Mayfair Witches Season 1 Episode 6

Mayfair Witches Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Transference

Mayfair Witches, Reviews

Rowan and the rest of the fellow Mayfair witches conduct a dangerous ritual on Mayfair Witches Season 1 Episode 6, “Transference.”

Unlike previous episodes, “Transference” delivers the action and background knowledge we’ve sought all season long.

Rowan’s drive to rid herself of Lasher proves successful when she visits Cortland and can relate to him on a personal level. Until now, Cortland has been working silently to ensure Lasher has full access to Rowan. Shying away from truly helping her anytime she’s mentioned it previously.

However, when she compares his ALS diagnosis to her unfortunate connection with Lasher, he finally understands her level of spite. Thanks to this level-headed, personable conversation, Cortland begins acting like a caring individual and works to help Rowan get what she desires.

The pinnacle of the episode is the telling of Lasher’s origin story. Piece by piece, week by week, Mayfair Witches has delivered slivers of the whole story in three-minute increments. But after waiting for nearly the entire season, we’re finally provided with the particulars of Lasher’s creation.

This deep dive into the origin story makes “Transference” one of the season’s best episodes so far. The series has spent a remarkable amount of time building a concrete foundation to rely on with their world-building.

Accurately telling a story and giving the audience the proper history and background of the series, but it’s been painfully dull often. Even with the somewhat advanced pace the series tries to achieve, it feels more monotonous.

I will die on the hill that Mayfair Witches should have dedicated an entire episode solely to Lasher’s origin story. Instead of teasing the viewers each episode with three or four minutes of content, it could have been interwoven differently, allowing them to spend more time on Suzanne and Florie.

Suzanne and Florie’s brief moments at the beginning of each episode have kept me pleased and coming back for more each week.

The connection between Rowan and Lasher is an intriguing storyline and is obviously the center of the series. Nonetheless, it’s gotten repetitive and a bit boring with Rowan consistently avoiding Lasher.

In a season with only eight episodes, having two or three filler episodes can ruin the momentum, and that’s an issue Mayfair Witches has been dealing with. Tessa becoming the new designee and one bound to Lasher is entertaining and attention-getting.

With Tessa now in possession of the key necklace, she believes she’s one of the most powerful witches in the family, despite only having the power of glamour. She quickly figures out that just because the ritual was successful, it does not mean Lasher’s undying love and admiration transfer over as well.

He is still very much enthralled with Rowan and in love with Deirdre. If we’ve learned anything by this point, Lasher will do as he pleases, when he pleases.

It’s no surprise the present-day manufactured witch-hunting group is brought back into the playing field. They’ve been teased since the beginning of the series, and Tessa’s obsession with them has made her vulnerable.

Instead of thinking about the group as sophisticated, knowledgeable, and determined, she believes they can be easily manipulated and taken out.

It’s that exact reason why she decides to trick the coroner parading Deirdre’s heart online into meeting her at night. But what she’s unaware of is how he’s been stalking her for quite some time, so her alias does no good at hiding who she is.

The coroner comes prepared, and in Tessa’s final moments, she calls out for Lasher, only to be ignored. This drastic change to the narrative is exciting and is bound to make the last two episodes of the season exhilarating.

We can only hope that the pace of the penultimate episode and season finale increases exceedingly. They would also do well to include more action and end the season with a bang.

It feels like we’ve yet to see much of it utilized for a series revolving around witches.

Stray Thoughts:

  • With the key necklace back in possession of the Mayfairs, it’ll be exceedingly difficult to figure a way out of the memory world Ciprien is stuck in.
  • Lasher is clearly hurt by Rowan’s decision to transfer him to someone else. The question now is how he’ll use his abilities to get his revenge or return to her.
