It wasn’t that long ago that “oil” was somewhat of a dirty word in the skincare world. But these days, oil is no longer thought of as something that needs to be removed from your skin — rather, if you're on the quest for a radiant, glowy complexion, a face oil is something to add into your routine.

Experts Say

Those with dehydrated or mature skin may benefit from a face oil. Face oils can help lock in the hydration you’ve added to your skin from your serums and moisturizers, making them a great way to add a layer of hydration to your skin.” —Dr. Jeannette Graf, board-certified dermatologist

We put 36 face oils to the test, evaluating their consistency, absorption, and how they made our skin look. We ended up with 11 favorites that earned our PEOPLE Tested seal of approval, offering a little something for everyone.

Star Qualities
  • Extremely affordable

  • Beneficial for all skin types and safe for sensitive skin

  • Reduction in the appearance of fine lines during testing

  • Got rid of our dry patches, even in the dead of winter

Red Flags
  • We loved everything about this face oil!

We tested a variety of face oils at a variety of price points, but none performed quite as well as this budget-friendly option, which rings in at less than 15 dollars and scored perfect marks in every testing category. The combination of argan oil and rose oil delivers a hefty dose of antioxidant-rich vitamin E, along with tons of fatty acids that offer a mega-hit of moisture.

It’s a thick, rich oil, but there’s no need to stress about it being greasy. We found the formula to feel emollient and silky, and we loved how quickly our dry skin absorbed it without leaving behind any residue. Surprisingly, we even saw a reduction in the appearance of our fine lines, which is always a win in our book. If you’re looking for a do-it-all face oil that won’t break the bank, this is it.

What We Think Now

After six months, we still find ourselves routinely (and confidently!) reaching for this face oil. We use this oil been on different spots depending on the season, like our cheeks instead of our T-zones in warmer weather. Not only have we noticed a complete decline in our weather-dependent dry patches, but we’ve noticed how flawlessly our makeup glides onto our skin after regularly using this in our routine.

Oils: Argan, rose | Benefits: Hydration, anti-aging | Size: 1 ounce

Star Qualities
  • Includes additional anti-aging benefits at a very affordable price point

  • Heavier oil that's still non-comedogenic

Red Flags
  • Not the best option for sensitive skin due to retinol and fragrance

Palmer's may be known for their cocoa butter (popular for fading stretch marks), but don’t sleep on this face oil. It combines a lengthy list of 10 different oils, along with the namesake cocoa and shea butters. It felt super light on our skin, absorbing quickly and leaving us with a nice finish that provided a solid base for our makeup. It doesn’t necessarily leave skin glowy, but its formulation with retinol and vitamin C makes it a great pick at this price point.

While it can't replace a retinol serum, it does provide some of the benefits of retinol in a gentler form. We’d even go so far as to say that this was better than more expensive oils we’ve tried in the past — just be wary of the added fragrance in this one, as it may not be the friendliest towards sensitive skin.

What We Think Now

After several months of use, we haven’t experienced any breakouts or irritation from this budget-friendly oil. In fact, we’ve only found ourselves wanting to integrate this oil further into our self-care routines. We’ve been using this on our legs and hands for added moisture — talk about being multi-functional.

Oils: Blend of 10, including sweet almond oil, grape seed oil, macadamia seed oil, sesame seed oil, coconut oil | Benefits: Hydration, anti-aging | Size: 1 ounce

Star Qualities
  • Quality and packaging feel reflective of the high price point

  • Left skin looking and feeling conditioned without greasiness

  • Feels more like a serum than a slippery oil (and preps skin well for makeup)

Red Flags
  • Doesn’t provide glowy or dewy results like others we tested

If we’re spending $147 on a single ounce of facial oil, we want it to be worth every penny — and the Epara Balancing Face Oil delivers. Its decadent concoction of moringa, marula, and ylang ylang oils come together to even skin tone, brighten complexions (even those hyper-pigmented spots), and leave skin feeling more supple than ever. This rich oil gave our faces a natural luminescence that looked like our skin, only better, and served as a wonderful sealant on top of our bare skin.

Our only qualm was that we didn’t see as glowy of a finish as we did with others, but this may be ideal for those with combination or oily skin. If you feel like splurging, this is the one we recommend — and as you only need a few small drops, a little goes a long way.

