UFC star Dustin Poirier teases one last fight as retirement looms

One of UFC’s best fighters might not be calling it a career just yet.

On Monday morning, 35-year-old Dustin Poirier sent a flurry of tweets insinuating he would fight one final time.

“Uno mas,” the lightweight tweeted subliminally at 4:20 a.m.

“The Last Dance. Let em know,” Poirier added.

After Poirier lost his lightweight title fight to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 on June 1, he implied he might step away from fighting for good.

“I think this might be it, Joe,” he told commentator Joe Rogan in the octagon post-fight.

Poirier also shared a poignant scene with his family, consoling his crying daughter Parker.

He echoed those sentiments of leaning toward retirement during the subsequent press conference.

“I was fighting to be the world champion. What else am I fighting for?” Poirier said. “Me and my family are good. I don’t need the money. … My health is first. … At some time, this is going to catch up to me. … I don’t want the sport to retire me and squeeze me out.”

On X, Poirier insinuated that he could fight recently suspended lightweight Arman Tsarukyan or have a rematch vs. Makhachev, the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter who Poirier battled well for nearly five rounds.

Given his limited remaining time, Poiriers best shot at the elusive lightweight title would indeed be fighting Makhachev again, which would mark the reigning champion’s first rematch since he fought Alexander Volkanovski twice in 2023.

Poirier, known as “The Diamond”, spent the weekend in Las Vegas, meeting fans and offering commentary as part of the festivities for UFC 303 during International Fight Week.

When asked by ESPN’s Daniel Cormier about fighting Justin Gaethje a third time, Poirier seemed open to the idea.

“You know, I don’t like to leave things unsettled,” Poirier remarked. “We are 1-1 with one KO apiece. So, the rubber match? I don’t know. We’ve got to see.”

Poirier lost the BMF title fight to Gaethje at UFC 291 in July 2023 but beat the fellow 35-year-old in April 2018.

The Lafayette, La., native had overwhelming crowd support in Atlantic City’s Prudential Center and is one of the more beloved fighters in the sport, so one final go-around would be highly anticipated.
