Hacks Season 2 Episode 8 - Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder

Hacks Returns with Season 3 This Spring on Max

News

A year and a half since Max announced renewed the series, its award-winning comedy darling, Hacks, is slated to be back on our screens this spring.

As previously reported, just two weeks following its Season 2 finale, Max (then still operating as HBO Max) gave news that it renewed Hacks for Season 3.

“We congratulate Hacks‘ extraordinarily gifted executive producers and cast, and our partners at Universal Television. We are overjoyed at the audience and press response to the new season, and glad to give viewers more of this gorgeous, hilarious, moving show,” Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max, said.

Hannah Einbinder and Jean Smart put their best feet forward in a joint social media post on Instagram featuring Deborah Vance (Smart) and Ava (Einbinder) standing side by side from the knees down — Deborah all glammed up and sparkly in heels and Ava, a true bisexual, in jeans and Doc Martins.

“Steppin’ on out,” reads the caption to tease us fans of the long-awaited premiere of Hacks Season 3.

TV Line reports, “Production on Season 3 began in December 2022 but then paused in February 2023, as series lead Jean Smart underwent and recovered from an undisclosed heart procedure.”

Then, Hacks Season 3 shut down production in mid-March and over the summer when the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA went on strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) for fair contracts.

Einbinder, who plays a Hollywood writer on Hacks, was on the picket lines herself and vocal about the issues writers and actors face in the industry. “I understand, viewers and fans’ alike inclination to question and be like, ‘aren’t you guys like these spoiled rich people?'” Einbinder said in an interview with IndieWire.

“And in some cases, yes, there are wealthy actors, for sure. There are wealthy writers and show runners for sure. But the overwhelming majority of folks who work in this industry, they just can’t get by,” Einbinder added. After reaching new deals, the WGA’s strike ended in September, and SAG-AFTRA’s ended in November.

Created and showrun by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky,  Hacks is executive produced by Downs and Aniello via their Paulilu banner, Statsky via First Thought Productions, as well as Michael Schur via Fremulon, David Miner for 3 Arts Entertainment, and Morgan Sackett.

Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, produces the show.

Hacks Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Max.
