15 TV Characters We’d Love to Go on a Road Trip With

9-1-1, Criminal Minds, Doctor Who, Gilmore Girls, Grey's Anatomy, iCarly, Legends of Tomorrow, Lists, New Girl, Parks and Recreation, Preacher, Teen Wolf

Road trips are some of the best ways to travel. There are always new things to see even before reaching the destination, and you can pack as much as the chosen vehicle will hold. You also must have the right kind of music, travel plan, and of course, the right travel buddy.

Imagine traveling with your favorite TV characters, and how much fun that would be. We can only assume the journey would be legendary.

There are so many characters we’d love to have as travel companions, and it was hard to pick, but we did our best!

Here’s our choice of 15 characters we’d love to go on a road trip with, in no particular order:

1. Nick Miller (New Girl)
New Girl

When we think of lovable and fun characters, it’s not a shock that Nick Miller from New Girl comes to mind. The goofiness, lack of responsibility, overall aloofness, and real-life questions and anxieties only make us relate to him more.

In addition to his funny one-liners, Nick has a wildly creative side (hello Pepperwood Chronicles!) and would be perfect at coming up with road trip games and ways to pass the time during lulls in the journey. He definitely would be adding some spontaneous energy.

Nick is not the most practical nor logistical person, but there would be more exploring and randomness involved on this trip. Since he works as a bartender, his schedule would be flexible enough to really make an adventure.

 2. Spencer Shay (iCarly)
iCarly Season 1 Episode 12 iThrow a Flawless Dinner Party

If you’re looking for another lovable, irresponsible adult who just loves to have a good time, then Spencer Shay from both versions of iCarly should be on your trip.

We can only imagine that his clothing would be exceptional based on his socks alone, and it would be expected that he’d have a wild pair for each stop along the way.

Spencer would also be great as a driver or a passenger. He’s got a consistent flow of energy along with a zany side, and he could essentially go for hours without getting bored.

3. Lorelai Gilmore (Gilmore Girls)

For OG 2000’s television fans like me, there is no question that Gilmore Girls matriarch Lorelai Gilmore would be perfect for any road trip. Just make sure there is plenty of coffee, of course.

Lorelai is a mom, so she knows how to nurture. She also can how cook up a conversation with any person. Her talking skills in terms of speed and stamina never let up and there would be easy entertainment for the duration of the trip.

Also, her snack choices are top-tier. There would be junk food galore and no one would go hungry. Lorelai has an infectious energy, so no matter where the road trip ends up it’s guaranteed to be a good time.

4. The Doctor (Doctor Who)

The Doctor from Doctor Who would be an amazing road trip companion. First off, we’d have the TARDIS, which travels in time. Come on, how cool of a trip would that be?

Plus, the number of times the doctor has “commandeered a vehicle” means that no matter where we go, we would have some kickass ways of traveling.

As a time traveler, we’re sure the knowledge of where to go and what to see would be imminent as well. The Doctor could easily talk about the history of each destination and how it’s changed over the years. There would be no lull and each part from the drive itself to the destination would have a purpose.

5. Peyton Sawyer (One Tree Hill)

We’re throwing it back again to the early 2000’s era for One Tree Hill’s favorite punky, tough girl Peyton Sawyer. Peyton is standoffish at first but is a deep and complex character with lots of emotions to bring to the table.

The main reason we’d want her on our trip though is her taste in music. The playlist or CD mixes would be unmatched. It’s not only her music choices but also her knowledge about bands and songs as well.

Peyton is a bit sassy, but deep down she truly cares for those around her, and we know she’d keep us safe on the road. She is also smart enough to talk herself out of a bad situation if it comes down to that and would keep the tension between passengers low.

6. Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf)

Stiles Stilinski from Teen Wolf would be THE BEST road trip buddy. Between fun snacks and wild stories and his general spazziness, we would be down to go anywhere with him.

He is also loyal and incredibly curious. New places would be fun for him, and his curiosity would only bring up the mood.

Stiles is clever and funny as well as extroverted. He wouldn’t tire easily and would help keep the energy up until it was time to stop. We also think he’d be great at avoiding skeevy hotels.

7. Meredith Grey (Grey’s Anatomy)

Our leading lady from Grey’s Anatomy, Miss Meredith Grey, would be a wonderful combination of level-headedness and a good time, therefore making her an automatic pick to road trip with.

Did we mention she’s a doctor? If there was an emergency along the way, Meredith knows how to take charge without stressing out others and she saves lives! What more do we really need?

In addition to being a badass doctor, Meredith is also a parent, so she knows how to take care of people in multiple ways. She’s well known, rich, and great under pressure and we can’t think of any reason not to have her on the trip.

