William Bowery is an anonymous pseudonym used by Joe Alwyn to co-write songs on folklore, evermore, and Midnights, including "exile", "betty", "champagne problems", "coney Island", the title track "evermore", and “Sweet Nothing”. He also wrote the piano chords for "exile". No one knew who he was until Taylor Swift revealed Bowery’s true identity to be Alwyn during her Disney+ special, Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions. Aaron Dessner, who co-produced the albums, also had no clue as to who this mysterious person was.

Name[]

Many fans quickly came up with the theory that the pseudonym William Bowery refers to Alwyn. The name of Alwyn's great grandfather was William Alwyn, who also happened to be a musician. Bowery would refer to the Bowery Hotel, where Alwyn and Swift were spotted around the time they started dating.
