Twilight Eclipse - Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black, Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan, and Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen

‘Twilight’ TV Series in the Works from Lionsgate Television

News

The vampire renaissance lives on as The Twilight Saga prepares to sink its teeth into the small screen.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s exclusive report states that Lionsgate Television’s adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s book series does not have a network/platform, writer, or a timeline for when the project “will be taken out to potential buyers as Lionsgate first plans to find a writer to steer it.”

Per THR, “sources say the studio, which controls the rights to the franchise, plans to lead the development on the project before shopping the rights to the package.” The initial report also notes that Lionsgate Television declined to comment.

While plenty of details remain unknown about this adaptation, Deadline confirms that Meyer is expected to be involved in the Twilight TV series.

Stephanie Meyer debuted The Twilight Saga with Twilight in 2005, followed by New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn.

Lionsgate’s film adaptations, starring Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan, Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, and Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black, began with Twilight in 2008. Breaking Dawn: Part 2, the franchise’s final film, hit theaters in 2012.

This timeline means that Lionsgate Television’s latest adaptation comes only a little more than ten years after the story concluded on the big screen.

Additional books by Meyer fill out the universe, including Twilight: The Graphic Novels, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella, The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide, and Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined

Most recently, Meyer wrote Midnight Sun, a companion book to Twilight that retells the book’s events through Edward’s perspective. It hit bookshelves in 2020.

Ashley Greene, who starred in the films as Alice Cullen, launched a Twilight Saga rewatch podcast in 2022 called The Twilight Effect, per Entertainment Weekly.

Twilight‘s resurgence has much to do with the streaming age, as Deadline notes the five-film franchise recently moved from Netflix and now streams on Peacock.

This news from Lionsgate Television comes around the same time MAX announced a 10-year commitment to “a faithful adaptation” of Harry Potter for television, with author J.K. Rowling producing the series.

Per MAX, “The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much loved characters, and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over twenty-five years.”

The Harry Potter film franchise’s final outing, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, hit theaters in 2011, only one year shy of when The Twilight Saga closed the book with Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years.”

The Twilight Saga is streaming on Peacock.
