All American, Riverdale, and The Flash Among 7 TV Series Renewed at The CW
Let the celebration commence!
It was announced Tuesday The CW has officially renewed seven series for the 2022-2023 TV season, including All American (for Season 5), Riverdale (for Season 7), Nancy Drew (for Season 4), The Flash (for Season 9), Superman & Lois (for Season 3), Kung Fu (for Season 3), and Walker (for Season 3).
While this announcement still qualifies as the network’s typical slew of early-renewal news, it does mark the latest of its kind in The CW’s history.
For comparison, 2019, 2020, and 2021 all had an early wave of scripted pickups by February, unlike 2022’s late March.
Fans of the network will also notice the volume of renewals has decreased significantly from previous years.
Traditionally known for renewing almost its entire primetime slate, there is a handful of currently airing shows missing from the list, including (but certainly not limited to) Legacies, Roswell, New Mexico, and the long-running superhero series Legends of Tomorrow.
Paramount and WarnerMedia — The CW’s corporate parents — are the reason for the “delay,” as they potentially look into a sale for the network.
According to TVLine, if the sale goes through, the new owners will inevitably shake up the current programming structure, leaving many beloved The CW series in limbo or at risk for cancelation entirely.
If those shows “on the bubble” do manage to survive, there is still a chance they will find a new home at one of ViacomCBS and WarnerMedia’s respective streaming outlets, Paramount+ or HBO Max.
In his statement, Chairman and CEO, The CW Network, Mark Pedowitz, refrained from addressing the possible sale but did lend supportive words for the series chosen for the 2022 pickup.
“As we prepare for the 2022-23 season, these scripted series, along with the alternative series we renewed earlier, will serve as the start of a solid foundation utilizing some of our most-watched series for us to build on for next year and beyond,” Pedowitz said.
“These dramas are also important to our overall digital strategy, as they are some of our most-streamed and socially-engaged programming, and we look forward to adding more new and returning series to help strengthen and expand our multiplatform footprint,” Pedowitz continued.
What will happen to the seven renewed series past the 2022-2023 year remains to be seen.
