13. Staring down the barrel of a gun (Dear White People)

Dear White People Season 1 Episode 5 Reggie Gun

Dear White People Season 1 Episode 5 features a scene that captivated my attention and soul. We see Reggie code switching and being able to find connection with peers of different racial identities. But then, a disagreement over the use of the n-word comes up and a party scene escalates to a deadly situation.

Reggie, frozen and staring down the barrel of a white police officer’s gun, is a moment in TV that I will never forget. The acting, music and cinematography combine to cause quakes in the viewer’s perspective on police brutality and racial violence. This moment in TV has the power to create avenues of empathy the divided United States sorely needed in 2017.

14. Sexual Harrassment (Great News)

For me, the most memorable moment of 2017 was when Great News managed to air its sexual harassment episode during the same week that the news about Harvey Weinstein broke.

Watching Tina Fey’s Diana St. Tropez making bizarre demands of her male staff members while the women scoffed at their complaints was too perfect. And the reason for her inappropriate behavior was so brilliant, I won’t dare spoil it for you. You’ll have to go back and watch. Sadly, this plotline is still just as timely.

15. Wynonna’s Vision Quest (Wynonna Earp)

This past season of Wynonna Earp is memorable in and of itself, but Wynonna Earp Season 2 Episode 8, “No Future in the Past,” has my most memorable moment from this year.

Wynonna’s vision’s quest is amazing for so many reasons. It is a master class on backstory, and it completely changed the way we looked at Bobo and the events of season one. It’s impressive to have a show completely take the rug out from under you like that, and it’s one of my favorite episodes of 2017.

Michael Eklund’s delivery of “I’m a good man” is devastatingly heartbreaking in the best possible way.

16. There’s a lady Doctor now! (Doctor Who)

doctor who thirteen first words

Doctor Who fans have waited 54 years for this moment and we’ve known it was coming for months.

Still, when Peter Capaldi delivered that last heartfelt (fantastic) speech, glowed, and turned into Jodie Whittaker, I cried. (Well, I made a very loud noise first, but then I cried.) The future of the show has never felt so wide open before, and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

17. Coming together (Game of Thrones)

game of thrones

Even though Game of Thrones is suddenly moving very quickly and characters are able to appear in faraway lands in a matter of hours, I have loved seeing all of the reunions with characters.

Some haven’t seen each other since the series began, others have not even met but know each other by name or reputation. To see all the Starks together again as well as having Jon Snow and Dany meet for the first time, was indeed memorable. And then, to see all of the characters (Cersei, Tyrion, Jamie, Jon, Dany, etc.) together in one scene–amazing!

18. Origin Story (Twin Peaks: The Return)

While the episode sets itself apart from the season in tone and execution, Twin Peaks: The Return Season 1 Episode 8 seems to play like Laura and Bob’s origin story—the creation of good and evil, and of the Twin Peaks universe itself.

The appearance of their faces during the otherworldly events was shocking, but made so much sense. Laura Palmer’s struggle with Bob from the original run of the show is given more meaning—a deeper meaning—one that was set in motion decades before the Laura we know was even born.
