David Spade knows when to follow the unspoken rules of Hollywood – even if they work against him.

Spade, 51, is notorious for being a bachelor – and thanks to an interview in the September issue of Details, we now know why he might be hesitant to settle down.

The Saturday Night Live alum recalled a time when he had then-girlfriend Lara Flynn Boyle stolen right out of his arms by none other than Jack Nicholson himself!

Apparently Nicholson knew what he wanted, and he wasn’t afraid to ask for it – or so Spade says.

“Nicholson asked Lara Flynn Boyle out in front of me, while we were all smoking a doob somewhere,” Spade said.

When Spade didn’t jump to defend their relationship to Nicholson, “she got mad because I didn’t stick up for her,” he added. “I said, ‘I’ve been in this town long enough to know when I’m outranked. You’re either gonna go out with him or you’re not.’ She goes, ‘No way. He’s worse than Trump!’ ”

But Boyle must not have been too turned off by the idea, because she was later caught in a car crash with Nicholson and “crawled out of the sunroof and yelled, ‘I have a boyfriend! I can’t be here!’ ”

(Boyle and Nicholson would go on to date for just over a year.)

Eventually, the National Enquirer caught wind of the scandal and called Spade to get a comment.

“That’s how I found out,” he admitted.
