Slow Horses Season 3 Episode 4 Review: Uninvited Guest
On Slow Horses Season 3 Episode 4, “Uninvited Guest,” solves one mystery surrounding Alison’s death, and it changes the course of this season’s case once again.
Suddenly, I’m more interested in the details surrounding her death.
The show continues to raise the stakes of this case without any of it seeming far-fetched. It’s not a twist for twist’s sake; the groundwork has been there all along. We are only now allowed to see some pieces fit together.
If Tearney is ordering Duffy to “clear the board,” you know there’s something that would destroy either her career or the reputation of the agency if it is made public. There are at least three MI5 agents in there — granted, she doesn’t much like slough house — but that’s still a heavy order to give.
It’ll be interesting to see if whatever secret Tearney wants to keep hidden away is actually worth ordering the execution of MI5 agents and civilians.
Slow Horses Season 3 Episode 5, “Cleaning Up,” is sure to be an intense episode as Louisa and River will have to fight their way out of that facility; they are extremely outnumbered.
One of my complaints about Slow Horses Season 1 was that we followed around the bad guys when there was no reason to; they didn’t add anything to the story. So spending more time with the tiger team has been a little worrying.
However, Slow Horses appears to have learned from its past mistakes and has realized that the “bad guys” aren’t what we are most interested in — it’s our slow horses.
Aside from a couple of brief scenes, we are rarely just following around the tiger team. We see them with Catherine, Spider, or Louisa and River. There’s always someone we care about (or Spider) with them.
The scenes at the house, in particular, could skew a bit on the boring side if Catherine wasn’t there. Sure, a couple of times we are treated to brief scenes of the trio without Catherine, but for the most part, anytime we are at that house, we’re checking on Catherine.
River: What makes you think it will go wrong?
Louisa: Your track record.
Louisa and River being paired up so much this season is a dream come true.
They’re such a fun duo with different investigative styles and personalities, which is why they are so entertaining. There’s the banter, which is expected but fantastic, and then Slow Horses decides to tug on our heartstrings by bringing up Min.
There are so many reasons why Louisa and River talking about Min is wonderful. For one, it’s realistic to see coworkers talking about someone close to them who passed away. Sometimes TV shows tend to have something happen and then never mention it again, which is frustrating.
Of course, this conversation is initially botched by River (as expected), but it ends up being a sweet moment between the two. They’re allowed a moment to be vulnerable. River and Louisa aren’t the type to share what’s going on with them at the office, but it’s clear they both need someone to talk to.
Stray Thoughts
- Marcus and Shirley will somehow get re-hired… right?
- I’m proud of River for updating Lamb and getting his approval before jetting off to do a job for Tearney. He’s learning.
- Ultimately, he should’ve done what Lamb did and rejected the offer.
- Roddy and Lamb going on a field trip is bound to be entertaining.
