The Brothers Sun (Netflix) – January 4
After the death of his father, Charles must go to LA to protect his mother and younger brother who have no idea that Charles and his father are members of a powerful triad in Taiwan. The Brothers Sun premieres on January 4 on Netflix.
Series Description: When the head of a powerful Taiwanese triad is shot by a mysterious assassin, his eldest son, legendary killer Charles “Chairleg” Sun (Justin Chien) heads to Los Angeles to protect his mother, Eileen (Michelle Yeoh), and his naive younger brother, Bruce (Sam Song Li) — who’s been completely sheltered from the truth of his family until now.
But as Taipei’s deadliest societies and a new rising faction go head-to-head for dominance — Charles, Bruce and their mother must heal the wounds caused by their separation and figure out what brotherhood and family truly mean before one of their countless enemies kills them all. An action-packed comedy and family drama, The Brothers Sun is created by Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu.
Echo (Disney+) – January 9
Echo returns, this time as the lead in her own series, and she’ll face off against Wilson Fisk once again. Echo premieres with all episodes on January 9 at 6 p.m. PST on Disney+ and Hulu (until April 9).
Series Description:Marvel Studios presents Echo, spotlighting Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) as she is pursued by Wilson Fisk’s (Vincent D��Onofrio) criminal empire. When the journey brings her home, she must confront her own family and legacy.
Criminal Record (Apple TV+) – January 10
An anonymous call re-opens an old murder case, much to the chagrin of the detective who closed it years ago. Criminal Record premieres with two episodes on January 10 on Apple TV+ with new episodes releasing weekly.
Series Description: From BAFTA Award nominee Paul Rutman, Criminal Record, is a powerful new London crime thriller starring Academy Award winner Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo. An anonymous phone call draws two brilliant detectives into a confrontation over an old murder case — one a young woman in the early stages of her career, the other a well-connected man determined to protect his legacy. The series touches on issues of race, institutional failure and the quest to find common ground in a polarized Britain.
Ted (Peacock) – January 11
Seth MacFarlane’s foul-mouthed teddy bear is back in an all-new prequel series. Ted premieres with all episodes on January 11 on Peacock.
Series Description: In this comedic prequel event series to the Ted films, it’s 1993, and Ted the bear’s (Seth MacFarlane) moment of fame has passed. He’s now living back home in Framingham, Massachusetts with his best friend, 16-year-old John Bennett (Max Burkholder), along with John’s parents, Matty and Susan (Scott Grimes and Alanna Ubach) and cousin Blaire (Giorgia Whigham). Ted may be a lousy influence on John, but at the end of the day, he’s a loyal pal who’s always willing to go out on a limb for friendship.
Self Reliance (Hulu) – January 12
The chance to win a million dollars has a man agreeing to participate in a dark web reality TV show where assassins from all over will try to kill him for thirty days. All he has to do is survive. Self Reliance premieres on January 12 on Hulu.
Film Description: When a middle-aged man (Jake Johnson) is invited into a limo by famous actor Andy Samberg, his dull life takes a thrilling turn. Johnson is offered a chance to win a million dollars in a dark web reality TV show, where assassins from all over the world attempt to kill him for 30 days. The catch? He can’t be killed if he’s not entirely alone, leading him to recruit an unlikely team to help him survive.
Lift (Netflix) – January 12
Netflix’s latest heist movie boasts an all-star cast led by Kevin Hart. Join this crew as they race to steal 500 million dollars from a plane that’s cruising at 40,000 feet. Lift premieres on January 12 on Netflix.
Film Description: An international heist crew, led by Cyrus Whitaker (Kevin Hart), races to lift $500 million in gold from a passenger plane at 40,000 feet.
Death and Other Details (Hulu) – January 16
Imogene becomes the prime suspect in a murder, and she’ll have to team up with someone she hates to clear her name. Death and Other Details premieres with two episodes on January 16 on Hulu with new episodes releasing weekly.
Series Description: Set amidst the glamor of the global elite, Death and Other Details centers on the brilliant and restless Imogene Scott (Violett Beane), who finds herself in the wrong place/wrong time (okay, it was kinda her fault) and becomes the prime suspect in a locked room murder mystery. The setting? A lavishly restored Mediterranean ocean liner. Suspects? Every pampered guest and every exhausted crew member. The problem? To prove her innocence, she must partner with a man she despises — Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin), the world’s greatest detective.
Hazbin Hotel (Prime Video) – January 19
The princess of Hell opens a hotel with the purpose of rehabilitating demons so they can enter heaven. Hazbin Hotel premieres with four episodes on January 19 on Prime Video with two episodes releasing every week through February 2.
Series Description: Hazbin Hotel follows Charlie, the princess of Hell, as she pursues her seemingly impossible goal of rehabilitating demons to peacefully reduce overpopulation in her kingdom. After a yearly extermination imposed by angels, she opens a hotel in the hopes that patrons will be “checking out” into Heaven. While most of Hell mocks her goal, her devoted partner Vaggie, and their first test subject, adult film-star Angel Dust, stick by her side. When a powerful entity known as the “Radio Demon” reaches out to assist Charlie in her endeavors, her crazy dream is given a chance to become reality.
The Bequeathed (Netflix) – January 19
Yoon Seo Ha inherits a gravesite after the death of her uncle and, soon after, becomes involved in a murder investigation. The Bequeathed premieres on January 19 on Netflix.
Series Description: After the death of an unknown uncle, a woman inherits a burial ground and finds herself in the center of a string of murders and dark secrets.
Sexy Beast (Paramount+) – January 25
A prequel to a film of the same name, this series focuses on the start of Gal and Don’s friendship. Sexy Beast premieres on January 25 on Paramount+.
Series Description: The prequel series explores the origins of Gal and Don’s complicated relationship as they find themselves descending into the seductive madness of the London criminal world during the vibrant and volatile 1990s, while Gal’s budding relationship with Deedee threatens everything in their world.
Masters of the Air (Apple TV+) – January 26
Set in WWII, this limited series explores the psychological price paid by the men of the 100th Bomb Group who are responsible for executing bombing raids over Nazi Germany. Masters of the Air premieres with two episodes on January 26 on Apple TV+ with new episodes airing weekly.
Limited Series Description: Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, Masters of the Air follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. Expats (Prime Video) – January 26
Three women’s lives are entangled after a terrible accident. Expats premieres with two episodes on January 26 on Prime Video with new episodes releasing weekly.
