Bill Murray Celebrates Mark Twain Prize (and Chicago Cubs Win!): 'If They Hadn't Won Last Night I Would Have Had to Have Been There'

Bill Murray‘s trophy closet keeps expanding.

On Sunday, the 66-year-old comedian received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Although there was some worry that the legendary comedian may skip the ceremony in favor of watching his beloved Chicago Cubs, the baseball team clinched the pennant from the Los Angeles Dodgers in game six of the series on Saturday.

“I’m glad they won last night so I could be here this evening,” Murray said of the win, according to the New York Times. “If they hadn’t won last night I would have had to have been there, because, honestly, I do not trust the media to report the story.”

In true Murray fashion, the comedic actor sat perched in a box seat for hours enjoying the tributes and shouting “More!” the Times reports. He received tributes from Hollywood A-listers like Steve Martin, Jimmy Kimmel and Emma Stone.

“Bill Murray could shove you over the side of the Hoover Dam, and you’d be like, ‘Hey, Bill Murray!’ ” said Kimmel.

And Martin quipped: “You and I were as close as two people can be, considering one of them is you.”

The night took a turn for the serious, though, when Murray paid tribute to his older brother Brian Doyle-Murray, according to USA Today.

“My brother had more guts than anyone I ever knew, and the only reason I’m here tonight is because of the guts of my brother Brian,” Murray said. “He’s been waiting a long time to hear that.”

Murray previously won a Golden Globe for his acting in the 2003 film Lost in Translation, for which he was also nominated for an Oscar. He’s also won multiple Emmy awards.

The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor has been awarded annually since 1998. Last year, Eddie Murphy accepted the honor by cracking a few jokes, of course, with his much-talked about Bill Cosby impression, who took home the prize in 2009.

Murphy said he was honored to receive an award that has been taken home by his “heroes.”

“It’s a wonderful thing to be included with some of my heroes – Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Carl Reiner, Lily Tomlin, who else? Bill, Bill has one of these,” Murphy said as the audience erupted in laughter, asking if Cosby was asked to “give his back?”

Murphy then launched into his best Cosby impression: “I would like to talk to, some of the people, who feel that I should give back my m—–f—– trophy.”

Previous recipients also include Tina Fey (2010), Will Ferrell (2011) and Ellen DeGeneres (2012).
