Upload Season 3 Episodes 7 and 8 Review: Upload Day / Flesh and Blood

Reviews, Upload

Upload Season 3 Episode 7, “Upload Day,” and Upload Season 3 Episode 8, “Flesh and Blood,” sadly continue to feature the issues that have been plaguing this entire season.

We’ve covered them ad nauseum in my other reviews, so I won’t discuss them much here, but the pacing issues exist in these final two episodes as well. Honestly, it would have been highly unlikely that the show would’ve gotten its act together for the final two episodes, but it would have been a nice surprise.

Let’s dive into the twists in these final two episodes and their implications for a potential Season 4.

The finale does a good job with the twists that Nathan has been consolidated (for lack of a better word) down to one person and Horizen is rebranding. The rebranding ad playing while both Nathans are being captured is extremely well done.

These twists work because they offer some resolution on plot points that we’ve spent all season focusing on: Nora and Nathan’s quest to bring down Horizen and the existence of backup Nathan — we knew having two Nathans was never going to last.

Those chapters have closed, and now the show is building toward something new.

Alternatively, Aleesha’s storyline is a straight cliffhanger.

It’s the consequences of her actions, but we don’t even get a glimpse of what it will be. I doubt something as serious as firing will happen, but it would have been nice to get a bit more other than her last call with Luke.

As far as we know, Karina doesn’t have any reason to suspect Aleesha was behind the leak, but perhaps security footage revealed her sneaking into Karina’s office. What do you think Aleesha’s fate will be?

There is one reveal that Upload completely botches — there was never a risk of a download’s head exploding.

This tidbit is dropped during a tense moment where we know something isn’t quite right with the doctor’s arrival at the law firm, and so our focus is there and not fully on the conversation up in the conference room.

Honestly, this reveal didn’t fully register to me until Nathan shared it with backup Nathan. While the reveal could’ve still happened via an offhand comment, it would have been best if we were allowed to sit with it a beat, allowing us, as well as Nora and Nathan, time to process the implications.

The bulk of this season, and part of last season, features Nora and Nathan being concerned about the limited number of time he has left as a download, so there should have been more of a focus on the reveal.

Despite the multitude of issues this season, Upload still manages to get us excited for the next season. There’s a high liklihood Season 4 will disappoint us, but it will also bring some wonderful character moments in the process. Now, we just have to wait and see if it gets renewed.

Stray Thoughts
  • Ingrid inviting AI elevator guy to the wedding is the sweetest thing and a great callback to their scene together last season.
  • Are we going to ignore that Nathan thought you could just release a goat in the park? He’s so smart and yet so dumb.
  • Did backup Nathan also include Luke in his proposal/wedding plans?
  • I love Nora and Ingrid’s relationship in the finale.
  • So is Choak still just hanging out on that drive?
  • This show reminds me of Teen Wolf. Is the story itself great? Not usually, but the characters are amazing.
