Welcome to a new week, a new year, and another round of What to Watch on TV! Our picks for the week of January 14th include some fun special events, exciting finales, and long-awaited premieres.

This week, we feature the 75th Primetime Emmy® Awards, One Chicago, Law & Order, and more!

Here are our recommendations for what to watch on TV this week:

Critics’ Choice Awards – Sunday, January 14th

An event where the critics are the ones who hold all the cards in determining the best in film and TV for 2023. Honorees this year include Barbie, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Succession, The Morning Show, Abbott Elementary, The Bear, and more. Critics’ Choice Awards air Sunday, January 14th at 7/6c on The CW.

Special Event Description: The 29th Critics’ Choice Awards will be presented on January 14, 2024, at the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport in Santa Monica, California, honoring the finest achievements of filmmaking and television programming in 2023.

True Detective: Night Country – Sunday, January 14th

For Season 4 of the HBO hit drama, the story travels to Alaska. With Jodie Foster taking the reigns, the story follows two women detectives trying to uncover the truth about the disappearance of a series of men. True Detective: Night Country premieres Sunday, January 14th at 9/8c on HBO and Max.

Episode Description: Liz and Evangeline face demons from the past as they try to uncover more information about the fate of eight lost men in Alaska.

The Curse – Sunday, January 14th

The season finale of this complicated, messy series takes a look at where Whitney and Asher are a few months into the future. The Curse airs Sunday, January 14th at 9/8c on Showtime.

A young woman finds herself the main suspect in a murder case when she ends up at the wrong place at the wrong time. In order to clear her name, she must partner with a man she hates because he’s the world’s greatest detective. Death and Other Details premieres Tuesday, January 16th on Hulu.

Chicago Med – Wednesday, January 17th

The E.D. finds itself flooded with patients after a crash, and the entire team ends up helping. Charles can’t shake the feeling that he knows the new attending, and Archer has second thoughts about his kidney transplant. Chicago Med premieres Wednesday, January 17th at 8/7c on NBC.

Things are not at all well at Firehouse 51 as the crew shares space with Firehouse 17. Meanwhile, Kidd and Herrmann are fighting while Kidd and Severide’s relationship is tested to the extreme by a case. Chicago Fire premieres Wednesday, January 17th at 9/8c on NBC.

Chicago P.D. – Wednesday, January 17th

Upton finds herself at odds with the crisis prevention team over how they handle policing mental health crises. Meanwhile, Voight continues to lend a hand to Upton as she struggles outside of the job. Chicago P.D. premieres Wednesday, January 17th at 10/9c on NBC.

Episode Description: Tasked with shadowing a crisis prevention team, Upton finds her approach to policing at odds with the team’s mental health clinician; Voight stands by Upton as she continues to struggle in her personal life.

Wild Cards – Wednesday, January 17th

Crossing paths with a transient con artist named Max, Ellis ends up relying on her to assist on a local crime case. The two find themselves faced with the opportunity to redeem themselves, if they can cooperate long enough to accomplish anything. Wild Cards premieres Wednesday, January 17th at 8/7c on The CW.

Series Description: Demoted detective Ellis has unfortunately spent the last year on the maritime unit while Max has been living a transient life elaborately scamming everyone she meets. However, when Max gets arrested and ends up helping Ellis solve a local crime, the two are offered the opportunity to redeem themselves, with Ellis becoming a detective again and Max staying out of jail. The catch? They must work together, with each using their unique skills to solve crimes. For Ellis, that means hard-boiled shoe leather police work; for Max, it means accents, schemes and generally befriending everyone in sight while driving Ellis absolutely nuts. The two will have to learn what it means to trust another person and maybe actually become partners.

Detective Vincent Riley joins Detective Jalen Shaw as his new partner for a case that will shake some trees. Freedom of speech comes into question in the wake of a murder on campus. Law & Order premieres Thursday, January 18th at 8/7c on NBC.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit – Thursday, January 18th

The squad comes together in celebration of the birth of Rollins and Carisi’s child. The celebration is cut short when another child is taken in broad daylight pulling the team into action. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit premieres Thursday, January 18th at 9/8c on NBC.

Episode Description: As the squad celebrates the birth of Rollins and Carisi’s child, another child goes missing in broad daylight.

Law & Order: Organized Crime – Thursday, January 18th

Stabler returns from a dangerous, long-lasting undercover assignment to find many things have changed both on the job and at home. Jet and Reyes find themselves struggling in the wake of Whelan leaving. Law & Order: Organized Crime premieres Thursday, January 18th at 10/9c on NBC.

Episode Description: Stabler must deal with rapid changes at work and home after returning from a dangerous undercover assignment; Bell hires an adviser whose AI technology programme could revolutionize police investigation; Jet and Reyes struggle with Whelan’s absence.

Hazbin Hotel – Friday, January 19th

The princess of Hell, Charlie, wants to find a new, no-violent way of handling things. So, she creates a rehabilitation hotel for a group of misfit demons. Hazbin Hotel premieres Friday, January 19th on Prime Video.

Series Description: In an attempt to find a non-violent alternative for reducing Hell’s overpopulation, the daughter of Lucifer opens a rehabilitation hotel that offers a group of misfit demons a chance at redemption.

The Woman in the Wall – Friday, January 19th

The American premiere of this BBC program follows the story of Lorna Brady, who finds an unknown dead body in her house. The subsequent investigation awakens a part of her she had long ago buried, which raises more questions. The Woman in the Wall premieres Friday, January 19th on Paramount+.

Series Description: The Woman in the Wall starring Ruth Wilson and Daryl McCormack, follows the horrors experienced by an Irish woman Lorna Brady, who wakes one morning to find a dead body in her house. Lorna has no idea who the dead woman is, or even of her own culpability, as she suffers from extreme bouts of sleepwalking from her time incarcerated in the infamous Kilkinure Convent. Detective Colman Akande, who hides his own past, starts investigating her for a crime that is unrelated to the dead woman.
