'The Baby-Sitters Club' 20 Years Later: Where Are They Now?

It was 20 years ago this week that the Baby-Sitters Club movie brought to the big screen all the themes that made Ann M. Martin’s books beloved among the pre-teen set: love, friendship, responsibility and child-watching, of course.

In one of the best examples ever of boy movies versus girl movies, the film opened the same weekend as Mortal Kombat. The latter came out on top, but lovers of teen films should recognize that The Baby-Sitters Club movie is a good film. It’s about growing up, making friends and maintaining those friendships in spite of everything else dramatic that’s happening in your life. That’s actually a great lesson to impart to young viewers.

The young women who played the members of the titular club have gone on to do interesting things in the past 20 years. Here’s your update on their activities over the past two decades.

Kristy Thomas (Schuyler Fisk)

Type-A tomboy Kristy was played by Fisk, the daughter of Sissy Spacek and production designer Jack Fisk. Now 33, Fisk made her major film debut in The Baby-Sitters Club and has continued to act, appearing in 2000’s Snow Day and as Colin Hanks’ love interest in 2002’s Orange County. In addition to acting, Fisk also has a career as a folk singer, having released two studio albums and three EPs.

In 2012, Fisk married production designer Chapman Bullock.

Mary Anne Spier (Rachael Leigh Cook)

Cook, who played smart-but-shy Mary Anne, has had perhaps the biggest career of all the Baby-Sitters Club alumnae. After making her acting debut in the film, Cook had a recurring role on Dawson’s Creek in 1999 – playing the character inspired by Joey in Dawson’s film – and then starred in the teen romance She’s All That. Cook also starred in Josie and the Pussycats, Antitrust and Nancy Drew.

Cook, now 35, married Vampire Diaries actor Daniel Gillies in 2004. She gave birth to her first child, Charlotte Easton Gillies, in September 2013, and a son, Theodore Vigo Sullivan Gillies, in April 2015.

Dawn Schafer (Larisa Oleynik)

Of all the actresses to appear in The Baby-Sitters Club, Oleynik might have been the best-known when the movie first hit theaters: She starred in the Nickelodeon series The Secret World of Alex Mack, which had debuted the previous October.

Oleynik, now 34, would go on to play the girlfriend of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character on 3rd Rock from the Sun and Ken Cosgrove’s wife on Mad Men, where she was almost unrecognizable with big ’60s hair. (Oleynik was just one of many ’90s actors to appear in supporting roles on the AMC series.) Of course, Oleynik also starred in 1999’s teen classic 10 Things I Hate About You.

Claudia Kishi (Tricia Joe)

Joe, who played fashion maven Claudia, quit acting after The Baby-Sitters Club, having appeared in only two other works beforehand. According to her Facebook page, Joe, now 37, earned a degree in dance from Fullerton College in 1999.

Stacey McGill (Bre Blair)

Sophisticated big-city girl Stacey was played by Bre Blair, who has appeared in a handful of movies since and has had an extension television career, appearing on CSI, Nip/Tuck, The O.C., Grey’s Anatomy, Brothers & Sisters, 90210 and, most recently The Flash. Now 35, Blair is next scheduled to appear on the upcoming NBC series Game of Silence.

Mallory Pike (Stacy Linn Ramsower)

Ramsower had a big year in 1995: Not only did she star as bookish Mallory in The Baby-Sitters Club, but she also appeared in the post-apocalyptic comic book adaptation Tank Girl as well as the western The Quick and the Dead, in which she played the younger version of Sharon Stone’s character. Beyond 1995, however, Ramsower has only one minor movie credit, and it seems she left show business for a career as a yoga instructor in Houston, Texas.

Jessi Ramsay (Zelda Harris)

Of the young actresses in The Baby-Sitters Club, Harris had one of the higher-profile movie careers beforehand. She’d previously starred in Spike Lee’s 1994 film Crooklyn and subsequently appeared in Lee’s 1998 film He Got Game. Harris would go on to graduate from Princeton in 2007.

In a 2005 interview, Harris said she had grown tired of the parts she, as a black actress, was being called in to audition for: “Female crooks and prostitutes between the ages of 15 and 17 who may or may not be pregnant, may or may not have been involved in a robbery, and who are probably meeting their father for the first time.” In the same interview, she cited music and science as passions she had in addition to acting.

Cokie Mason (Marla Sokoloff)

Importantly, Sokoloff’s character was not part of the Baby-Sitters’ Club. Cokie served as an antagonist for the club members, and Sokoloff had the mean-girl cred for the role: She’d previously played Gia, Stephanie Tanner’s bully-turned-buddy on Full House. Since, Sokoloff has appeared in Dude, Where’s My Car? as well as on The Practice, Burn Notice, Melissa & Joey and Grey’s Anatomy.

Sokoloff, now 34, married musician Alec Puro in 2009. They have two daughters, Elliotte Anne (born in February 2012) and Olive Mae (born in March 2015). Sokoloff has also blogged about parenting for PEOPLE. In 2013, she interviewed fellow Baby-Sitters Club star Rachael Leigh Cook about motherhood.