What We Think Now

Over six months, we found ourselves in a rhythm with this luxe oil. When applying three to four times a week (no more, or we’d be a little too oily), this product was a saving grace for dry skin. We loved this product for post-beach hydration when our skin was in desperate need of nourishment. With no declines in the product’s performance over half a year, we still think it’s worth every penny.

Oils: Moringa, marula, ylang ylang III | Benefits: Brightens, moisturizes, softens, soothes | Size: 1.06 ounce

Star Qualities
  • Rose fragrance and beautiful packaging offer a spa-like experience

  • Absorbs extremely quickly but still imparts plenty of moisture

  • Vitamin C for brightening power to help even complexion

Red Flags
  • Pricier than most on the list

To be fair, pretty much any and every face oil out there is a good option for those with dry skin, but this proved to be the best of the best. Those of us with dry skin loved how comfortable and light it felt, while still being extremely effective. This oil gets bonus points for its smoothing results and delightful rose scent, two qualities that make this oil feel like a spa facial in a bottle.

Each bottle contains the petals of one full rose, making this a beautiful addition to your skincare shelf. Not only is rose a natural source of skin-brightening vitamin C, there’s also extra vitamin C added to this formula, making it a great pick for those with uneven skin tone. This product is on the pricier side, but its ultra-nourishing formula locks in natural oils and helps softens skin over time, making it well worth the cost.

What We Think Now

We loved this oil so much that we gave it a permanent spot in our morning and night routine. We noticed changes in the smoothness and softness of our skin with consistent use of this mild oil, which is gentle enough to use daily without breakouts or blemishes. We’re recommending this to everyone we know, whether they have youthful or mature skin —  there’s something for everyone in this little glass bottle.

Oils: Rose, apricot kernel, sunflower seed | Benefits: Hydration, anti-aging, brightening | Size: 1.01 ounce

Star Qualities
  • Leaves skin with just the right amount of glow

  • Contains only one ingredient so it's suitable for sensitive skin

  • A little goes a long way, adding to value

Red Flags
  • Gets a bit runny which can make application messy

The fewer the ingredients, the fewer potential irritants. That’s part of the reason why we deemed this top for sensitive skin. It contains the namesake ingredient and the namesake ingredient only. Plum oil is packed with omega fatty acids for tons of moisture and nourishment, and is naturally rich in all kinds of antioxidants (vitamin A, vitamin E, polyphenols, and more) to protect skin from free radical damage.

The level of glow it delivered was nothing short of magical, and even though it is one of our more expensive winners, we gave it a five out of five in the value category. This gentle oil is definitely worth the splurge, not only for its high-quality formula and ultra-safe results, but because a little goes a long way — a drop a day will keep the dry skin away.

What We Think Now

By the end of this testing period, we’re likening the use of this oil to an act of self care — that’s how good it is. We notice visibly juicier skin as soon as 12 hours after application, and it works wonders for overnight and daytime wear. We’re still loving the minimal ingredient list, which is helpful for those with sensitive skin.

Oils: Plum oil | Benefits: Hydration, antioxidant protection | Size: 1 ounce, 2.03 ounces

Star Qualities
  • CBD helps smooth uneven texture

  • Made a visible difference in the dryness of our skin

  • Worked well with skincare regimens like gua shas and other face tools

Red Flags
  • Felt slightly greasy

We noticed particularly smooth and hydrated skin after we started using this hemp-infused face oil which reduces the appearance of dark spots, controls oil production, and generally soothes skin. We thought it hit all the right notes, absorbing quickly thanks to its lightweight consistency — leaving us with a luminescence that lasted until the morning.

Added ingredients of sea buckthorn oil and other botanical extracts make for a collagen-building cocktail that our dry skin loved year-round, keeping complexions balanced and moisturized in all climates

What We Think Now

Anyone with normal to dry skin will fall for the smoothing effects of this oil. We noticed a difference between our skin’s appearance and texture when we used this product consistently, and we were shocked to see how much better our skin felt after making it part of our regular routine. We’ve even started using it in other aspects of our skincare routine, applying it before using our gua sha to aid in lymphatic drainage.

