Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon
HBO

Big spoilers ahead for The House of the Dragon. If you can’t wait for the next episode of the Game of Thrones spinoff, you might be inching to know if Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) really survives his injuries after his gigantic battle with Rhaenys.

Rhaenys (Eve Best) volunteers herself and her dragon Meleys to fight Aegon on behalf of Team Black and for Rhaenhyra. Aegon mounts his dragon Sunfyre who is pretty inexperienced in fighting. The two clash in the air and it seems like Rhaenys and Meleys are having the upper hand when Aemond and his veteran dragon Vhagar, who is the biggest and oldest of the land approaches and attacks Rhaenys.

Aemond’s whole plan beforehand was to attach Rhaenys herself, so he wants to take things on his own hands. “Aegon is very brash and lacks perseverance to be king,” Ewan Mitchell told Comic Book Resources about how his character Aemond feels about Aegon’s ruling. “Aegon kind of squandered his inheritance and even said he didn’t want to be king.”

Aegon falls with Sunfyre and Rhaenys narrowly escapes with Meleys. In a moment of brief peace, Aemond and Vhagar give the final blow to Rhaenys and Meleys to kill them. Aegon’s fate is still up in the air.

Does Aegon die in House of the Dragon?

The shocking cliffhanger Aegon seems to have life-threatening injuries at the end of the episode. Aemond points to the motionless Aegon after Criston Cole asks, “Where’s his Grace?”

In the book, Aegon doesn’t succumb to his injuries. However, those injuries caused him to be bedridden for at least a year. He refused to see anyone except for Alicent and Criston. He actually dies by poison in Fire & Blood after Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake, makes a plea to Aegon to surrender his crown. It was never confirmed who poisoned him.

And so what happens after Aegon dies? He is succeeded by his nephew Aegon III, but beforehand he cuts his ear off as a reminder of his bloodline.

House of the Dragon airs on Max on Sundays at 9 p.m.
