Writers Strike Officially Ends: WGA Reveals Details of New Deal

News

TV writers can return to work, as the writers strike officially ended at 12:01 am PT/3:01 am ET today, September 27th.

The WGA and AMPTP made a tentative deal this weekend. Yesterday, September 26th, the Negotiating Committee, the WGAW Board, and WGAE Council all voted unanimously to recommend the agreement.

It will now go to both guilds’ memberships for a ratification vote.

In the meantime, The WGAW Board and WGAE Council also voted to lift the restraining order and end the strike as of this morning. This means writers are able to return to work during the ratification process.

Writers will now have the ability to perform tasks such as “pitching, selling scripts, taking meetings, responding to notes,” as noted by The Hollywood Reporter.

In a previous statement from the WGA Negotiating Committee, they note that the agreement is one they are extremely happy with. “We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional—with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership,” the statement reads.

The WGA has also now revealed the details of the new agreement. That agreement includes increased health and pension contributions for writing teams and increased compensation for series employment. It includes a viewership-based streaming bonus as well, along with more transparency when it comes to streaming data.

Additionally, the deal includes strong guidelines regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI). For instance, AI “can’t write or rewrite literary material.” This ultimately means that “AI-generated material can’t be used to undermine a writer’s credit.”

Writers room staffing was also a key point of negations. Development rooms and regular writers rooms will now have minimum staffing requirements, according to the new agreement. Assuming the deal is ratified in October, those guideliens will go into effect for seasons where the first episode is written after December 1, 2023.

There are several other items in the new agreement. You can read a summary of the full agreement here.
