Yellowstone Possibly To End with Season 5
On the heels of the news that 1923 has been renewed for a second season, there are reports that a major shake-up with the original Yellowstone series is on the horizon.
According to Deadline, Kevin Costner’s version of the Dutton family saga may be coming to an end with Taylor Sheridan looking to sign on Matthew McConaughey to lead an extension of the Paramount Network franchise.
“The crux of the issue with the original Yellowstone series involves star Kevin Costner and disagreements over shooting schedules,” per Deadline. The veteran actor has other projects in the works – upcoming Horizon, to name one.
Costner asked Paramount Network to allow him only a week of filming for the second half of Season 5, but it’s reported that they denied him this request.
With Costner being the patriarch, John Dutton, this puts Yellowstone in a bit of a bind moving forward.
For all the talk, it looks like the show will finish its current Season 5 before taking a bow. The first part of Season 5 concluded in December; the second is due to be released sometime this summer.
TV Line also reports that when Paramount Network denied Costner, they chose instead to move on to creating another Dutton universe extension. Like the other shows, this extension will be exclusive to Paramount+.
Now that Sheridan has expanded the Dutton universe with 1883 and 1923, another Yellowstone extension wouldn’t be completely remiss.
There is no word yet on whether or not cast members of the signature show will be moving over to this new venture, which Sheridan will write with McConaughey as the star, but Deadline reports, “it is expected to include several of the big stars.”
As of reporting, McConaughey is still in negotiations, and any plot and setting details are still under wraps.
“We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come,” a Paramount Network representative said in a statement.
“Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner,” the statement concluded.
