Killing Eve Review: Oh Goodie, I’m The Winner (Season 4 Episode 6)

Killing Eve, Reviews

Killing Eve Season 4 Episode 6, “Oh Goodie, I’m The Winner,” picks up because we are finally back to the relationships the audience has been invested in from the beginning.

I know at this point, these reviews probably sound like a broken record, but it’s true. Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer always deliver great performances, but their characters thrive off of each other’s energy and the disenchanted vibe doesn’t work when they’re apart for this long.

“Oh Goodie, I’m The Winner,” remedies that by putting them in the same room for more than a few moments.

Killing Eve Season 4 has lost its way and forgot that this is a show whose common thread has been about obsession. “Oh Goodie, I’m the Winner” puts that back into focus, bringing us back to this season’s goal: the elimination of The Twelve and how Villanelle and Eve have been drawn to each other.

Eve’s acceptance that maybe she is invested in Villanelle and maybe watching this woman die would affect her is the kind of revelation that Killing Eve needs to explore more in its final episodes. The brief moments where they interact, even if Villanelle is pulling away are some of the most compelling scenes of the episode.

The climactic scene in Helene’s hotel room just cements this further. We see these women choose each other in this moment and align themselves with a like goal. While they’re still not working together, they’ve both killed agents of The Twelve.

Carolyn’s arc on this episode plays an interesting counterpoint to Eve and Villanelle’s. While we should be rejoicing that Eve and Villanelle are actively making progress towards killing The Twelve, Carolyn points out a sobering fact.

Just because they take one out doesn’t mean they’re gone forever.

Season 4 has given us an interesting perspective on Carolyn. Carolyn was introduced in the first season as this mysterious veteran officer, and as we see her grieve and try to get answers about her son’s death we’re starting to also see some regret.

The way she turns to Eve after she kills Lars with a very flat, “Congratulations, you killed one,” is a side of Carolyn we’ve never really seen before. It’s the type of realization when the old agent or officer comes back into the fray and starts to realize that maybe the thing they’ve done their whole lives is meaningless.

Kim Bodnia as Konstantin, Anjana Vasan as Pam – Killing Eve _ Season 4, Episode 6 – Anika Molnar/BBCA

Last, but not least, let’s talk about Pam. I like the idea of Pam, and Pam’s evolution is providing an interesting plot, especially in the way that she differs from Villanelle.

However, she still feels like a side character that is meant to go somewhere else beyond this season. I spoke a little bit before about how Pam feels like a character that’s being developed specifically for a spinoff, and while they’re doing a great job, it’s detracting from the characters we’re already invested in.

Seeing Pam’s hesitation though is an interesting divergence. Villanelle gets a feeling of relief and afterglow once she completes a job. Pam doesn’t, and it could signal that she’s not cut out for this work unless she’s killing “bad” people.

This could be an asset in the final episodes as they close in on The Twelve. Especially if Pam has a motive, but it’s hard to see if this is a plot that’s meant to exist outside of the series or if it’ll ultimately converge.

If Killing Eve can continue on this track for its final two episodes, the series has the potential to end on a high note. The series has always thrived on the relationships between its characters and it needs to do that once again in its swan song.

  • Don’t you think Pam is being groomed to kill one of the major characters before this is over? She’s too new for anyone to care if she chooses to walk away and live a “better” life than an assassin. The first train, a couple of seasons back, was dispensed with by Villanelle, so that can’t be repeated. Pam only reason for being in this season is to do something big by the end. Will it be Eve? Villanelle? Or Konstantin? Methinks Villanelle has fallen (literally) for someone else: Gunn.
