Caitlin Clark Leads the 2024 ESPYs with Most Nominations

The nominees for this year’s ESPYs have just been announced — and WNBA rookie star Caitlin Clark leads the pack as the athlete with the most nominations. 

Clark earned three nominations for 2024 ESPY Awards from her time as a member of the University of Iowa women’s basketball team, according to a press release from ESPN. She is nominated for best athlete, women’s sports; best record-breaking performance (for being the NCAA’s all-time scoring leader by surpassing Pete Maravich’s record) and best college athlete, women’s sports.

Other notable nominees include, gymnastics superstar Simone Biles (nominated for best comeback athlete), Super Bowl champ Patrick Mahomes (best athlete, men's sports and best NFL player) and tennis standout Coco Gauff, who is up for best athlete, women’s sports and best tennis player.

If Mahomes and MLB star Shohei Ohtani earn their second win for best athlete, men's sports, they will join LeBron James, Lance Armstrong and Tiger Woods as the only athletes to win the category multiple times, according to ESPN.

The 2024 ESPYs will air live on ABC on Thursday, July 11 at 8 p.m. ET. The ceremony will be hosted by tennis legend Serena Williams.

In addition to the athletic accolades, the Arthur Ashe award for courage, the Jimmy V award for perseverance, and the Pat Tillman award for service will also be presented during the ceremony, with honorees to be announced, per the release.

At last year’s ESPYs, Clark’s on-court rival, Angel Reese, won breakout athlete of the year, beating out Clark along with San Francisco 49ers’ Brock Purdy and Seattle Mariners’ Julio Rodríguez. Reese, the Tigers and Clark's Iowa Hawkeyes pulled 9.9 million viewers to the 2023 NCAA women's championship game.