8. Spencer Reid (Criminal Minds)

Played by the charming and lovable Matthew Gray Gubler, Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds fully makes the road trip invite list. He’s a brainiac and incredibly valuable in terms of knowledge and information.

We know he’s a speed reader, so looking at maps and following directions should be no issue for him. Also, he’s full of fun facts and is always going on fun long-winded tangents.

Spencer’s knack for figuring out clues and puzzles could really turn any road trip experience into a full-on adventure.

9. Alexis Rose (Schitt’s Creek)
Alexis Rose
Alexis Rose – Schitt’s Creek

Our prodigal daughter, Alexis Rose from Schitt’s Creek, is the perfect blend of drama and comedy. She may come off as a bit prissy at first but opens up quite easily. She’d be great on a trip due to her vast array of travel experiences.

It’s super helpful to have someone on the journey who has been to various places and Alexis certainly has plenty of travel stories to share. Whether real or exaggerated, she can talk up a place, no question.

Alexis also cares about appearances, and if documenting the road trip was on the agenda, she’d be the perfect one to ask for the best poses and angles for photos.

10. Evan “Buck” Buckley (911)
9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 14 - Oliver Stark as Evan 'Buck' Buckley

Of course, we have to include an attractive firefighter, and who else but Evan “Buck” Buckley from 9-1-1 fits the bill. Buck is a kid at heart and down for absolutely anything which is the right vibe for these types of trips.

He also naturally likes to take care of people, so he will drive when you want to sleep and make sure everyone is safe throughout the journey.

Before his current job as a firefighter, Evan had jobs in the navy as well as a ranch, so he probably has a bunch of helpful tips and tricks up his sleeve for a seamless adventure. He would know what to do with car trouble and is calm enough to keep everyone else at ease.

11. Tulip O’Hare (Preacher)
Preacher Season 4 Episode 7 - Ruth Negga as Tulip O'Hare

Tulip O’Hare from Preacher is one of those characters who you know is always going to be a chaotic good time. Plus, if we run into trouble, she’s going to have the wits about her to get us out of it. Plus, she’s traveled all over, so she would know the best places to visit.

In addition, Tulip is also expertly skilled in combat, so if there were any dangerous people on the road, she’d be the one we want by our side.

If the road trip somehow turned into a heist, we’d want Tulip on our side. She can steal items with no problem and she’d easily go unnoticed. We know she could take charge and keep everyone safe while still having a kick-ass time.

12. Nate Heywood (Legends of Tomorrow)
Legends of Tomorrow Season 7 Episode 8

A historian and a meta-human, there is no doubt that Nate Heywood from Legends of Tomorrow would bring all the logical tips on a road trip.

He’s incredibly smart and could share information about any city and the important artifacts that are a part of each place. He’s also incredibly strong and resilient, which would be key for a long period of time.

Nathan would be so helpful with luggage and supplies. He’s built and has superpowers, so it would take a lot for him to be worn down which is why we’d love to have him along for the ride.

13. Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation)

It’s no surprise that the Deputy Director of Parks in Pawnee, Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation made our list. She is organized, a bit of an over-achiever, and will do anything for those she cares about.

Leslie Knope would also create great mixtapes, and she’d know all of the best parks or other nature spots to explore throughout the experience.  She’d be super prepared for all aspects of the road trip, and a great leader as well.

She’s probably got a bunch of exciting stories and memories from her career and she would want to share all of them, so she’d have the talking portion covered.

14. Doc Holiday (Wynona Earp)
Wynonna Earp Season 4 Episode 11

Since Doc Holiday from Wynona Earp is from the old west, we can see him being enthralled by the sites but also really confused by things at diners and other modernized places, which would be extremely entertaining. Plus, I am sure his car Charlene would be fun to travel in.

Doc was also trapped in a well for over 100 years, so we’re confident he could withstand a long time in the car. He is protective and would be great at reading a map if modern technology wasn’t doing its job.

He is a character with so much niche life experience and his skills would be super helpful to have along the way.

15. Phoebe Buffay (Friends)
FRIENDS — Season 2 — Pictured: (l-r) Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing, Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, David Schwimmer as Ross Geller, Courteney Cox as Monica Geller, Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay — (Photo by: NBC)

We would be remiss not to include our last pick as eccentric and fun-loving Phoebe Buffay from Friends. She writes her own songs, so free entertainment would be a given.

Also, she’s got her grandmother’s cab, and how cool would it be to travel around in a vintage car. Phoebe also says the craziest things, and we believe there would never be a dull moment with her by our side.

Phoebe seems to also have endless stamina. She is always full of high energy and could take over the driving when anyone else gets sleepy. Her humor is top-notch and we don’t doubt that she’ll end up having a story for any place you’d go.
