New York Magazine’s August 28–September 10 issue is the fall preview issue, with a cover story by features writer Rachel Handler, who profiles the brains behind the year’s most delightfully dumb comedy, Bottoms. In addition, New York’s critics review the most notable culture of the season, including movies, television, podcasts, restaurants, art, architecture, and more.
“Our fall preview issue this year comes amid a historic Hollywood strike, which means much of the schedule has been thrown into disarray, with release dates getting pushed into 2024. But there’s still a ton to enjoy,” said culture editor Gazelle Emami. “In particular, we wanted to spotlight three rising talents in Hollywood: Emma Seligman, Rachel Sennott, and Ayo Edebiri, who met and started working together as NYU students and whose careers are simultaneously blowing up. Now their first project as a trio — the hilarious, lesbian teen fight-club movie, Bottoms — is one of the most original comedies in years.”

Elsewhere in the issue, Frank Rich interviews playwright David Ives and director Joe Mantello about their collaboration with the late Steven Sondheim for his final work. In addition, features writer Lisa Miller profiles physician Lisa Sanders who made a name for herself as someone who could solve patients’ medical mysteries, but has now encountered a mystery too difficult to solve.
