Unreliable wireless sensor is the achilles heel

Unreliable wireless sensor is the achilles heel
From my experience here are my pros and cons.Pros:Solid connectivity and control via app.Cons:Substandard wireless sensor in terms of construction, design, and actual working function.Bad sensor results in wrong garage status being displayed - says garage door is open when it is not and vice versa.Sensor installation does not work right out of the box.Review:The installation of the garage portion was as expected with the level of difficulty/effort required. The sensor is the main culprit of why I would not recommend this to anyone who cares about the open/close status of their garage door. If you need this function look elsewhere otherwise get a workaround like a camera for the garage door or a backup solution like another brand as a failover that would also show the status of the garage. The sensor is badly constructed.1. Strong velcro on the back of cheap plastic with a battery door may result in the casing being destroyed or at least the pieces separate with a pull if one just yanks the velcro to remove it to change the battery. You'll have to do this with care. The plastic holding it together is poorly made with a lack of enough tolerances.2. Placing the battery inside is challenging because one of the metal contact tabs that touches the battery is not solidly designed in place. The contact tab is very loose, moves while you are inserting or taking out the battery, and may rip away from the circuit board. This movement can make the tab miss one side of the battery, resulting in the user trying many times and weakening the tab connection to the circuit board. There is not enough solder there and the design does not have enough support to hold it in place as batteries are being removed or put into the unit. This also would result in unstable power from the battery itself, creating an unreliable sensor.3. In order to save on battery, the sensor only broadcasts the door status once. This is often missed by the receiver and does not trigger the status to change to open or closed. They should at least allow the transmitter to transmit the status again a few times and / or be able to have the garage controller ping the sensor for the garage status. This should have been part of the design.4. The small ballbearing unit which is part of the circuit componentry is what tells the sensor whether the door is open or closed. This component is unreliable because the ball inside may get stuck and not change the state to trigger the sensor to transmit.5. Also, the instructions say to avoid placing the sensor on a metal surface. They say this is because metal may shield its communication with the garage sensor. I also think this might be because the metal ballbearing tilt sensor component could get magnetized and get stuck at a certain state. One workaround could be to place a small magnet in front of the sensor just strong enough to dislodge a stuck tilt sensor with the help of gravity and motion of the garage as it changes state.6. If you try to improve the sensor by re-soldering the battery tabs, etc you have to be extra careful with the delicate plastic housing which does not quite hold together.I have not purchased the wired sensor because it required relocating the garage controller away from our wall and onto the garage motor unit area because the wired sensor needs it to be there for the length of wire needed to reach it. This would take more work to address the shortcomings of the unacceptable wireless sensor. This product can be so much better if they made a battery wireless sensor that is better contructed from the ground up. Other brands on Amazon have better sensors which also can be purchased separately but are unfortunately not compatible with this. All in all, this can be used as a failover for another garage opener but I would not recommend it as the primary one.

This is my second Nexx product. I have two separate garage doors. About a year ago I installed the earlier version of this device (100 series) and just today I installed the latest version. (200 series).

Installation: The 200 series was much easier to install. From start to finish it took me about 30 minutes. That includes getting a ladder and completing the job. The instructions are simple to follow and very clear. Keep in mind I already had the app installed on my phone and one device already working. What I especially like about this latest version is the door sensor. Since it is wireless it took less than a minute to Velcro it to the door. The earlier version of this device and other devices like it has a hardwired connection. Although it’s not hard to install it just takes an extra 15 minutes or so to install the sensor onto the door and wall. You also have to tidy up the wire run along the door rail. The 100 version use that method. It works but it just took longer to install.

Ease-of-use: I like the Nexx app. It is very user-friendly and easy to set up. You can set up the door to open based off location, date and time, etc. Very simple to set up. I have a habit of leaving my garage door open and forgetting about it so I like the ability to have it closed or ensure it is closed at a certain time each night.

I bought a similar device for my mother-in-law for Christmas this past year. I Purchased it from Amazon but thought it was the exact device I already had in my home. However after installing it I realized it used a different application. The hardware look pretty much the same but the app was totally different and nowhere near as user-friendly as Nexx.

I highly recommend Nexx over other devices you may see out there. Again, it was so simple to install and it works great. You will not be disappointed. It does work well with Alexa as well but that is more of a novelty to me. I find it handy to check the status of my door anywhere in the world and to open it from anywhere in the world as well. I’ve had to open my garage door for the neighbor a few times remotely and it works great.

