Dove Cameron and Damiano David Planned Their First Date Backstage at Måneskin's Madison Square Garden Show

Romance came about naturally for Dove Cameron and Damiano David.

The "Boyfriend" singer, 28, opened up about the origin of her relationship with the Måneskin band member in a new digital cover story interview with Cosmopolitan, revealing they planned their first date while backstage at the Italian rock band's Madison Square Garden concert in New York City.

"The first time [we met] was at the 2022 VMAs and his band and I were both up for the same award," Cameron, who won best new artist at the awards show, told the outlet. "You just run into different artists backstage, and when I met them, I don’t think I even spoke to Damiano."

"I didn’t think anything of it. I went about my night. I’d just won a VMA," she recalled. "And then a couple months later, their team had reached out to me about coming to their album release and I couldn’t make it work with the dates, but I was like, 'Oh, that’s so sweet that they thought about me. We only met once.'"

Cameron was later set to collaborate with Måneskin, and the band asked her to join their tour as an opening act, but she "couldn't make it happen." At the 2023 MTV VMAs, she told Cosmopolitan, "we had a reason to talk to each other."

He approached her during the ceremony. "It felt like it had been 10 years or something. When we had met before, he was in a very different space and I was too, so we didn’t register each other at all in that way," said the former Disney Channel star. "And then he was like, 'We’re starting our world tour at Madison Square Garden. If you’re still in town in a few days, we’d love it if you came.'"

She attended the concert in September 2023, and things were "super innocent" with David, 25. "And then they invited me back to their greenroom and then we started talking and then he asked me to the after-party," said Cameron. "And then very quickly it became 'Let’s have dinner at 8:00 at this spot.'"

"He’s a Capricorn, so he was very much like, 'OK, these are my intentions,'" she added. "It was super honorable. He’s like a 1950s gentleman, angel, teddy bear. He’s the best person I’ve met in my life."

While fans may feel the couple's relationship moved quickly, Cameron said she bonded with David over having been "very harmed in the past" and feeling like "very sensitive people."

The two musicians got to know each other in a "very slow, cautious" manner throughout that night before getting flirty. "I remember I was fascinated because he presents in a way that seems very easily digestible and then you spend two minutes around him and you realize he is the kindest, most generous, most innocent, most giving person. He’s just a beautiful, sensitive soul," said Cameron.

Dating rumors were first sparked for the pair after Cameron was spotted at Måneskin's MSG show, which came a few months after David confirmed his split from ex-girlfriend Giorgia Soleri.

The "Breakfast" singer attended another one of the band's shows in November 2023, and the pair was then spotted kissing at Bondi Beach in Australia later that month. They made their red carpet debut as a couple at Clive Davis' annual Pre-Grammy Gala in February, went Instagram official the same month and walked the Met Gala carpet together in May.
