The New Jersey man who allegedly conspired with his girlfriend and a homeless veteran to scam GoFundMe donors out of hundreds of thousands of dollars was indicted for the ruse on Tuesday, prosecutors said.
Mark D’Amico was indicted on six separate charges related to the case, a prosecutor in Burlington County said.
His alleged co-conspirators in the scam, Katelyn McClure and Johnny Bobbitt, have pleaded guilty in exchange for cooperation with prosecutors.
McClure, who is D’Amico’s ex-girlfriend, copped to second-degree theft by deception and faces up to four years in prison.
McLure, 28, of Bordentown, NJ, claimed online that she was stranded on a Philadelphia highway in 2017 when her car ran out of gas — but homeless veteran Bobbitt came to her rescue and gave his last $20 to fill up.
Her tale went viral online — and then McClure and D’Amico started a GoFundMe page they explained was to help raise money for Bobbit. The trio raised $400,000 in the fundraiser.
The ruse fell apart when Bobbitt sued the pair for not giving him his cut of the money, prompting authorities to investigate.
Bobbitt was sentenced to five years’ probation in April. He’ll also have to repay the money he got in the scam.
