Quiz: How Much Do You Know About ‘The Sopranos’?
HBO’s crime family drama that began the advent of Prestige TV hit the airwaves, The Sopranos, may have ended in glorious ambiguity — that cut-to-black heard ’round the world — but the enduring love from fans and the attention from new viewers is clear.
The well-received prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, and a recent Chevrolet Super Bowl commercial featuring Meadow Soprano (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) and AJ Soprano (Robert Iler) are proof of the show’s longevity and its hold on pop culture.
David Chase brought us the modern mob underworld through an Italian-American family living in the suburbs of New Jersey. The groundbreaking series made a household name of James Gandolfini with the career-defining role of Tony Soprano.
Along with Gandolfini, the series boasts superb performances from Edie Falco as Carmela Soprano, Lorraine Bracco as Dr. Jennifer Melfi, Michael Imperioli as Christopher Moltisanti, Drea de Matteo as Adriana La Cerva, and so many more. The Sopranos kept the Italian acting community working through most of the 2000s.
Premiering in 1999 and going through to 2007, HBO’s drama darling kept viewers captivated with stories of family loyalty, hit jobs, violence, and FBI raids all with a therapeutic slant.
The Soprano patriarch and head of the DiMeo crime family, suffering from panic attacks, starts the saga off by going to therapy. This unlikely combination of mental health and “mob” mentality offered a fresh approach to the ubiquitous mafia content that gained mass popularity with Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather.
The Sopranos predates the Robert De Niro/Billy Crystal vehicle, Analyze This, by mere months, giving audiences its first glimpses into what it’s like when a mob boss seeks psychiatric help, a novel concept in the late 90s.
How close are your ties with the crime family? Were you able to keep track of the ever-changing alliances and loyalties? Do you have passionate thoughts on that series finale episode and do you think about it every time you hear Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'”?
