Industry Leading Security Features
Messages are stored on Proton Mail servers using end-to-end encryption at all times and are transmitted securely between Proton servers and user devices. This largely eliminates the risk of message interception.

Zero Access to Your Email Content
Proton Mail's zero access architecture means that your data is encrypted in a way that makes it inaccessible to us. Data is encrypted on the client side using an encryption key that Proton does not have access to. This means we don't have the technical ability to decrypt your messages.

Open-Source Cryptography
Proton Mail's open-source software has been thoroughly vetted by security experts from around the world to ensure the highest levels of protection. Proton Mail only uses secure implementations of AES, RSA, along with OpenPGP, while all of the cryptographic libraries used are open source. By using open-source libraries, Proton Mail can guarantee that the encryption algorithms used do not have clandestinely built-in back doors.

Proton Mail in the press:

“Proton Mail is an email system which uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for outside parties to monitor.” Forbes

“A new email service being developed by a group from MIT that met at CERN promises to bring secure, encrypted email to the masses and keep sensitive information away from prying eyes.” Huffington Post

The new update is definitely an improvement, especially with stability. I'm no longer having a problem with the app locking up if I try to open it by clicking on a new message notification. Problems: the app's status updates appear on top of the buttons in certain views, so I have to wait; swipe to delete isn't reliable; labeling a message while it's open seems archive it when I don't want it to; if wrong PIN is entered, user has no choice but to clear it MANUALLY.

Thank you for sharing your feedback on this with us, Michael! We've passed it along to our team internally, to help prioritize future improvements to our rewritten app.

I am always pleased with the app. There are frequent improvement updates, and they respond quickly to questions, problems, and suggestions. I have never had such a wonderful experience with any other application! Most other apps don't respond to suggestions or problems. Thank you! 😊 I feel great about the privacy and safety of the app as well. End to end encryption is very important in our ever shrinking world of privacy. Our freedoms are under attack. The VPN & email are needed.

Love this app very much, but hate the latest update because it no longer allows me to select a certain notification sound for just this app. That needs to be brought back because I have separate notification sounds for each app so that I know which one is alerting me before I look at my phone. All I would ask is to bring back that feature. That one feature is a very important feature to me.
