Girls5Eva Review: Leave a Message If You Love Me (Season 2 Episode 5)

Girls5Eva, Reviews

If you now can’t get “Leave a Message If You Love Me” out of your head, then you are not alone.

Girls5Eva Season 2 Episode 5, “Leave a Message If You Love Me,” gives us some of the show’s catchiest songs yet. Every song on this episode could be on heavy radio rotation, despite some of their silly lyrics.

However, “Leave a Message If You Love Me” reaches new territory for the Peacock original. It’s a heartfelt ballad to Ashley that feels sincere with a touch of insanity — “so much cocaine” is a nice reminder that this is still a comedy.

The episode helps clarify whether Ashley is really alive or if Gloria just cannot let go. “Leave a Message If You Love Me” goes with the latter option, but the possibility of Ashley’s return isn’t completely ruled out.

The reveal that T.K is really just a DJ’s daughter named Beth makes sense because none of the clues support Gloria’s T.K is Ashley theory, but we’re sucked into the delusion and expect Ashley under the mask, at least I did.

This makes the Beth reveal disappointing but more realistic and hilarious considering that Wickie’s prediction is right.

The cameo by Ruffin is great. It’s just the disappointment of not seeing Ashley under the mask that makes it a less than thrilling moment.

Maybe I am becoming as delusional as Gloria, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the maybe Ashley is alive story makes a reappearance by the end of this season or the next season — if renewed, of course.

“Leave a Message If You Love Me” also gives Girls5Eva some new pairings. It’s become the norm to see Wickie and Dawn, and Gloria and Summer intertwined, but this episode changes up the pairs.

This change also makes the normally eccentric characters seem less strange. For example, Wickie comes off a lot more reasonable than Gloria during the episode. This is Wickie we are discussing, the queen of over-the-top behavior. She has to keep Gloria from being irrational.

It’s a welcomed change that adds layers to Wickie’s personality.

Dawn still seems the most level-headed on this episode, but Summer also comes off as more insightful than she does on previous episodes. In fact, instead of seeming like a ditzy character, it’s clear that Summer isn’t dumb but makes these choices to continue to hold on to her youth.

“Leave a Message If You Love Me” features a lot more singing from Summer and Gloria. This episode allows them all to sing, instead of just Wickie and Dawn, who are the ones most often belting out a song.

They all sound great.

Tate and Larry make their return. Both make things much more difficult for Girls5Eva as they race against the clock to complete their album. Larry reminds us just how awful he is, and Tate reminds us that the Property Brothers will make an appearance soon.

Other Thoughts

  • The “Who is the Bad Art Friend?” reference showcases how the show can perfectly incorporate ‘90s and current pop culture references.
  • This episode’s Carson Daly reference makes me hope he’s getting a producer credit at this point.
