Why partner with us

Partnering with publishers with a community-centered approach to information sharing is an incredibly valuable way to reach audiences. Outlier works with mission-aligned nonprofits, foundations, and small businesses to create this type of content because it fills storytelling gaps for both of our audiences.

The value goes beyond impressions or clicks. It is about leveraging our newsroom’s deep understanding of and relationship with our city and its residents, and our expertise in telling relevant and resonant stories. 

We have the unique ability to reach Detroiters with our work; we are Detroit residents ourselves, and we seek to ensure our audience is driving our work across all channels. To do this, we engage with readers regularly using our SMS system, by attending public meetings, and by hosting events.

We rely on writers’ skill sets to craft content that is approachable, tailored toward audiences, and rooted in community, and while sponsored stories are directed by our partners, we approach them with the same lens as our journalism.


Our sponsored content and advertising policies

Outlier Media’s revenue team produces sponsored content packages with partners for revenue and/or marketing purposes. Sponsored content is an advertising product separate from editorial content.

Sponsored content provides an opportunity for partners to enhance their message, dive into an issue that’s important to their organization, or drive attendance to their events or classes. It can provide organizations with additional communications capacity by accessing Outlier Media’s audience of engaged Detroiters.

The stories or videos are produced not by Outlier’s newsroom but by freelance journalists, project editors, or the sponsor themself. 

Sponsored content may be placed on Outlier’s website, in our newsletters, and on our social media pages. It is clearly labeled as “sponsored content” and visually differentiated to prevent readers from confusing it with independent editorial content. Outlier Media will also place paid display advertisements on our website and in our newsletters.  

Sponsors play no role in our editorial decision-making. We maintain a firewall between news coverage decisions and sources of all revenue. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors or their products, services or opinions.

Outlier Media may refuse publication of any content that undermines the integrity of its brand. No political endorsements will be permitted. No AI-generated images or misleading content are allowed.
