Competition is needed to improve health insurance options for Americans

With all the talk of “free” everything by the far-left political candidates, it’s about time those of us back here on Planet Earth embrace what makes America so great: the competitive spirit.

Health insurance options have been limited by arcane state-line rules for far too long, and made worse by Obamacare.

In a global economy, it’s beyond comprehension that health insurers have to design plans for each state — and it’s even more mind-boggling that customers can only buy a plan that is approved in their state.

Competition brings out the best in people, and in business. Some rise and some fall by the way they conduct commerce.

The politically protected health insurance industry hasn’t competed for customers in over a decade. It’s time to put people before politics, and the solution lies in simple business smarts.

Today, most states and counties have only two to three options. Imagine if there were only three pizza stands in New York City. Prices would be outrageous!

But walk around the city and what do you see on every street (besides an overpriced Starbucks)? Pizzerias and Italian restaurants — and for the most part, they all serve great pizza. A pizza shop that stays open more than a year in NYC has to be darn good.

You can get a decent slice of pizza in New York for $1; $3 buys you two slices and a soda. Even the award-winning pizzas at places like Lombardi’s, Juliana’s or John’s go for only about $3 a slice! Now that’s competition.

Just think, if there were 25 or 50 health insurance companies to choose from, consumers could find the one that fits their needs best.

With state lines torn down, there is no doubt that the quality of health insurance coverage will go up, and the prices will have to be kept honest. Just like a good slice of NYC pizza.