Finally, I found a garage app/opener that I can use to open my garage door from anywhere. I was so excited to use and it worked for a couple days until I started having to reset it every couple of days. Then I would have to reset it every other day until I would have to reset it everyday. So often that I would get locked out of my condo garage have to hop the fence to get to my front door.

To make matters worse, the Customer service agent, Alex, is the most condescending person I have ever messaged. He never addressed my problem directly but just copied and pasted jargon into the email. I tried every single solution including “shaking and tapping the sensor” “attaching sensor near the top of garage” “attaching near the bottom” “putting a pad between sensor and garage door” “changing the battery” it would work for a day or two but then back to the same old nonsense. Alex had the nerve to tell to go back and “read instructions slower because previous customers miss the instructions from reading too fast.” I told him how rude he was being and he never responded to me again.

I would caution anyone from buying this product actually I would just stay away and if you need help, you won’t get it from Alex.

This is a nice device for remotely controlling and monitoring your garage door. I purchased the latest version which has the separate monitoring sensor that attaches direct to the G-door itself. It has an accelerometer like the ones in smart phones and video game controllers which determines if the G-door is moving. Once the door is in motion, a message can appear on your smart phone if you set up that way. The main unit is mounted close to the G-door opener/motor. Set up is easy and here are a few tips: test it by using the supplied piece of insulated wiring to jump the two electrical contacts (screws) that close the circuit on the G-door opener. If it will open/close the door, you're in business. Be sure to do any/all firmware updates AFTER you establish a Wi-Fi connection between the Nexx unit and your home network. SPECIAL NOTE to iPhone users: iOS 13-and-up will not allow firmware updates direct through the phone (for security reasons) so you have to use the Nexx unit as your Wi-Fi internet connection. It seems strange but you just use your phone and connect to the Nexx that shows up in your iPhone's available Wi-Fi networks instead of your home Wi-Fi network; you do this when you have the Nexx website open on your phone. This allows the Nexx unit to run updates & bug fixes. Once you get the updates done, you're ready to mount the unit. You'll need an AC electrical outlet somewhere near the G-door opener and since you have to have one for the opener anyway, you should already have an outlet available. Before mounting, make sure you get a strong enough Wi-Fi signal to the Nexx unit. The Nexx app you previously downloaded will tell you if its getting a good signal from the garage. If your phone shows a good signal, then the app should too. The Nexx unit has a movable antenna you can adjust if necessary.

This Nexx version works with Alexa and Siri but at this time not with Apple's Home Kit. Maybe a future update will include it as well. One nice trick I use with Siri is the Shortcuts feature in iOS 13.1. If you have an iPhone 10 or higher, your phone can utilize the NFC app built into the phone for other purposes other than just Apple Pay. I programmed my phone to use the Siri-Shortcut to close my G-door when tapping a NFC tag I have mounted outside the garage. This allows me to close the G-door without having to open the Nexx app or use another opener in my car or house. It's practical and convenient for me because my garage is not attached to my house and sometimes I want to close the door without having to turn off my house alarm system and I'm on foot.

As for security, I haven't seen anything unusual so far. But IoT devices have a bad reputation for not being secure. If your Wi-Fi network is secure, then this should be as well. One feature which could be weak spot is the BT connection that the app can use if your Wi-Fi is down. It allows a direct Bluetooth connection to the Nexx unit but this feature is only as secure as your phone. BT has limited range so remote access is unlikely. You can disable this feature in the app.

For the most part it gives you exactly what you expect, the Siri voice activate option doesn’t always work but not huge priority for me. All in all for the price I am extremely happy with this device, bought second one for my other garage. Set up easier than I thought, just ensure your garage system is comparable with Nexx.

Received this in Canada very fast but needed the adapter which took twice as long to get and had to pay shipping from the US. Real easy to install, works with my Alexa mini and phone. The auto open is a neat feature which you need the app open on your iPhone to work.

Despite their product description, this does NOT work with Alexa in Canada. Their support is it's possible they may offer it outside of the US, but it'll take time, and they're not sure they're actually going to do it. Still selling it on Amazon.ca saying it will in fact work with Alexa, but it DOESN'T.

The product did exactly as advertised - works well with my liftmaster door opener and wifi and connects perfectly to my iphone
I never had to contact support so did give them a rating - I used youtube to watch multiple installations.
My one disappointment was that Nexx offered a deal with a Nexx plug that Amazon did not - had I known this I would have ordered direct from Nexx - I did not find out about this until after I had ordered.
One thing to keep in mind is to update the firmware before install -
