Welcome to a new week and another round of What to Watch on TV for the week of January 23rd! We’ll be sharing our picks for what to watch this week, from marathons to big guest spots, and significant episodes of TV to look forward to.

This week’s picks include the premiere of The Afterparty, the return of Snowpiercer, Season 2 of Resident Alien, and more.

Here are our recommendations for what to watch on TV this week:

Billions – Sunday, January 23

With Mike Prince and Chuck Rhoades on a collision course, alliances will be forged, broken, and tested this season. Billions returns with Season 6 on Sunday, January 23 at 9/8c on Showtime.

Episode description: Prince revamps the team in his image with mixed results. Chuck clears his head upstate, leading a crusade against a local blue blood. Meanwhile, Wags, Wendy and Taylor try to wrap their heads around their new positions.

Downton Abby fans rejoice! Julian Fellowes is back with a new period drama. This time Fellowes will take on the tumultuous post-Civil War era in the US known as the Gilded age for its unprecedented economic growth, greed, and corruption. The Gilded Age premieres Monday, January 24 at 9/8c on HBO.

Series description: The American Gilded Age was a period of immense economic change, of great conflict between the old ways and brand new systems, and of huge fortunes made and lost. Against the backdrop of this transformation, HBO’s The Gilded Age begins in 1882 with young Marian Brook (Jacobson) moving from rural Pennsylvania to New York City after the death of her father to live with her thoroughly old money aunts Agnes van Rhijn (Baranski) and Ada Brook (Nixon). Accompanied by Peggy Scott (Benton), an aspiring writer seeking a fresh start, Marian inadvertently becomes enmeshed in a social war between one of her aunts, a scion of the old money set, and her stupendously rich neighbors, a ruthless railroad tycoon and his ambitious wife, George (Spector) and Bertha Russell (Coon). Exposed to a world on the brink of the modern age, will Marian follow the established rules of society, or forge her own path?

Snowpiercer – Monday, January 24

TNT’s post-apocalyptic drama is back for a third season. Layton and his inner circle continue to look for Melanie as Season 3 begins, but new hope emerges in the form of another unexpected survivor. Meanwhile, Wilford continues to consolidate his power aboard Snowpiercer, setting up another showdown between him and the original Snowpiercer crew. Snowpiercer returns Monday, January 24 at 9/8c on TNT.

Episode description: While Wilford emphasizes his rule, Layton’s pirate train continues its dangerous quest.

Promised Land – Monday, January 24

ABC’s new drama will introduce viewers to the Sandoval family, owners of a successful Sonoma wine business, as they try to protect their company and family from hostile players and hidden secrets. Promised Land premieres Monday, January 25 at 10/9c on ABC.

Series description: Promised Land is an epic, generation-spanning drama about a Latinx family vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley.

Resident Alien – Wednesday, January 26

Harry is back but his memories are not when Resident Alien returns for its sophomore season. Resident Alien returns Wednesday, January 26 at 9/8c on SYFY.

Episode description: Harry the alien is back on Earth and doesn/t remember who he is, and only Asta can keep him safe.

Astrid & Lily Save the World – Wednesday, January 26

Unlikely heroes make their debut on SYFY’s new series, Astrid and Lilly Save The World. High school outsiders, Astrid and Lilly, are pulled into a world of monsters and magic after accidentally opening a portal to another dimension. Now they are the only ones who can close it and save everyone. Astrid And Lilly Save The World premieres Wednesday, January 26 at 10/9c on SYFY.

Series description: High school is hard enough when you’re different, but when outcast BFFs Astrid (Jana Morrison) and Lilly (Samantha Aucoin) accidentally crack open a portal to a terrifyingly quirky monster dimension, it gets a lot more complicated. It’s up to them to vanquish the creepy creatures and save the world, becoming the badass heroes they were meant to be. That is, if they can survive the horrors of high school.

Chosen – Thursday, January 27

Netflix continues its showcase of international television, this time with the Dutch sci-fi series, Chosen. After looking into what she believes are PR motivated lies about a meteor that crashed in her town years ago, Dutch teen Emma unravels a mystery that will change her world forever. Chosen premieres Thursday, January 27 on Netflix.

Series description: A teenager finds her world turned upside down when she discovers the disturbing truth lurking in her sleepy Danish town.

The Afterparty – Friday, January 28

On the heels of Only Murders In The Buildings, Apple TV+ is out with a murder mystery dramedy of its own. The Afterparty, which has a fantastic cast led by Tiffany Haddish, changes the formula with its Rashomon style format that retells the story from a different point of view each week. The Afterparty premieres Friday, January 28 on Apple TV+.

Series description: The Afterparty centers on a murder mystery at a high school reunion. Each of the eight episodes features a retelling of the same night told through a different character’s perspective, each with its own unique visual style and film genre to match the teller’s personality

After starting as a 2019 Kickstarter campaign, the animated adaptation of the wildly popular D&D web series, Critical Role, is hitting TV screens this week. Joining the original cast on this adaptation of the web series’s first campaign are some pretty heavy hitters, including Stephanie Beatriz, David Tennant, and Tony Hale, among others. The Legend of Vox Machina premieres Friday, January 28 on Amazon Prime.

Series description: Based on the beloved characters and adventures of Critical Role’s first livestreamed tabletop role-playing game (RPG) campaign, The Legend of Vox Machina is an animated fantasy-adventure series for adults that follows Vox Machina, a band of misfits with a fondness for boozing and brawling. In a desperate attempt to pay off their mounting bar tab, these unlikely heroes end up on a quest to save the realm of Exandria from dark magical forces. From a sinister necromancer to a powerful curse, the group confronts a variety of obstacles that not only test their skills, but also the strength of their bond.

An ex-Russian spy is dragged back into a world she thought she left behind in this new thriller. In From the Cold premieres Friday, January 28 on Netflix.

Series description: Exposed as an ex-Russian spy, an American single mom must juggle family life and unique shape-shifting skills in a battle against an insidious enemy.