Oils: Broad spectrum CBD, CBG, sea buckthorn oil, squalane | Benefits: Smoothing, brightening, balancing oil, calming, plumping, antioxidant protection | Size: 1 ounce

Star Qualities
  • Soothes dry or eczema-prone skin

  • Lightweight consistency absorbed quickly without pilling or feeling thick

  • Leaves skin looking and feeling healthy without greasiness

Red Flags
  • Minor pimples and bumps popped up after using too frequently

If your complexion is looking a little worse for wear during the winter, or you need to restore a bit of life back into sun-weathered skin, then your new best friend is this nutrient-packed oil from Youth to the People. This product was a relief for dry or eczema-prone skin, as its syrupy formula smoothed into a lightweight serum that sank effortlessly into our skin.

Its hero ingredients of maqui, prickly pear, and acai were working in overdrive to make our skin look soft and supple while also restoring its vibrance, leaving us with an ethereal glow without making us look greasy. We loved the results of this oil so much that we chose to go makeup-free — it made our skin look more alive than any foundation could.

What We Think Now

Even after several months of testing, we’re loving the life that this oil brings to our faces. We’ve started to get a little creative in the ways that we apply it, like dabbing a little over our foundation if it’s looking a bit cakey or restoring the glow to our skin if our powder is making us appear ashen. We want to douse ourselves in this oil, but unfortunately, overuse has led to a few surprise spots on our faces. We recommend around 2-3 drops of pure oil after cleanser for the best (non-pimply) results.

Oils: Maqui, acai, goji, prickly pear, squalane | Benefits: Smoothing texture, moisturizing, anti-aging | Size: 1 ounce

Star Qualities
  • Extremely affordable

  • 99.9 percent natural and dermatologist-tested

  • Preserves natural moisture during winter, keeping skin soft and supple

Red Flags
  • Heavier consistency can leave residue

  • Contains fragrance, which can be an irritant for some

Moisture is key when it comes to anti-aging skincare, and Burt’s Bees mastered moisturization with their rosehip face oil. The formula’s rosehip oil aids hydration and elasticity, according to Dr Michele J. Farber, a dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in Philadelphia. Further, Dr. Yadav says rosehip seed oil is “naturally rich in antioxidants, which help to protect the skin against free radicals to prevent premature aging.”

The oil is definitely one of the richer formulas we tested, and it didn’t absorb particularly quickly: We could still feel it on our skin a few minutes after application. This product is best suited for those who have especially dry skin or anyone looking to up their moisture in the winter. If you need an ultra-rich formula at an unbeatable price, this is the face oil for you.

What We Think Now

Over six months of testing, we were impressed by the moisturizing power of this face oil. This product got us through the winter months, keeping moisture locked in despite harsh climates. We didn’t notice any reduction of fine lines or wrinkles, so this product seems to be better for prevention, rather than reversibg already present signs of aging. Each bottle lasted us three months when using twice per day, and its ability to maintain soft skin in winter impressed us — needless to say, we will definitely keep buying this one.

Oils: Rosehip seed oil, jojoba oil, evening primrose seed | Benefits: Hydration, anti-aging, antioxidant protection | Size: 0.05 ounce

Star Qualities
  • Fairly priced, powerhouse moisturizer

  • Doubles as a treatment for stretch marks and scars

  • Provides a with a lit-from-within glow

Red Flags
  • Contains fragrance, which may be irritating for some

This face oil might seem like a steal, but its low cost only gets better when you consider how many different ways it can be used: You can use it on your face, body, hair, cuticles — you name it. It both nourished our skin (without leaving any trace of greasy residue or sticky texture) and minimized the appearance of scars and stretch marks, which helped it nab a perfect score in the value category. While we did like the fragrance (it wasn’t an overpowering scent), we want to note that it may be a potential irritant for those with sensitive skin types.

What We Think Now

Over the months of testing, we put the oil’s versatility to the test, using not only on our faces but our stretch marks, too. This oil locked in hydration and never felt heavy on our skin or made us break out. Once we incorporated this into our nightly routine, we woke up with glowing skin perfectly primed for makeup or SPF.

Oils: Mineral, sunflower, chamomile, rosemary, calendula | Benefits: Hydration, improves appearance of stretch marks and scars | Size: 2 ounces

Star Qualities
  • Suits all skin types

  • Provides high level of antioxidant protection in addition to hydration

  • Kept skin nourished during the dry winter months

Red Flags
  • Pricier than many others we tested

Many of our winning oils were lauded for being lightweight, but this one took the cake. There were no greasy elements to this formula, and we didn’t feel any residue on our skin after we applied it. It manages to strike the perfect balance of moisture and weight, so it’s not too heavy for any skin type. Case in point: This oil worked wonders for those with combination skin types, performing equally as well on oily spots as dry areas.

