Look of the Week: Olivia Palermo's Mint-and-Petal Makeup Could Not Be Any Spring-ier

On the red carpet (if not on the thermostat in N.Y.C.), spring is here. Just check out street-style star Olivia Palermo’s latest makeup move, one that can only be described as an ode to the colorful season, for the Montblanc 110-Year anniversary gala dinner in N.Y.C. earlier this week. The trendsetter paired a minty green eye shadow with a petal pink pout, with help from celebrity makeup artist Quinn Murphy, giving us one more reason to get excited for the season. Here, the makeup pro breaks down the star’s beauty look, and explains why you shouldn’t be scared of going green this spring.

“Olivia said she was going to wear black and probably a pantsuit, so I knew we had the opportunity to do something fun with the makeup,” Murphy tells PeopleStyle of the inspiration behind the bold, seasonal makeup moment. “I was inspired by spring and wanted something fresh — not the smoky eye or bold lip that we’ve been seeing a lot of — so I suggested we do a pigment and asked how she felt about the green. She was into it.”

To get the saturated-but-pale green shadow look, Murphy first covered a light concealer over Palermo’s lids as a base to “really make the pigment pop,” and then, once dry, applied two layers of loose pigment (by M.A.C Cosmetics in a sold-out shade called Spiritualize) with a wet brush to “really activate” the bright hue and create a “high reflection.”

Once the green was set, the makeup pro lined Palermo’s top and bottom lash lines with a black eyeliner (Olivia Palermo x Ciaté London Smoked Out Gel Kohl Liner, of course) to “anchor the strong green color.”

For those who’d love to mimic’s Palermo’s springtime shadow look, Murphy says you shouldn’t be intimidated by the bright hue, as it’s a surprising shade that pairs well with just about every skin tone. “Green is actually a forgiving color on the eyes,” he tells PeopleStyle. “Blondes look great in green, as do ladies with darker skin.” But you have to find a shade that you’re crazy about: “It’s about finding your hue. Look at the undertone, which could be mint, pine, smoky or apple. There are many options.”

As for the lips, Murphy opted for a complementary color, a pale pink (M.A.C Cosmetics Lipstick in Snob), which, he says, is “still soft and not off-putting” when paired with the mint green shadow. But, the makeup pro says, you can pair any lip color with green shadow, as there are “no rules” in beauty.

“I chose pink because it’s soft but opposite of green, so they both pop more,” Murphy tells PeopleStyle. “Green eyes and red lips is a very exciting [look] in a Helmut Newton way. Nude is good for beginners who want to try it out.”
