20-Year-Old New York Man Rescued from Cave After Getting Trapped for Hours

A 20-year-old is lucky to be alive after he was stuck in a cave he went inside over the weekend, authorities said. 

The Albany County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team rescued the Queensbury man, who remains unidentified, on Sunday, June 30, after he entered a cave in the county's Hilltowns and got trapped as he tried to leave, said Sheriff Craig Apple in a post on X, formally known as Twitter.

“Earlier this evening a group from Queensbury entered the Clarksville cave and upon exiting one subject became stuck," his post read.

What caused the man to get stuck remains unknown at this time.

Apple added, "After five hours of rigging and setting up a variety of pulley systems the 20 year old from Queensbury was pulled from the cave with very minor injuries. Awesome job! Training equals success!"

According to the Times Union, during the recovery efforts, rocks at the cave’s entrance were loosened, and as a result, the cave will be closed to the public until the situation is resolved.

PEOPLE has reached out the Albany County Sheriff's Office for comment.

Caves in the Hilltowns is where emergency workers from across the country converged last month for rescue training, per the Times Union. The mock rescue was similar to other drills that wilderness search and rescue groups conduct to prepare for a real event.
