Server internet connection is slower than 2G networks

Check the attached screenshot; why singapore server instances are very slow, just like using a dial-up connection? Is this how AWS connection works?

  1. Network speed depends on the Instance type. The more powerful and expensive the instance, the higher the network performance. (https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/instance-types/) . But anyway, the cheapest instance type should give ~20-30 Mbit/sec
  2. The next question is how your internet connection is configured (Internet Gateway, NAT Gateway, some other point). The reason for slow internet connection may be on that device (overloaded or incorrectly configured)
  3. Some other services on your EC2 instance are heavily using a network. It can be an internet connection, internal network connection, or even heavy-use disk, because EBS is also network connected disk
  4. The issue may be with the target resource (it seems to be some Ubuntu repositories). Have you tested other targets? Maybe using tools like "speedtest"

  • Technically, i just launched the instance which was from Singapore location, all I did was "sudo apt-get upgrade" the packages were upgrading, you can see the download speed, its pretty low when compared with general server speed.

I was wondering whats wrong with AWS singapore servers.

  • I guess you need AWS Technical Support in this case. Maybe there are some issues with AWS Region or AZ
