House of the Dragon Season 2 to Air in 2024 on HBO
The Game of Thrones spinoff series, House of the Dragon, has set a premiere window for its sophomore season on HBO.
HBO’s CEO and chairman Casey Bloys announced the news during a press event in New York on Thursday, revealing the show’s return in the “early summer” of 2024, per The Hollywood Reporter.
House of the Dragon Season 2 will consist of eight episodes, two less than its debut season, according to TV Line.
HBO renewed the spinoff series set 200 years before Game of Thrones for a second season only days after its debut, House of the Dragon Season 1 Episode 1, “The Heirs of the Dragon,” on Sunday, August 21, 2023.
The show based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood began production on Season 2, which has now wrapped and is in postproduction, in April 2023.
“House of the Dragon has returned. We are thrilled to be shooting again with members of our original family as well as new talents on both sides of the camera,” Ryan Condal, Co-Creator/Showrunner/Executive Producer, said.
“All your favorite characters will soon be conspiring at the council tables, marching with their armies, and riding their dragons into battle. We can’t wait to share what we have in store,” Condal added.
Variety reported in July 2023 that House of the Dragon could continue work during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike because the “cast is composed of primarily U.K. actors who are working under contracts governed by the local union, Equity.”
“As such, the series is technically allowed to continue filming because Equity members aren’t legally allowed to strike in solidarity with the U.S. union,” the report continued.
House of the Dragon Season 2 stars Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans. Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, and Matthew Needham also return.
George R.R. Martin co-created the series and serves as an executive producer alongside Condal. Sara Hess, Alan Taylor, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Loni Peristere, and Vince Gerardis executive produce House of the Dragon.
