hasn’t gone, “Huh.”
[both laugh]
Adria Arjona (as Madison Figueroa Masters): Are you enjoying your pie?
Glen Powell (as Gary Johnson): All pie is good pie.
Glen Powell: Over the course of time, there is something so great about having something that’s unique. Something that doesn’t feel expected.
Glen Powell Sr.: Yeah.
Glen Powell: And it makes you kinda memorable.
Retta (as Claudette): Yo, Ron is f****** dope. [chuckles wickedly] He’s like a Caucasian Idris.
Glen Powell: I don’t think, like, growing up in, like, elementary, or middle school, high school, college, I loved the name Glen, but, like, I’m —
Glen Powell Sr.: It’s growing on you.
Glen Powell: It is, man.
[both laugh]
Glen Powell: Starting to figure it out.
Sanjay Rao (as Phil): Go get her, Ron!
Glen Powell: How was it for you growing up with the name Glen?
Glen Powell Sr.: What I can tell you is how it's affected my life now, is when I call to get a restaurant reservation …
[laughs]
Glen Powell Sr.: … OK, I get a great table. And then I walk in the door, and it’s like, “OK.”
[both laugh]
Adria Arjona (as Madison Figueroa Masters): Who the f*** is Gary?
Glen Powell (as Gary Johnson): I’m Gary.
Glen Powell Sr.: When we were in New York watching the screening of ‘Hit Man’ at Lincoln Center with Netflix, Rick introduced me as Glen Powell.
Glen Powell: Oh, ‘cause that was during the strike.
Glen Powell Sr.: Yeah, so you couldn’t be there. And here we got 1,600 people in the theater, and Rick goes, “I have a big surprise for you tonight: Glen Powell is in the house.” And everybody goes, “Oh, my gosh.” There was a whole buzz in the room.
[chuckles]
Glen Powell Sr.: “Would you stand, Glen?” And I stand, and it went from “Ah — oh.”
[both laugh]
Glen Powell Sr.: And I waved, but I did have one of your cutouts and pictures that I could show people, but …
[chuckles]
Glen Powell Sr.: It’s kinda nice to have your name.
[laughs]
Glen Powell: Yeah, hey, man, you too.
Bryant Carroll (as Walt): Uh … How’s the pie?
Glen Powell (as Gary Johnson): All pie is good pie.
Bryant Carroll (as Walt): All right. [chuckles]
Glen Powell: My dad’s one of the most sweet people on the planet. I think for being the last guy I can imagine would hire a hit man. I think you'd need somebody, like, aggressive.
Glen Powell Sr.: Hmm.
Glen Powell: I think you’d hire the Russian.
[both laugh]
Glen Powell (as Russian Hit Man): [in Russian accent] Speedboat. Like ‘Miami Vice.’
Glen Powell: I think that’s one of the best skills that you’ve instilled in me is how to problem-solve and talk stuff out. I think you would never get to that point. You’re always someone who solves the problem long before violence or bad choices get to it.
[chuckles]
Glen Powell: You’re Switzerland in our family. [chuckles] Switzerland. I think you’d need the Russian.
Glen Powell Sr.: Wanna know who I would pick?
Glen Powell: Who?
Glen Powell Sr.: I’d be Ron. Not because Ron was an effective hit man, but because he had compassion. And I would probably want somebody to talk me out of it.
[both laugh]
Glen Powell (as Gary Johnson): I know you’re taking a big leap with me, and there are some … factual loose threads we’ll be dealing with, but … I think I’m in love with you.
Glen Powell Sr.: I just wanna thank you for this journey. Oh my gosh, to be on the set of ‘Hit Man’, to get to know all these wonderful people, to be a part of a great movie and to share it with you.
Glen Powell: Yeah.
Glen Powell Sr.: So thank you.
Glen Powell: It’s been a great journey that we’ve gotten to do together. I think that’s the best part about this is, you know, obviously I’ve loved making movies since I was a kid, but to get to do it with you guys has made it very special.
Glen Powell Sr.: Awesome.
Glen Powell (as Gary Johnson): Seize the identity you want for yourself.