It’s an expensive product, but we liked how it made our skin feel, so we think it’s still worth the buy. Plus, this product could even replace your antioxidant serum, as ingredients like rosehip, pomegranate, and sea buckthorn oils are chock-full of antioxidants.

What We Think Now

After six months, we still continued to be surprised by the strength of this oil. It kept us adequately moisturized throughout the dry winter months, keeping our skin supple despite the cold conditions outside. We really noticed the sealing powers of this product when applied after our moisturizer, and its thin consistency continues to make us think that this would be a great option for every skin type.

When used consistently, anti-aging serums fight dark spots, fine lines and uneven texture. This Glow Recipe product was our favorite of 26 anti-aging serums we tested for the drastic improvement of skin texture we saw after eight weeks of testing.

What to Know About Face Oil

Type of Oils

We said it once, and we’ll say it again: Not all oils are created equal. Particularly if you’re concerned about breakouts or have oily skin to begin with, it’s important to choose wisely. For example, coconut oil tends to be comedogenic, clogging pores and potentially contributing to acne, notes New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Hadley King. On the flip side, argan and jojoba oils are non-comedogenic and can actually help balance the skin’s natural oil production, making them good for those with oily skin, she adds.

Other Ingredients

Some face oils, like our best overall pick, Acure Radically Rejuvenating Rose Argan Oil, are made up of oils and oils alone. Others, like Bio-Oil contain the addition of other ingredients. There’s no right or wrong — just bear in mind that if you have sensitive skin, it’s always best to stick with products that have minimal ingredient lists. Similarly, opt for ones that are fragrance-free, advises Dr. Michele J. Farber, a dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in Philadelphia.

Pricing

As with most other skincare or beauty products like, say, anti-aging serums or peptide creams, you can find face oils at a wide array of prices. However, our testing showed that more expensive isn’t necessarily better. For example, the best anti-aging option, Burt’s Bees Hydrating & Anti-Aging Facial Care, costs just $20, and our best vitamin E pick from Bio-Oil Skincare rings in at under $14. Point being, there’s certainly no need to spend a lot of money on a quality product.

Behind the Scenes

We tried out 35 different face oils in the lab and the real world to determine which were worth the buy. After picking which face oils performed best in the lab, our testers in the real world implemented the products into their skincare routines for up to six months. From there, we perfected this list based on long-term, first-hand experiences from real people.

We rated the oils from 1 to 5 (from worst to best) on five different criteria:

  • Consistency: Most of our favorites had a lightweight consistency that didn’t leave our skin feeling weighed down by leftover residue.
  • Feel: We don’t want to use skincare that leaves us feeling greasy, which is why we prioritized products that left skin feeling soft and soothed.
  • Absorption: The best products absorbed into our skin enough to layer under makeup. Products that sat on top of our skin, rather than sinking into it, got lower scores.
  • Glow: Products that left a lasting glow on the skin earned top marks in this category. An oil should leave skin looking dewy and healthy — if it didn’t do so, it didn’t make our list.
  • Overall Value: Keeping in mind the overall performance of each oil, we weighed the quality and price to make sure all the products we recommend are worth the cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are oils actually good for your face?

To put it simply: Yes. Face oils help to support the skin barrier and lock in moisture and are especially good for those with dry skin, says Dr. King. Plus, many of them are naturally rich in good-for-you omega fatty acids and antioxidants and also have anti-inflammatory properties.

  • What oil do dermatologists recommend?

Our dermatologists agreed that rosehip oil and jojoba oil are standouts. The former is rich in antioxidants and can boost skin’s elasticity; the latter is anti-inflammatory and can balance skin’s oil production. Marula and argan oils were also lauded, though they may not be suitable for all skin types.

“If you’re acne-prone I recommend seeking out a face oil that is suitable for your skin type,” Dr. Graf says. “You may want to avoid oils that could be pore-clogging like argan or coconut oil and instead stick to a product with tea tree oil included, for example. Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties which makes it good for acne-prone skin.”

  • How do you use a face oil?

Dr. King suggests applying face oils on damp skin or layering over a product that contains humectants (ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid that attract water to the skin and hold it there). Because oils have occlusive properties, they then help to lock in that moisture. To that point, it’s always best to apply a face oil as one of the last steps in your skincare routine so that it can seal in any other moisturizing ingredients, adds Dr. Farber.
