Norwegian Cyclist Andre Drege, 25, Dies in Tour of Austria Crash: 'Forever in Our Hearts'

The final stage of the Tour of Austria was canceled following the death of Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege.

Drege, 25, died on Saturday, July 6 after falling and losing control of his bike during a descent on Grossglockner mountain in stage 4 of the competition, race organizers confirmed.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we have to announce the passing of André Drege,” a race note read. “On Saturday 6th July following a very serious crash during the descent of the Großglockner at stage 4 of the Tour of Austria, André crashed and sustained severe injuries.”

The note continued, “Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with André’s family and loved ones, his team Coop-Repsol, during this incredibly difficult time.”

Drege’s team and the International Cycling Union (UCI) also shared statements regarding the tragedy.

"The UCI is devastated to learn of the death of professional cyclist Andre Drege at the Tour of Austria," the International Cycling Union (UCI) posted on X. "Our thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates."

Local police told Norwegian TV 2 that they are investigating the cause of the crash, USA Today reported.

A rescue helicopter responded to the accident, which happened when Drege, who was part of a breakaway group, crashed on the descent from Grossglockner to Heiligenblut, according to an Austrian news outlet.

In lieu of the final stage of the race on Sunday, riders participated in a memorial ride in the athlete’s honor. 

"For André, forever in our hearts," his teammates posted on X.

Drege’s death comes just over a year after 26-year-old Gino Mäder died in a crash during a stage of the Tour de Suisse.
