Family Went to Clean Out Home After Man’s Death. Then They Found Human Remains in the Basement: 'Scary'

Police are investigating after human remains were discovered in a Chicago home on Monday morning, days after the homeowner was found dead at the same address, authorities said.

The gruesome discovery was made around 11:15 a.m. local time at a home located on the 2800 block of West Fitch Avenue, according to police.

Though police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office have not identified the remains at this time, CBS affiliate WBBM reported that family members discovered the body on Monday, days after the homeowner was found dead inside the home on Friday.

The medical examiner's office told PEOPLE Tuesday that the homeowner was identified as Gerald Harris. The agency reported that he died of natural heart-related causes and that his date of death was recorded as Feb. 3, although neighbors believed he could have been dead for months, according to ABC affiliate WLS.

Relatives found the human remains on Monday as family members were putting stuff away and cleaning the home, according to WBBM-TV. They then called 911. 

The remains were found in the home's basement, according to WLS and WBBM.

Police have not shared any information on how long the remains may have been inside the home or what condition they were found in, per WLS.

Neighbors told the outlet they thought the homeowner lived alone and that he was often seen sitting in his car. 

"We didn't have a close relationship, but he liked to sit out in his car and read the newspaper and when we would pass by he liked to talk," neighbor Bobbie Nussbaum told the outlet.

"The homeowner never mentioned anyone living with him," neighbor Larry Baer said while speaking with WFLD.

On Friday, when they discovered the homeowner had died, family members said they had not seen or heard from him in some time.

"I can only imagine that they are completely shocked," Baer told WFLD of the family.

"I've walked past this house so many times, and you know, I wouldn't have even known at all," Alana Wakschlad, another neighbor, told WBBM. "It's kind of scary, honestly."

Police confirmed with PEOPLE Tuesday that an investigation is still ongoing and no other details are available at this time.
