Los Espookys Season 2 Episode 1 Review: Los Espiritus en el Cementerio (The Spirits in the Cemetery)

Los Espookys, Reviews

The Espookys crew are back and haven’t missed a beat as they deal with the fallout of last season’s finale decisions, picking up where things left off on Los Espookys season 2 episode 1, “Los Espiritus en el Cementerio (The Spirits in the Cemetery).”

The writing remains sharp and witty as the crew is seemingly getting work regularly, with their latest gig finding a way to keep the anger of families of loved ones buried in a cemetery by the groundskeeper at bay for mixing the plots of their dearly departed.

Very few shows can make something that can come across as patently offensive so absurdly funny, and Los Espookys makes it work throughout the episode.

From over-the-top groundskeeper Oliver Twix, that’s hooked on television and can’t be bothered to do their job, to the “ghostly” appearances of the crew as they hilariously portray the spirits of those passed on and convince the families that it’s their family members final wish, there’s never a dull moment.

Elsewhere, we have Tati living the “married life” with Juan Carlos in an oddly amiable manner, even if it’s strange.

Tati still doesn’t see that she was part of a trick played on him to get Andres out of the marriage. There are moments when you can’t help but feel for Tati, giving her more personality beyond the archetypical comedic relief role, and it’s a joy to see.

The show balances its off-beat vibe as she’s making “gazpacho” by pouring bottles and ketchup into a giant bowl while having that seemingly serious conversation with Ursula.

It seems almost amicable, and though a little not-so-subtle patronizing and condescension in his tone, there are quick moments where he seems to be okay with her being in his space. Is this a friendship that will be growing this season? Or is it more heartbreak in the cards for Tati? Will Andres find his way back into the middle of that?

Speaking of Andres, life at Renaldo’s family’s house, living among the “regular” people, is proving to be a little trying and is filled with hilarious moments, from his alliance with Frutsi to his trek to the supermarket with the family and not understanding how that works.

Julian Torres does a phenomenal job playing the theatricality and drama as we see Andres assimilate to everyday life for the not-ridiculously wealthy people. I look forward to seeing more of that throughout the season.

Not to mention the fabulous moment with the “Moon,” aka Oscar Nominated Yalitza Aparicio, while looking for his earring. Could his mention of it have a special meaning connected to Juan Carlos or his parents?

Meanwhile, Self-driving cars have Tico reconsidering his life choices and, in a comedic escalation of events, has his wife left after he gets fired from the valet stand and uprooting him and his “terror of an abusive 32-year-old daughter” to Mexico.

I’m sure things will go just fine in Mexico for those two. Yep.

Between Tati’s “marriage,” Andres’ Simple Life-esque arc, Renaldo’s haunting visions of the late Miss Belleza Latina, and Ursula’s possible new job as a scientific subject for those Gregoria Santos people, this season is looking to be another fun, hilarious one!

Random Thoughts

  • Tati opening the episode as Shakira and reading off that scroll is just a hilarious and fitting re-introduction to the show.
  • Andres & Tati’s lack of effort during their gig at the cemetery is hilarious. The deadpan and seriousness with which they speak further add to the comedy.
  • Ursula doesn’t question that “Free Radical Queer Vegan Book Swap” for a minute shows us that there is quite literally one brain cell shared among the Espookys crew, and it’s just incredible.
  • Pony’s Baby Shower. A+. No notes.
