Found Season 1 Episode 12 Review: Missing While Eccentric

Found, Reviews

Gabi’s secret is revealed to one member of her team on Found Season 1 Episode 12, “Missing While Eccentric.”

Her motivation for calling Dhan and letting him see that she’s been holding Sir captive in her basement feels complicated. On some level, she wants Dhan to kill him — taking care of it for her in a way she can’t seem to do herself. On the other hand, having someone else in on the secret means sharing the burden with someone.

I do have to say, I’m surprised by the fact that Dhan didn’t already know about Sir. It felt like if anyone would have helped her with this secret, it would have been him.

And to some degree, that’s true. We learn from their conversation that Dhan helped her find Sir. Sir even recognizes Dhan as being there the night Gabi took him. But Dhan didn’t know what happened after that, and in fact, assumed Gbai had killed her kidnapper.

To him, that would have been more palatable than what she’s doing now. Seeing this through Dhan’s eyes makes what Gabi is doing feel even more terrible, not only because she’s doing to someone what was done to her, but because she’s giving Sir a chance for redemption.

Dhan won’t kill him now. His character has evolved in a way we haven’t even totally seen yet, but we’re told that the person he was nine months ago could have killed Sir in an instant. The work he’s been doing as a member of Gabi’s team is what’s helped him change.

Dhan’s feelings on Gabi keeping Sir in her basement and using him to help with cases, change when Gabi herself gets taken while trying to solve the case of the week.

This particular case starts out being just a little too convenient. Zeke spots a woman in distress looking for help in his neighborhood and provides her a safe place to hide out.

While that feels a little less than realistic in many ways, it does provide a nice change of pace from the standard structure of clients going straight to Gabi’s office to look for a missing loved one.

What stands out about this case is the way Gabi responds to it. Even when the woman Zeke helped is speaking what seems to be gibberish and insisting it was a lizard who kidnapped her, Gabi believes her.

While most everyone, including the doctors and nurses at the hospital, figures she’s been on drugs, Gabi still trusts that she’s telling the truth — at least in some way.

It’s the central part of her goal, really. She’s not going to write anyone off or make assumptions. And once again, it’s the right decision.

Unfortunately, things take a turn when Gabi becomes one of the many kidnapping victims.

This is where Dhan changes his tune about Sir. Left with no other options, Dhan realizes going to Sir is the best chance Gabi has of being saved. Sir’s expertise proves pivotal, as usual, but he’s desperate himself.

The panic he shows when he learns Gabi is in danger is visceral, genuine, and heartbreaking. His feelings about her have never been more clear than they are in that moment.

Gabi is saved just in time, and while this case doesn’t get a perfectly happy ending, it does result in a few victories. At the end of it, Gabi resolves that she can’t keep doing what she’s been doing. She tells Dhan she’s going to turn Sir in, even though she knows what that will mean for herself, too.

I can’t imagine it’s going to be that simple, though.

Other thoughts:

  • Sir shows genuine fear and sadness when Gabi threatens him on this episode, even startling when her phone rings. She also cuts him to the bone with the comments about his mother — allowing us to see that glimmer of vulnerability in him again.
  • In the flashback, Sir convinces Gabi to go with him to see first editions of “all of their favorite books.” This line strikes me as too generic and almost unbelievable. Offering her the chance to see or borrow specific titles would have felt more real.
  • It’s a small moment, but seeing Zeke try to leave his home to help find Gabi, and then being unable, is positively heartbreaking. However, at the same time, it does suggest some progress.

  • As crazy as this may sound. Was anyone else as happy as I was to see that Sir had escaped the basement?
