New York Magazine was recognized yesterday by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) with two National Magazine Awards. The magazine was honored in the category of Single-Topic Issue for “The War and New York,” which examined the ripple effect of the Israel-Hamas war in New York City. Under the leadership of photography director Jody Quon, the magazine won for the first time for overall excellence in photography, with ASME citing “Let’s Have a Real Conversation About Barbara Walters,” photographs by Brigitte Lacombe; the 2023 July 3–16 issue featuring a cover portrait of RFK Jr. by Philip Montgomery; and “The Power Issue,” photographed by Mark Peterson. New York’s ASME NEXT winners, Rebecca Alter, a staff writer at Vulture, and Isabela Quintero, a photo editor at New York, were also honored during the April 2 awards ceremony.

“I am so happy for Jody Quon and her colleagues in the photography department,” says David Haskell, editor-in-chief of New York. “Working with them is thrilling and intense and exciting, always — they can make an image of a handheld vacuum look like a work of art (they just did), and they excel at the ambitious, stylish, witty photographic portfolios that were recognized by this award. And ‘The War and New York’ was surely one of the most challenging, heartfelt, creative endeavors this magazine has ever produced. We set out to expose, with a kind of omniscient empathy, the pain and anger coursing through the city last fall. We deliberated over a thousand judgment calls, from the cover to the captions, finding our way through difficult conversations about grief and, as we wrote in the introduction, the ‘vast distances between one another’s sense of justice.’ It is incredibly moving to me that the process of intense, deadline journalism brought us, as an institution, closer, not further apart.”

New York previously won in the category of Single-Topic Issue in 2023 for “10 Years Since Trayvon.” In 2024, New York tied for the most nominations of any publication. New York was nominated for General Excellence (News, Sports, and Entertainment) for the ninth consecutive year and had work recognized across a variety of written journalism and photography.
